The Longview CVB isworking on modifying their current RealEast Texas Friendly Hospitality Training toinclude a bus tour of our local attractions.

RV Adventures coming to the 29th Annual Boat, RV and Camping EXPO – January 28-30

John Holod, internationally recognized cinematographer,will headline the 2011 Boat, RV and Camping EXPO set

for January 23-30 at the Maude Cobb Activity Center. Holod is an internationally recognized cinematographer

who has filmed all over the world and has presented hisdocumentaries to audiences across North America. Hestands out in the travel film industry because he travels ina state of the art Born Free Motorcoach, immersing himselfin the culture and surroundings he's depicting. The RVserves as home, office and studio while he is on the road.

Documentaries produced and presented by Holodinclude "RV'ing Alaska's Inside Passage", "Alaska: RVAdventure of a Lifetime", "East Coast RV Adventure", "GulfCoast RV Adventure", "Baja RV Adventure", "Cuba", and"Czech/Slovakia". He has lectured at such prestigiousvenues as the National Geographic Society, the CarnegieInstitute, Cal Tech and RV Shows in Hershey, Tampa,Chicago, Denver, and many others. In recognition of hisoutstanding film achievement, he received the "Rising Star"award from the travelogue industry in 1995. In 2007 he wasawarded the "Distinguished Achievement in RV Journalism

Award" by the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association.Before embarking on his life as a professional world

traveler, filmmaker and adventurer, Johnstudied cinematography, journalism andphotography at Wayne State Universityin Michigan. Now the cinematographerspends most of the year on the roadproducing travelogues and presentingthem to audiences around the country.

John began filming at the age of 11,when he made his first travelogue film,

which included footage from the back of his father'smotorcycle en route to the 1964 world's fair in New York.At the age of 20 he left Detroit on his own motorcycle to seethe country. After traveling 17,000 miles that first summerhe never looked back. He has lived in Aspen Colorado,Maui Hawaii, and Zermatt Switzerland. When not seeingthe world, he and Jodie reside in Tucson AZ.

Longview Receives National Recognition as a Main Street City

The Longview Chamber of Commerce has launchedMy Chamber App, a mobile chamber member

directory for chamber members. My Chamber App is afree application for iPhone, Droid and Blackberryphones.

For the second year in a row, the Texas HistoricalCommission (THC) and the National Trust for Historic

Preservation recognized Longview as one of the 52National Main Street Cities in Texas at the TexasDowntown Association/Texas Main Street Conference inEl Paso last week.

“It is only with the effort and support of our manyvolunteers, the Longview Main Street Program hasreceived this recognition for the second year in a row. Theseveral new businesses which opened this past year andthe work completed on Fredonia is helping to create anattractive downtown where people want to be,” said PaulAnderson, Main Street Manager and Senior Vice Presidentof the Longview Chamber. “Three buildings in downtownreceived funding assistance to renovate their façade

through Main Street Façade Improvement GrantProgram.” Two new events this year which attractedpeople to downtown Longview were Main StreetPromotion Committee’s Downtown Market andPreservation Longview’s Historic Downtown FarmersMarket in the spring and fall.

Cities chosen as National Main Street Cities must showabove average performance in 10 categories. The selectioncriteria focus on planning, staff and volunteers,preservation ethic, training and program assessment.Longview’s Main Street Program will be honored alongwith the other cities in Texas and the nation at TheNational Trust for Historic Preservation’s National MainStreet Center 2011 National Main Streets Conference to beheld in Des Moines, Iowa in May.

In the summer of 2010, Keep Longview Beautiful’s GoGreen Committee had an idea to partner with one area

school campus to do a few recycling drives. The word gotout and that onecampus quicklyturned in to seven.Now with helpfrom StragentFoundation,campuses atLongview ISD,Pine Tree ISD andSpring Hill ISD have formed one Go Green Team. Theteam of students participate in three recycling programsfor the remainder of the current school year. Students willhave the opportunity to recycle aluminum cans, paper andelectronics. They can even bring these items from home.Keep Longview Beautiful hopes the program will helpstudents develop lifelong recycling habits.

FIGP Applications Available

The hugely popular façade improvement grants thathave been available through the Longview Main Street

Office for the last two years are available now for 2011. A key element to the design-planning component of a

revitalization effort is thereturn of business activity tothe commercial district indowntown Longview. Freshpaint, new awnings, orcomplete facaderehabilitation have beensigns that something positiveis happening. These first steps can be the spark to igniteinterest and spur new commercial excitement. The FaçadeImprovement Grant Program (FIGP) provides a catalystfor these first steps.

One Hundred Acres of Heritage Main Street providesmoney through this grant process to commercial property

owners or business owners (with property ownerapproval) to encourage restoration projects of buildingfacades and to enhance the building’s overall exteriorappearance. The grants are funded by the City of

Longview CommunityDevelopment usingCommunity DevelopmentBlock Grant money. The money is from federalfunds made possible throughthe U.S. Department ofHousing and Urban

Development (HUD). The Longview Main Street’s Façade Improvement Grant

Program application packet has been revised for 2011.Interested parties should call the Main Street Office duringregular business hours and request a time to meet withMain Street staff and to receive an application packet.

Leadership Development

Leadership Longview Class Selects Class Project

The Leadership Longview Class of 2010-2011 hasselected its class project. This year’s recipient is the

ARC of Gregg County.Each year since 1998 Leadership Longview classes have

selected community service projects which directly benefitthe community. Projects have included creatingplaygrounds for social service agencies, renovating sheltersand housing facilities, creating a local neighborhoodlibrary and other projects which have a major impact onthe community.

This year’s project benefiting the ARC of Gregg Countywill include revamping the area into something that ismuch more pleasing and productive to the ARC members.This project will include:

• Replacing the existing greenhouse with a newgreenhouse;

• Establishing a gardening area for vegetables;• Providing a new sitting area for members;• Removal of brush/trees/weeds and planting more

aesthetic/weather resistant plants.Work will begin in January with final completion of the

project in mid-April.

Lisa Null has recently joined the Longview Chamber ofCommerce staff as Membership Services Clerk. Lisa

was born in Liberty City and is a graduateof Sabine High School. After attendingKilgore College, Lisa began work in theSafety/Human Resource Department atTransit Mix Concrete.

Her most recent work experienceincludes working as an administrative

assistant at Wells Fargo Advisors. In herspare time, Lisa enjoys hunting (deer, elk

and hogs) and riding four-wheelers. She is a member of theLongview Museum of Fine Arts.
