We received a letter from the family of a patient. The letter said from the moment Clara walked into the patient’s room, her personality brightened everything around her. She clearly introduced herself and what she was going to be doing as soon as she entered. Clara also took time to have some meaningful conversation with both patients in the room leaving them with large smiles on their faces. The family said she was very important to their loved one’s care by demonstrating sincere compassion. Another example of Clara’s care was with an elderly lady who was at the end of her life. She was having a terrible time getting rest and finding peace. The family said Clara felt the tension in the room and began singing Amazing Grace, while she cleaned and completed the turndown service. As the days went by and Clara and the family grew closer, Clara would hold the patient’s hand and sing Amazing Grace because it soothed the patient enough so she could relax and fall asleep. Eventually all the patient looked forward to each day was Clara singing at her bedside. The family contacted 7 South and asked Clara to sing Amazing Grace at the patient’s funeral. She did. She sang again at the family’s dinner following the service. Clara, you are definitely the Heart of Soul of CAMC.

Neha Sehgal, DO

Emergency Medicine

January 2017

Dr. Neha Sehgal is an emergency medicine resident. The person who nominated Dr. Sehgal said she immediately realized the severity of her niece’s appendix cancer and quickly ordered tests and X-rays in order to properly treat her. While awaiting test results, Dr. Sehgal visited the patient often, ensuring that she was as comfortable as possible, even going the extra mile to get blankets and ice. Dr. Sehgal took the extra time to make the patient feel like she was the only patient in the ER at that time. The family said that Dr. Sehgal’s nurturing and empathic demeanor made discussing the horrific test results a little more bearable. The family was thankful Dr. Sehgal's shared in their grief and selflessly continued caring for the patient well after her shift ended that evening. Dr. Sehgal continued to check on the patient after she was admitted to the hospital. And as soon as Dr. Sehgal heard of the patient’s passing, she immediately visited the family. She helped the family with paperwork, ran errands throughout the hospital, and even went to the patient’s room to retrieve her personal belongings and carried them to the family’s vehicle. The family ended the letter by saying they are forever grateful for Dr. Sehgal’s compassion and caring manner, which was warm and always professional.

Lorrie Lewis

Surgical Trauma ICU

February 2017

Lorrie Lewis is a nurse in the surgical trauma ICU at General Hospital. A patient – who was from out of state - was admitted to the STICU the week before Christmas. The patient’s wife and two children were with him at the hospital. Lorrie got her children involved to make sure the patient’s children would have a nice Christmas, even though they were away from their home during a scary time for the whole family. Using her money and time, Lorrie and her children picked out Christmas gifts for the two kids and brought them to the waiting room for them to enjoy. Lorrie also made sure the kids had presents to open at the hotel they were staying in, for Christmas morning. Lorrie is always making sure other people have what they need, and never asks for anything in return. This is not the first time we’ve recognized her. She was recognized in 2006 for her volunteer service to the community. Lorrie’s heart and soul are truly all about service and caring for humanity.

Dr. Sri Lakshmi Kala Bonda

Case Management

April 2017

Dr. Sri Lakshmi Kala Bonda is a hospitalist at Memorial Hospital. The post cardiac care unit had a patient that needed oxygen prior to discharging him home. His only insurance was VA which required that he be evaluated by them at their facility in Clarksburg before approving his oxygen. This would mean he would be discharged home without oxygen while he waited for an appointment because he could not afford the cost of $150/week. This would not have been a safe discharge. Dr. Bonda was his attending physician and when told about the situation said that she would pay for his oxygen for a week until he could get to his appointment. The person who wrote the nomination said Dr. Bonda is kind and a pleasure to work with. Her act of kindness definitely enhanced and promoted the welfare of this patient. Dr. Bonda, thank you for putting your Heart and Soul into the care of your patients.

Labor and Delivery Group at WCH

Labor and Delivery

April 2017

We recently had a patient come to Women and Children’s Hospital to deliver her baby. For some, birth is not always a happy time. This woman’s son had been pre-natally diagnosed with a rare disorder that is fatal. She and her husband decided to carry the baby to term and have a c-section in order to spend as much time with him as possible. In the OR, staff sang happy birthday shortly after the baby was born. Staff never left the patient and husband during the entire process. They took care of the baby right after birth and did all things the mother wished for in regards to his care. Nurses completed the mother’s birth plan and added some personal touches. Employees ensured the family had a box of keepsakes including molds of the baby’s feet and hands. Plus nurses ensured the family had plenty of pictures and video to remember their baby. He only lived 51 minutes. The patient wrote a lengthy letter thanking the staff for their support, kindness and encouragement. She concluded by saying she was touched and inspired by the staff’s actions. I’d like to also thank you for exceeding the patient’s expectations and giving the family a very special day.

