Tune of the Month by Amy Shaw

This month’s tune was composed by our own Sherry Ladig in honor of Laura MacKenzie, on the occasion of Laura being honored by the IMDA in November. That was a great event indeed, featuring performances by Laura and many other local musicians. What a great thing it was to celebrate our “high priestess of Celtic music,” who has given so much to the traditional music communityhere in Minnesota! I was in the green room warming up when the Ladigs premiered this pipe march that night, but I have since given it a good listen and I think it’s a great tune and a fitting tribute to Laura. Not only that, but Sherry has composed a nice harmony to go with it. Sherry is herself a pillar of our musical community. She is the writer of the insightful book reviews in the An Leabhragán column in this newsletter. Sherry is also a composer and arranger who plays piano in several groups, including Dunquin, The New Pearl Buttons, Dalwhinnie, and O'Rourke's Feast. She has been writing new tunes in the traditional style for at least thirty years and her compositions are widely played all over the world. Her best-known tune is probably the slow air titled Eileen Collins, which you can hear on the O’Rourke’s Feast CD released by New Folk Records last summer. May Sherry’s latest tune, “Laura MacKenzie, Queen of the Pipes,” enjoy the same popularity!

The Gaelic Corner By Will Kenny

When you first start learning Irish, or if you just occasionally try to translate a bit of Irish into English with a dictionary, it might appear that the Irish "have at it" way too much ... in the sense that "at" pops up in literal translations way more than you would expect. "At" is translated by the preposition ag (pronounced "egg") in Irish. Naturally, it translates "at" quite straightforwardly in a phrase like ag siopa, "at a shop." But ag is also used with what is called a "verbal noun" in Irish, which roughly corresponds to the -ing form of the verb. Thus I might not only be ag siopa, "at a shop", but I also might be ag siopadóireacht, "at shopping", that is, doing the act of shopping. Tá mé ag siopadóireacht ag siopa, "I am at shopping at a shop". In similar fashion, I could be ag ól ("at drinking") or ag snámh ("at swimming"), and so on. Now, ag is used very often in a common construction to express "to have". For example, Tá carr agam literally means, "A car is at me". But it is how we say, "I have a car," as there is no stand-alone verb expressing "to have" in Irish. And to bring things full circle, this use of ag ("at") to express "have" is used for knowledge and abilities. If I say, Tá snámh agam, literally, "Swimming is at me", it means, "I know how to swim", or simply, "I can swim". That sets up statements like this one: Tá snámh agam, agus tá mé ag snámh. Literally, "Swimming is at me, and I am at swimming." That doesn't make much sense unless you understand the idiomatic aspects of those uses of "at". The statement simply means, "I can swim, and I am swimming." Put Sunday afternoon, January 25, on your calendar for Gaeltacht Minnesota's annual fundraiser. A few bucks gets you a great afternoon of entertainment, maybe a priceless (well ...) door prize,

and it helps us maintain our very lean budget to provide another year of free Irish lessons to the community. The event will run 2-6 pm at the Dubliner, with music and dancing and more, all for only five dollars! More details at our web site at www.gaelminn.org. We hope to see you there!

If you have been hoping to join our regular Monday classes, your next opportunity is coming up. We will offer our four-week "Intro to Irish Gaelic" through St. Paul Community Education during the first four Mondays in March. Registration is through Community Ed, and will open on-

line on January 2. We'll have more information, and links, on our web site at www.gaelminn.org in the first week of January. We had a wonderful time at our 34th annual Christmas Dinner, ably hosted at Kieran's. We had a good crowd not only of students and instructors, but of the family and friends who give us support and encouragement throughout the year. This is one of our most cherished traditions, the very first dinner being held just a few months after the first classes, and it was great to come together for a very entertaining evening. Our thanks to Martin McHugh, Pete Tritz, and Tom Lockney for giving us some great tunes, we truly appreciate their generosity in sharing their talents with us. Thanks, too, to everyone who shared a "party piece": we had songs and stories and even a joke, it was good fun. Finally, special thanks to Suin, who regularly handles all the arrangements that make this event go so smoothly, and then she turns around and does the same for our annual fundraiser. In recognition of her wonderful volunteer service over a long period of time, Suin was awarded the infamous traveling trophy this year. Congratulations, Suin! Athbhliain faoi mhaise duit! "A prosperous New Year to you!"

Old Log Theatre in Greenwood MN Presents Irish Comedy January 16—March 7

This Broadway play was written by John Patrick Shanley, award winning author of Doubt (Tony Award) and Moonstruck (Academy Award) and is performed by Raye Birk; Candace Barrett Birk; Sandra Struthers Clerc and Michael Booth. Outside Mullingar premiered on Broadway February 2013. Tony Nominated for Best Play of 2013.

Outside Mullingar is about the romance of Anthony and Rosemary, neighbors in rural Ireland, who are nearing their middle years. It is by

turns poetic, uplifting and funny. Anthony is an introverted farmer and Rosemary is the woman who vows to have him at all costs. When Anthony's father threatens to disinherit his son, Rosemary steps into the middle of a land feud and family eccentricities beyond what one might imagine. On the brink of romantic catastrophe, this one-of-a-kind Irish heroine fights against time and mortality in hopes of securing her dream of love. A compassionate, delightful play about how it’s never too late to take a chance on love.

