DEAR FRIENDS & NEIGHBOURS, In December I was honoured to award Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medals to outstanding leaders in Vancouver Quadra. I wish to thank the independent selection committee of community leaders who accepted the difficult task of selecting thirty medal recipients on my behalf, from five times as many incredibly qualified nominees. Elinor Ostrom, the only woman to ever win the Nobel Prize in Economics—for her work on managing the commons— observed that contrary to traditional competition-based economic theories, our communities are built on the sustainable principles of trust, sharing and cooperation, and that local community-based solutions to society’s problems work best. MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT FOR VANCOUVER QUADRAJOycE MuRRAy

January 2013 Happy New Year!DEAR FRIENDs & NEIghBOuRs,

In December I was honoured to award Queen Elizabeth

II Diamond Jubilee medals to outstanding leaders in

Vancouver Quadra. I wish to thank the independent selection

committee of community leaders who accepted the difficult

task of selecting thirty medal recipients on my behalf, from

five times as many incredibly qualified nominees.

Elinor Ostrom, the only woman to ever win the Nobel Prize

in Economics—for her work on managing the commons—

observed that contrary to traditional competition-based

economic theories, our communities are built on the

sustainable principles of trust, sharing and cooperation,

and that local community-based solutions to society’s

problems work best. The thirty medalists were diverse in

their ethnicity, age, gender, and accomplishments, however

they are all leaders in providing community solutions, a vital

path for individual human well-being and Canadian society

as a whole.

Congratulations to all medal recipients and nominees, and

thank you to their nominators for highlighting their service.

Best regards,

Vancouver Quadra Diamond Jubilee Medal Recipients
