LITTLE THINGS

The space shuttle Discovery was once grounded. not by technical difficulties or a lack of government funding, but by wood-peckers.

Yellow-shafted flicker woodpeckers found the insulating foam on the shuttle’s ex-

ternal fuel tank irresistible material for pecking.

The foam was critical to the shuttle’s performance. Without it ice formed on the

tank when it was filled with the supercold fuel ... ice that could break free during liftoff and

damage the giant spacecraft. The shuttle was grounded until the damage was repaired.

Many things in life - marriages, careers, churches - are frequent-ly damaged not

only by big things - but by the little things. In marri-age, criticism, lack of respect, and tak-

ing each other for granted peck away at the relationship and keep us from reaching our

highest potential.

“Who has despised the day of small things?” (Zech. 4:10).
