We also celebrate Robin Weinbender, our new church office administrator. She is full time and in addition to the basic
secretarial duties she will also be, keeping the master calendar, scheduling outside events, handling many church
financial transactions, working closely with the pastors and maintaining the church office. Please make some time to
welcome Robin.

This month we will follow Jesus command to be "sent out" into the community as we host PEP Pine Street
Elementary Party on August 16th. This is an exciting and interactive way of connecting with our neighborhood
school…their staff, parents and children. If you would like to be involved in this event, please call the church office.
Also, on the Sunday prior (August 11th), the principal of the school will be our guest speaker during both worship
services. Sunday School Rally day will be on August 18th. There will be some presentations about the new
Faith formation classes that will be offered to help us grow deeper in our relationship with God.
Please continue to read this newsletter to get more details about PEP and Rally Day as well as
the many other activities that God is encouraging us to experience that will help us have the
confidence to be “sent out” to share the Love of God.
Peace,
Pastor Mike

Blast From The Past This article was from a bulletin from years
past
WHAT A SAD DAY it would be for us if the creator and sustainer of the universe, the redeemer and comforter of man
would take a rest this summer. We might be praying at home or in church and suddenly an impression of loneliness
would come upon us. We would sense that no one was listening to our supplications. If that happened Christ would
cease to be the center of our lives and the Christian conscience governing our morals would not exist. Men's evil
tendencies would flourish without restraint. Of course this will not happen because God has promised he will be with
us always. But didn't we promise God that we would serve him always too? Excluding him from our vacation plans is
falling short of this promise. A respite from our regular jobs should give us the time to seek new ways of serving and
worshiping him.
Many will use their vacations to visit religious landmarks and famous churches. Good churchmen will go out of their
way to attend services each Sunday while traveling. Others will find time to catch up on their religious reading with
such books as The Basic Bible, a new translation using a vocabulary of 1,000 words; Mr. Jones, Meet the Master, by
the late Peter Marshall; Signs of Hope, by Elton Trueblood; The Art of Real Happiness, by Norman Vincent Peale;
Prisoners of Hope, by H.C. Alleman; and Her We Have Stars, by the late Margaret R. Seebach.
VACATIONS are an important part of our way of life. They give us a chance to break away from the tedium of books
and blackboards, the roar of the factory, the humdrum monotony of housework. Vacations mean relaxation from
physical and mental toil, the opportunity to restore the vitality which our daily tasks have taken. Nor matter where we
go or what we do, God should be included in our plans. He never takes a holiday. Not for one second has he relaxed
his love and care for us. In gratitude we should not plan a vacation without him.

Wednesday Prayer Services continue this summer. This will be an opportunity for
members to pray for each other every Wednesday from 12:15-1:00pm in the nave. This will
run from May 29th – August 28
th. During this summer prayer experience there will be soft
music playing in the background as participants will take a prayer guide that will help them
pray for St. John’s, pray for the needs of others as the Holy Spirit leads, and reflect upon
what God is saying to each person. There will be pages dedicated to embracing A.C.T.S.
(Adoration/Praise, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication/Intercession). There will also be a
sheet containing those members and friends on our church’s prayer list and an opportunity for
each participant to lift up prayers for themselves.
This will be a self-led prayerful experience and open to everyone. Please make plans to at least try this unique
opportunity to deepen your relationship with God. At 11am there will be a Bible Study in the PLC conference room
led by Leslie Connor and John Scherberger.
Our regular Wednesday schedule will resume on September 4th as do you ever have that need for a pick me up mid-
week? Sometimes going from Sunday to Sunday and not hearing words of grace, love, forgiveness, mercy and hope
can be a challenge in our world currently. Join the Pastor’s of St. John’s for a mid-week Bible Study, Worship
Experience and Lunch starting September 4th. Bible Study begins at 11am with Worship at 12:15pm and Lunch at
1:00pm, all are welcome.
Learning more about St. John’s Nominating Committee…
Every year in November we have our Annual Congregational meeting. As a part of that
meeting we elect people to become members of our church council. The Nominating
committee is comprised of the outgoing members of council and the senior pastor. This
year, they have already begun meeting and are in the process of discerning who God
wants to be part of the leadership for next year.
The Nominating Committee prays for each other, for God’s wisdom in seeking qualified
candidates who would be assets in the leadership of this congregation and prays over
each candidate during this whole process. Some of the qualities this group looks for in
future leaders are as follows:
a. Models the life of a steward
b. Attends worship services regularly
c. Seeks to grow, and help others grow, in their relationship with Christ
d. Willing to assume responsibility to discern God’s will when making decisions for the
congregation
e. Understands, or is willing to learn what it means to live a life of a disciple
f. Likes to have fun
g. Wants to learn more about how to be active, and help others become active, in the mission and ministries of the
church
h. Regularly attend monthly council meetings and represent a committee
i. Sees the purpose of active ministry, instead of just maintaining ministry
j. Willing to commit the time and creative energy needed to fulfill these
expectations
As you can see, there is much more to this prayerful process of discerning future leaders
of St. John’s than you may think. We will be including the nominating committee in our
prayers over the next several Sundays as they continue meeting and seeking God’s
guidance. If you happened to be contacted by the Nominating Committee, please
remember what you have read, and know that much prayerful deliberation has been given
in contacting you to consider serving as an elected leader of the church.