North Connaught Style Intrigues Young Flute Player By Jan Casey

Traditional musician Emma Fitzgerald, who hails from Michigan, has been listening to traditional music since she was little. Emma grew up in a musical family (her mother plays fiddle), has played Irish flute for several years and expanded her own personal study of the instrument when she came to the Twin Cities for college. Since arriving in the Twin Cities, Emma has taken some classes from Norah Rendell at the Center for Irish Music, began going out to sessions regularly, joined the Macalester College student music group Flying Fingers and now plays in the traditional group Trout in the Milk. Emma has taken a leadership role in Flying Fingers, a group that allows students who have had little or no exposure to Irish music to learn about the style and try it out, as well as providing a presence for Irish traditional music in the Macalester community. (Flying Fingers has performed in the Tea Room at IMDA’s Day of Irish Dance.) Emma used her IMDA Educational Grant to attend the Minnesota Irish Music Weekend (MIM) in June. She looked forward to workshops with Catherine McEvoy, who plays in the North Connaught style – her favorite style. She has been striving to inject this influence into her own playing. Emma tells us that she “loves the rhythmic pulse that flute players in that area of Ireland have.” Emma had studied sean nos dance and was looking forward to continuing with Brian Hart at MIM. Emma commented, “I have found that learning to dance greatly increases the understanding of the music, and vice versa.” Emma was especially anxious to attend MIM this summer since she was planning to spend a semester abroad studying at University College Cork (UCC) this fall. She was eager to learn as much as she could about the music so that she could make the most of her time in Ireland, take in as much music as she could – and bring it back to Minnesota. Emma’s instructor noted that Emma has demonstrated that she can “glean a lot of information from very little stimulus based on her inner drive to learn,” and that she has “clarity of artistic intention [that] is rare in such a young musician.” Emma is just now returning to the US from Ireland. She writes: “Ireland has been great. I can't believe it's over! Even though I'm not studying music, this semester I got to take flute lessons with one of my favorite flute players, Conal O Grada. He's the flute teacher at UCC. It was incredible being able to learn from him every week, one on one. The department also let me borrow one of their flutes, a Hammy Hamilton, because it's much better than mine. I also took two other music courses, Intro to Irish Trad and Music in Modern Ireland, both very informative courses. I didn't get to go to many festivals because of timing and other commitments, but I did make it to a very small one in Ballyvourney called Éigse Dhiarmuid Uí Súilleabháin. The flute workshop was fantastic, taught by Paul McGratton.” The Irish Music and Dance Association is pleased to help this dedicated young musician continue her study of the Irish flute. Jan Casey coordinates IMDA’s Educational Grant program. The deadline for applications for 2015 is April 27. Application information is available on the IMDA website – www.IMDA-MN.org.

Northwoods Songs: Irish Songs from Lumberjacks and Great Lakes Sailors By Brian Miller

Northwoods Songs features a new song each month pulled from my research into old songs collected in the pine woods region that stretches from New Brunswick west through northern Minnesota. In the 1800s, a vibrant culture of singing and song-making developed in lumber camp bunkhouses and on Great Lakes ships. The repertoire and singing style were greatly influenced by Irish folk repertoire and Irish singing styles. Many singers in the region had Irish background themselves. Each installment of Northwoods Songs is also published online at www.evergreentrad.com/northwoods-songs. As of December 2013, I will also videotape myself singing the song of the month. My hope is that others will learn some of these songs and make them their own as I have. Links to song videos will be posted along with the online version. -Brian Miller

I’m a friend of the poor man wherever I roam, no matter what countryman he, I will share in my loaf and the meat on the bone, with a gramacree welcome for thee.

Each night in the week, each week in the year, with our hearts and our conscience both clear, We will fill up the glass for to help the time pass, and drink from the pitcher of beer.

(Gallagher repeats these last two lines here with the same melody)

The child in the cradle, the dog at the door, the fireside cheerful and bright, The old folks at the table with plenty galore will welcome you in with delight.

Their blessings they’ll give, it’s “Long may you live, and merrily pass over each year,” They will hand you their glass for to help the time pass, and drink from the pitcher of beer.

Oh be cheerful and merry for life’s but a day, we’ll die and leave others behind, For to fret and to worry, to weep and to pray, when relief we can easi-lye find.

Just pull up a chair and drive away care, and that will turn sorrow to cheer, Tell a story or two, let it be old or new, and drink from the pitcher [spoken:] of beer.

_______________________________ We are back to Beaver Island, Michigan this week with a song I transcribed from the singing of Dominick Gallagher as recorded by Ivan Walton in 1940. Gallagher (1867-1954), like many other Beaver Islanders of his generation, was the son of a man from Arranmore, County Donegal. Gallagher’s father, “Big Dominic” was himself a great singer with many songs imported from Arranmore. However, the younger Gallagher did not get this song from his father. He told Walton: “I learned that song in the lumber woods when I was 17 years of age [ca. 1884], the first winter I left home, from an old French Canadian… …I was up in a camp called Camp Three. It was built new that fall ..up at Grand Marais on Lake Superior shores and that winter the snow was about five feet and a half on the level and I shoveled snow all winter for 16 dollars a month and put in 14 hours some days.” As with “Barney Blake” (See Northwoods Songs, Oct. 2014), the Grand Marais mentioned is almost certainly Grand Marais, Michigan. And, like “Barney Blake,” “The Pitcher of Beer” is a song that began on the Irish music hall stage and then entered the unaccompanied tradition in the north woods lumber camps. The original was written by Edward Harrigan, one of the most renowned Irish songwriters of the 19th century for the 1880 play The Mulligan Guard’s Christmas… so there is a seasonal connection.
