THANK YOU!...the entire staff and I offer our sincere thanks for the many cards and prayers you have offered

during the Advent & Christmas season. We are very much looking forward to what God has to offer us in 2018.

This year we will be experiencing something very special…a year without a debt! Wow, what a true blessing

this is and also what a wonderful challenge God is giving us, his beloved servants. God is giving us this

opportunity to work together, become more involved, help expand and generously support the active ministries

of St. John’s. That is right; it is going to take all of us, working together and trusting in God to guide us into the

unknown future.

We begin right away with several things happening this month:

January 5th—6

th council retreat at Lutheridge and then on Sunday January 7

th, the installation of our 2018

council. Tracey Bishop, Gil Bulman, Matt Cutshall, Nan Dempsey, Judy Drake, Doug Kurz, Conny Linder,

Benji Mills, Rick Sprang, Ron Thomas, Janine Wagner, & Larry White.

January 21st we will have a Congregational Special Event with Bishop Yoos in the PLC after our one

worship service at 11:00am. This event will be an opportunity for us to enjoy a catered lunch and spend time

with the Bishop as he explains the call process for our Associate Pastor. (Details on page 8) During the one

worship service at 11am we will be welcoming and installing our call

committee: Helen Collier, Chris Towe, Leslie Connor, Kevin Lageman,

Erica McCarthy and Corey Carson.

January 22nd kicks off another year with LMM (Lutheran Men in Mission)

and getting to know our new leader Chris McCarthy

January 28th is Youth Sunday at both worship services and a time to

experience the Gospel through the eyes of our LCY (Lutheran Church

Youth) plus we will be baptizing three people.

What an exciting month of opportunities and for us to embrace that “ we

are God’s servants, working together”. There will also be other ministries

and groups meeting to begin making some exciting plans for the coming

year. May God grant each one of us wisdom in understanding how each of

us can offer our gifts in supporting this body of Christ we call St. John’s

Lutheran Church.

New Christian Education Opportunities from 01/07 through 2/11.

Kids and Youth Classes

Classes for Pre-K through 5th grade are in the downstairs Children's Sunday School wing

below the Fellowship Hall. Our Lutheran based Spark program connects kids with the same

stories they’ll hear in worship each week, so that the lessons are more easily learned and

remembered Each class is tailored to its age-level with caring and fun teachers

and hands-on learning opportunities.

Confirmation Class for grades 6 through 8 are upstairs, above the staff offices. Pastor Mike is leading this year’s

study.

High School Students meet in the Youth Room of the Parish Life Center with Corey Carson and Kevin Lageman for

discussions about life topics and current videos.

Adult Classes:

Anxious for Nothing: Doug & Sue Kurz lead a new study of Max Lucado's new book Anxious for Nothing: Finding

Calm in a Chaotic World; a real life look at Philippians 4:6-7 and how it speaks to anxiety, depression, and stress in

everyday life. Join Doug & Sue in Room L11 (below the sanctuary).

Alpha and Omega: This thoughtful, thorough class is continuing to work their way through Psalms in a way that

honors the depth and richness of Scripture. This class meets in L06 (below the sanctuary).

The Story: This class will resume on January 7th.

Contemporary Discussion: Dick and Lori Conn will host this welcoming discussion of current events, opinions,

and our place as Christians in a complex world. Join them for good coffee and good conversation. Meets in the

PLC Senior Room.

Martin's Table: Gil Bulman will lead an exploration of Ancient Secrets of the Bible. All are welcome to drop in or

attend the whole series! Meets in the PLC conference room.

Our Capital Campaign Growing Our Future

We have been blessed with our $100,000 Capital Campaign! The landscaping of our front campus has been

completed and looks beautiful. The community appreciates our efforts and can't help but be drawn to our church.

The campaign closed as of December 31st and next month we will announce the total raised for this project that

will continue growing into the future. Thank you all for your generous contributions!

St. John's Endowment Committee On Homecoming Sunday, September 24th, the 2017 Endowment

Committee was honored to present grants to the following organizations:

Christmas in Action – Spartanburg – Home repairs for need based homeowners, using volunteers from

organizations such as churches and businesses (and college students such as Georgia Southern who stayed

in the PLC)

Daily Bread Ministries (Greer Soup Kitchen and STEP – Shelter to Empower People) – mission is to provide ministry

and services in Greer area

Divinity Care Facility – provides a range of life saving supports and services to adult men in Spartanburg

Greater Spartanburg Ministries – provides emergency assistance to poor and needy of

Spartanburg County

Hope Remains Youth Ranch – a place where youth, families and adults are transformed

through hope in Jesus Christ using counseling, mentoring and equine therapy in the

Spartanburg area.

John F Green Spartanburg Science Center – provides science education and

enrichment for students and adults of Spartanburg County

LEFA (Lifting Each, Feeding All) – Providing a free meal to the community every Thursday evening. (Located at

Holy Communion Lutheran Church)

MARY’S House (Ministry Alliance for Regaining Your Safety) – serving and providing for victims of domestic

violence and sexual assault

Palmetto Council, Boy Scouts of America –multi-cultural markets service initiative in

the Northside.