Social Ministry is now collecting Education Box Tops for donation to the
McCarthy Teszler School so the school can obtain needed supplies. You can place those
box tops in the small plastic sandwich bag on the bulletin board on the wall in the
Fellowship Hall. Thanks!
BINGO at Mountainview Nursing Home happens at 6:30 p.m. the second
Thursday of each month, when 16-20 residents come to play and win prizes, so there is a need for
bingo prize items such as body wash, cologne, stretch bracelets, lap blankets, jewelry, large print
word search books, just to name a few suggestions. You'll find a complete list of suitable items on the
bulletin board near the bingo collection box in the Fellowship Hall. Any church member can come to
Mountainview on a bingo night and join Social Ministry in assisting residents with their bingo buttons
and cards. Contact Luann Bryant or Brenda Ellison if you'd like to help.
A huge thank you for all who supplied Back Backpack Buddies, It's a ministry with a
continuing need throughout the school year for food supplies for weekend meals for school children in need.
Check out the list of items you can donate-- the list is posted on the Social Ministry bulletin board in the
Fellowship Hall and collection bins are in the PLC and in the Fellowship Hall.
Pine Street Elementary Party)… Friday August 16th 10am—1pm. Our fourth collaborative
celebration with Pine Street Elementary will take place during the school’s
"Meet the Teacher/Registration” event. St. John’s will host the families for lunch, have activities with the Boy Scouts,
visits from the fire and police departments, and active fun with inflatable play structures and use of our wonderful
playground. PEP is a great way for us to be a good neighbor to the school and to show the community that our doors
are always open! If you would like to volunteer, please contact Martha Sigmon [email protected] . We’ll
need extra hands all week as we prepare, host, and clean up!
URGENT NEED for Volunteers for CD/Bulletin Deliveries! Two of our team members are moving out of town. We
need couples or individuals to deliver a Sunday bulletin and a CD of the service to 5-6 shut-in church members once a
month. Please contact Cheryl Pettis at [email protected] or 864-316-9983 if you can help with this rewarding
service to others.
Cast call- Are you a 6th to 12th grader? Can you sometime attend the 11am Traditional service?
Would you like to be part of a team? Be an active participant at your church? We are now training
new teammates to join the Crucifer and Acolyte Service Team. It's easy to do, and only requires 1
training per year, and you will only be asked to serve about 1 time per month or less. Training starts
August 11th immediately after the 11am Service, there will be a pizza lunch in the Fellowship Hall
then training will follow and finish by 2pm. Please contact Dana Homan at [email protected],
please take a flyer home with you.

K The ELCA Churchwide Assembly, the primary decision-making body of the church, is a process of communal
spiritual discernment. Finding ourselves in Christ, the fifteenth Churchwide Assembly will be a time for us to be the
living body of Christ guided by the Spirit and conformed to God’s will.
We will meet at the Wisconsin Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, August 5-10, 2019 to discuss and make decisions about how to go about God’s work as a church. This year the assembly will gather under the theme “We are church.”
When the ELCA Churchwide Assembly convenes, its voting members meet with confidence in God’s grace around
word and water, wine and bread, to carry on their work on behalf the entire church. Over the course of the assembly,
voting members:
• Hear reports and review the work of church wide officers, leaders and units;
• Receive and consider proposals from synod assemblies;
• Elect officers, board members and other leaders as specified by the constitution or bylaws;
• Establish ELCA church wide policy;
• Worship together;
• Adopt a budget; and
• Conduct other business related to the ELCA church wide organization.
Let me also highlight one of the important responsibilities of the assembly -- the election of the Presiding Bishop and
Secretary as well as persons to the Church Council and to church wide boards and committees. Voting members will
receive information regarding nomination and election processes in early 2019. Please think about gifted people willing to serve this church.
As we prepare ourselves for the 2019 Churchwide Assembly, let’s remember that it is a process of communal spiritual
discernment to bring about God’s will for God’s people. Together, we will worship, pray, engage in Bible study, deliberate and conduct business in plenary sessions.
When members of the assembly participate in and make decisions about the mission and ministry of the ELCA: We
are church. We are Lutheran. We are church together. We are church for the sake of the world.
God’s blessings,
Elizabeth A. Eaton