Scott Easterling, Kim Meadows, Dr.James Perry

Cardiopulmonary ICU

June 2017

A patient in the Cardiopulmonary ICU was at the end of life and ready to be discharged home with hospice. He had told some of the staff that he had recently been saved in his church and he wanted to be baptized before he passed away. His nurse, Scott, and several other nurses began to look for ways to help him to have this happen. He had received offers of baptism – but the methods were not in accordance with his beliefs. Scott, Kim and Dr. Perry as well as several others were able to obtain a swimming pool, and with the help of maintenance, it was brought into his room and filled with water. This patient, with his family in attendance, was able to be baptized per his wishes before being discharged. These individuals exemplified caring and compassion that helped ease the mind of a patient at the end of his life. Thank you for your compassion, respect and service in the care and wishes of the patient.

5 South Memorial Staff

5 South Memorial

June 2017

There was a patient on 5 South, Memorial Hospital, who didn't have long to live. The patient and his high school sweetheart had decided to get married while he was in the hospital. The staff only had a couple of days to make it happen. One nurse, who used to be a florist, made all of the flower arrangements. Decorations and cake were provided by the case manager and social worker. A wedding is very special but this couple also needed a beautiful honeymoon suite. The staff converted one of 5 South’s biggest rooms into a tropical getaway. The windows were covered with a beach scene, rose petals on the bed and floor, chocolate covered strawberries, sparkling juice, battery operated candles, and towels made into the shape of a heart. The next day the family expressed how much this truly meant to them. They said they did not even feel like they were in a hospital that day. They said they were treated like they were at a resort. The giving that was shown that day was exceptional by so many people and the departments that leant a hand. Thank you for putting your heart and soul into creating a special day for this patient and family.

Cortney Putillion

W&C MRI

July 2017

Cortney Putillion is an MRI Technologist at Women and Children’s Hospital. The Women and Children’s Hospital Imaging Services team was recently involved in the diagnosis and evaluation of a very special three and half month old infant that had a large mass of brain tissue protruding through its skull. The baby had to be transferred to another hospital, out of state. When she heard this, Cortney researched the area surrounding the hospital where the family would be and purchased gift cards for Subway, Starbucks and BP Gas. Cortney made certain the family received the donation before its departure to help lessen their financial burden. She also encouraged co-workers to donate, pray and send good vibes the family’s way. Thank you for your compassion and empathy to showed to this patient’s family.

Donna Bell & Taylor Wilson

Anesthesia & ICU Pediatric

July 2017

Donna Bell is a nurse anesthetist and Taylor Wilson is a charge nurse in the pediatric ICU at Women and Children’s Hospital. They were nominated for their exceptional care of a very young patient with pneumonia. The person who nominated them said Donna instantly put the family at ease and quickly connected with the patient. She took her time to describe the procedure and care, listened to the family’s questions and empathized with the patient and family. The family was touched when Donna visited them the next morning, at the end of her shift, demonstrating again her deep concern for her patients. Taylor cared for the patient in the PICU. The family said she was smart and very well trained. But what impressed them the most was what they called her “soft skills.” Taylor is a great communicator, kind, patient and compassionate. The family was grateful when she advocated on their behalf with other care providers. The family concluded its letter saying its total experience was positive, but these two women really stood out. Thank you both for your demonstrating an expertise in patient care while also making a personal connection with the child and family.

Lindsey Mize

Lighthouse Child Care Center

August 2017

This Heart and Soul award is bitter sweet. Just before we announced last month that we had to close the Lighthouse Child Care and Development Center for financial reasons, we received a nomination for Lindsey Mize who teaches preschool there. We received several letters supporting her nomination. She is truly loved and appreciated by co-workers, students and their parents. The letters said Lindsey: • Makes every child in her class feel special and loved • Encourages parents to participate throughout the school year • Takes the time to learn each child’s personality • Makes learning fun • Encourages each child to explore ideas, ask questions and investigate different topics • Is a pro at problem solving and teaching children to manage conflicts • Leads by example The nomination said Lindsey works with children in many different areas of their development including self-help, language, literacy and social and emotional skills. Thank you for your exceptional work with the children and parents of the Lighthouse.

Angela Hackney, Rose Thevenin, Travis Messer

HIM and I/S

August 2017

Rose Thevenin, is a scribe supervisor for transcription, Travis Messer and Angela Hackney work on business applications in information services. They were nominated for their exceptional problem-solving when our voice recognition vendor for dictation and transcription was a victim of a cyber-attack that hit many companies in June. All lines of communication with the vendor were lost when they shut down all of their systems to prevent a breach of their customers’ data. Clinicians were able to dictate, but the files were not transmitting to the application for recognition and transcription. The person who nominated them said Rose’s leadership skills and understanding of the scribe role was invaluable while Travis and Angie worked tirelessly to access the voice files. Those files were housed on a secure local server. Travis and Angie had to put them in a format transcriptionists could hear and transcribe. Rose developed and implemented a process of transcribing those reports and entering them in Cerner using her scribing skills. Angie developed a spreadsheet to allow transcriptionists to print and monitor their progress and track completed documents. Thank you for really stepping up and working out of your normal routine to ensure those records were turned around timely for clinicians and patients.

Anna Reepe

Resource Center for Case Management

September 2017

Anna Reepe is the social worker for 5 South, Memorial Hospital. One of our patients had been here for a lengthy amount of time receiving chemotherapy and radiation treatments. The patient was eventually referred to hospice care. Throughout his stay, the patient notified staff that his last wish was to go to a baseball game. Anna contacted the patient’s physicians and the West Virginia Power to see if there was any way this could be a possibility. Not only was she able to arrange for the patient to go to a Power game, she was able to get a box suite to allow friends and staff that had cared for him on 5 South to go as well. The patient even got to throw out the first pitch for the game. Thanks to Anna’s care, compassion and determination ensured the patient was able to have a wonderful time. Anna ensured the patient’s safety and allowed him to relax away from his hospital room. When asked how the event went, the patient said it was "heavenly." Anna, Thank you for making one of this patient’s final days so special.

Maysel Rawson

Volunteer Services

September 2017

If she looks familiar it could be because she’s volunteered at General Hospital for more than 31 years. Or it could be that you saw her on the news when we threw her a birthday party. Maysel just turned 100 years old. She reliably arrives each Monday morning for her flower desk duties with a smile and often a story to tell about her “greats” (her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren). Maysel can be seen delivering flowers, mail and smiles. She has volunteered in several areas including the hospital switchboard, the gift shop and the flower desk. Maysel served for many years on the CAMC Foundation’s Women & Children’s Gala committee. In those days, the Gala was often held at Edgewood Country Club and Maysel was often the seamstress who helped sew the table clothes and napkins. She has also served on the CAMC General Auxiliary Board and in 2016 even donated her creative talents on behalf of CAMC to create the program cover for the annual Auxiliary to the West Virginia Hospital Association. Maysel paints and creates her own Christmas card each year which she hand delivers to several people around the hospital during the holiday season. Maysel thank you so much for your dedication to the hospital, patients and staff through the years.

Leslie Johnson and Craig Hansel

Rehab Therapy General Hospital

October 2017

This is Craig Hansel, lead therapist in medical rehabilitation therapy and Leslie Johnson, director of therapies. They were notified that one of their staff members had been taken to the ED because she was not feeling well. Leslie and Craig dropped what they were doing to attend to the employee knowing the employee didn't have family in the Charleston area. The ER physician recommended the employee go back to Pittsburgh to see her specialist for follow up care. However, the illness did not warrant ambulance transport. Craig and Leslie demonstrated kindness and charity of giving up their time and money of making the long trip to transport the employee to Pittsburgh. Leslie drove the employee while Craig followed in the employee’s car. The two of them sat with the employee in the ED until her mom arrived at the hospital later that evening. As the person nominating them wrote, Craig and Leslie put this employee first and went above and beyond the call of duty driving hundreds of miles and spending several hours away from their families. Thank you both for putting your Heart and Soul into the care of a co-worker.

Kristi Childress and Craig Hansel

Med Rehab Therapies

October 2017

This is Craig Hansel, he is the lead therapist and Kristi Childress is an occupational therapist – they both work in medical rehabilitation therapy. An employee went to the ER after falling at home and was diagnosed with an ankle fracture that required surgery. Craig and Kristi took the lead in making sure the co-worker had everything he needed at discharge, including a ride home, groceries, medicine, food, medical equipment and they even tidied up his home. Kristi helped clean his home so he could be as safe as possible maneuvering with his injuries and weight bearing limitations. Kristi did his laundry regularly and ensured he has a shower every few days. This employee did not have a phone, so Kristi purchased a pre-paid phone for him. She took him to the grocery store and helped him pay his bills. Craig and Kristi took turns making sure this employee got to and from his ortho trauma appointments safely because he has no one he can rely on for help. They worked with other staff to provide him with the assistance and care he needed while recovering from his devastating injury. Thank you both for putting your Heart and Soul into the care of this co-worker.

Wynter Morgan

Teays Valley ER

November 2017

This is Wynter Morgan, night shift charge nurse in the Teays Valley Hospital emergency department. Wynter was nominated twice for separate actions. One night there was a critical trauma patient that arrived in the ER in life threatening condition. This patient needed immediate transfer to General Hospital, however, there was no critical care EMS ambulances available with a nurse on board. To prevent a delay and give the patient the best chance for survival Wynter, without hesitation, assigned another nurse to take over charge nurse duties while she cared for the patient on the way to the trauma center. On another occasion, Wynter was off work, but came to the ER when the physician requested to have a sexual assault nurse examiner perform an exam and treat the patient. She spent 3 to 4 hours working with the patient and ER physician completing all of the legal procedures that are required in these cases. Thank you for consistently putting your Heart and Soul into the care of patients.

Marty D. Henley

Anesthesia

November 2017

This is Marty Henley, chief CRNA. CAMC Primary Care-Nitro had a patient that needed multiple services during the same visit. This patient has autism, is non-verbal and is prone to violent outbursts. When the office told Marty what it wanted to accomplish, she jumped into action and pulled together a team to care for this patient. Departments involved with providing a safe, non-threatening, respectful and compassionate care of this patient included anesthesia, MRI personnel, security, registration, lab, dental, PACU. She coordinated communications to make sure everyone was on the same page and that nothing was left out. Even though she was out of the country on the date of the testing, Marty made sure others were in place to move forward with the best care possible for the patient. Thank you for your leadership, compassion and teamwork in the care of this patient.