SOCIAL MINISTRY This year in Social Ministry we will be focusing on the Backpack Buddy Program, the

Mobile Food Pantry, PEP (Pine Street Elementary Party), Thanksgiving lunch at Mary H. Wright, and Christmas Angel

Trees for local schools. We will have food drives at various Bi-Lo locations to collect food for backpack Buddies, the

first of these will be January 7th, from 1-6pm at the Bi-Lo on Reidville Rd.. This is a very worthwhile project and

provides meals for 75 children at Mary H. Wright for the weekends. Bundle up and come help with this project! If you

have an interest in Social Ministry, which ministers to the needs of the community and helps within the church, please

contact Tracey Bishop at 978-5010.

A night of magic …all aboard the Polar Express!

Our conductor, Chris McCarthy punches your ticket for this frosty journey. Children watch in wonder as the Polar Express transports them to the North Pole while learning about friendship, bravery, and the spirit of Christmas ... all

you have to do is punch your ticket and …

On Dec 1, the Fellowship Hall was transformed into a Winter Wonderland for the First Annual Polar Express Party. The kids of St. John's and their families (while in their pajamas) enjoyed watching the movie on a large screen, fellowship, dinner, a hot chocolate bar, and even an appearance from the Conductor of the Polar Express!. It was a huge success and everyone had fun! It was a great way to kick off the holiday season! A special thanks to Erica and Chris McCarthy, Matt Cutshall, Tina Nichols, Leslie Connor and Chip Hicks for making this event magical!

The North Pole is a long trip and Tina Nichols made sure there were plenty of goodies and warm cups of hot chocolate to fill hungry tummies!

Next up for the Young Family Ministry: An "adult only" Epiphany Party at the Cutshall's home on Saturday, January 13th. Please RSVP to Beth at [email protected] if you plan to attend, due to this event being a catered meal.

Sixth Annual St. John’s Christmas Celebration The planning committee would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all who gave, so generously, of

their time and their talents to make our Christmas Celebration one to remember! As we watched the

Christmas performances, enjoyed the various savory and/or sweet treats, and visited with one another,

we witnessed, first hand, the engagement of God in our daily lives.

A Note from the Christmas In Action volunteers from Georgia Southern University who were housed in our

Parish Life Center in December: “Thank you St. John Lutheran Church for being such warm and giving hosts. Your church was such a beautiful and perfect place to stay. Our group really enjoyed our trip in Spartanburg and we hope to be back! Thanks for keeping us in your prayers. Merry Christmas!”

St. John's Columbarium and Memorial Garden - what was the inspiration? In 1991 Linda Turner visited churches with beautiful frescoes. The churches were very old and quite small. In

their basements vessels were beautifully stacked and the names and dates of birth and

death were engraved on each. The area was so peaceful and the peoples cremains would

forever remain in the church they loved. Returning to St. John's, Linda discussed the

concept with Robin Hunsinger and they presented the idea of niches and a memorial

garden to the pastor and council. It was agreed that the Lineberger Courtyard would be

the ideal place for the final resting place for St. John's members. In the past twenty plus

years, many have been interred in this place of beauty and repose. Our Columbarium

Courtyard is currently in process of being enhanced. In front of the two columns of

niches there are paved areas to hold services or for others to come and spend time with a

loved one. Thanks to Doug Kurz, Council Chair for Property and Nan Phillips who worked tirelessly with the design

team to create our multi-purpose area of joy and love. Benches, planters, plantings, and other items are needed to

complete the design. You may contribute to this project in memory of loved ones or simply as a gift to the church. Many

thanks to those who have contributed over the years to make this dream a reality. There will be a dedication in the spring

of 2018 with a history of the courtyard.

HAVE YOU SEEN THE CORNERSTONES?

Groundbreaking at 415 South Pine Street for our congregation’s new facility was held on May 2, 1948 and construction

began the next day.

The high point in the construction of the new church was the transfer of the original cornerstone from Woman’s Memorial

to the new edifice on Palm Sunday, April 3, 1949. The inscription on that stone which had been laid at the old church on

April 30, 1907 read, “A WORK OF FAITH.” On the occasion of the transfer, Pastor Shealy said, “The transferring of this

stone…will indicate immediately a continuation of the congregation on the same solid foundations.” But not with the

same name! The original name had honored the Woman’s Missionary Society of the S.C. Synod who had given funds to

pay for the first building site on Converse Street. The present congregation had decided to rename the church Saint John’s

when they moved, the most popular name for Lutheran churches. So, the present church building has two cornerstones

with different names.

Large photographs of the sanctuaries of Woman’s Memorial and of St. John’s shortly after construction are in the main

entrance to the PLC, on the side wall over the bench. And now that the new landscaping has cleared the overgrown

shrubbery out, both cornerstones are now visible, one beside the front steps and the other around the opposite corner

toward the courtyard entrance. See them for yourself, and remember our connection to the past as we move into the

future!

SOUP KITCHEN SERVANT TEAMS St. John’s has teams of persons serving at the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen on Forest Avenue, Fridays from 10:00am until

12:30pm assisting with food preparation and serving, straightening up food storage, stocking shelves, helping in the “children’s

room,” cleaning up, etc. We are in need of more volunteers. If you want to spend a rewarding 2 hours helping prepare food to

serve some hungry folks, please contact any of the soup kitchen servants listed below. The Servant Teams serving for June are:
