National Collection for the Archdiocese of the

Military Services (AMS) USA The National Collection for the

Archdiocese of the Military Ser-vices USA is taken up once every three years. The collection for this will be Saturday and Sunday, Jan-uary 18 and 19 at all of the Mass-es. Envelopes will be in the pews. The AMS operates on a very tight budget and is grateful for the gen-erous spirit throughout our coun-try, including its many veterans and military families.

Pope establishes Sunday of the Word of God Pope Francis issued a “Motu Prorio” instituting the Sunday of the Word of

God. It will be marked each year on the 3rd Sunday of Ordinary Time. Sunday, January 26 will be the first celebration of the Sunday of the Word of God

The Holy Father wrote that there should be “a Sunday given over entirely to the word of God, so as to appreciate the inexhaustible riches contained in that constant dialogue between the Lord and his people.” He wrote a document that provides a summary of the Church’s teaching on Scripture and the place of Scripture within the Liturgy. “A day devoted to the Bible should not be seen as a yearly event buy rather a year-long event, for we urgently need to grow in our knowledge and love of the Scriptures and of the risen Lord, who continues to speak his word and to break bread in the community of believers.”

Pope Francis wrote that the newly designated Sunday “is to be devoted to the celebration, study, and dissemination of the Word of God. The Bible is not meant for a privileged few, it belongs to those called to hear its message and to recognize themselves in its words.” The Bible cannot be monopolized or re-stricted to select groups because it is “the book of the Lord’s people, who, in lis-tening to it, move from dispersion and division towards unity.”

To observe the occasion of the first Sunday of the Word of God, we will have a blessing of Bibles at all of our Masses

on Saturday night and Sunday, January 26 and 26. You are invited to bring your Bibles to Mass with you,

and they will be blessed during the Mass.

Our faith is built up by the Word of God. Through the Scriptures, we learn what the Lord wants us to know about His character and behavior. The more we read

it, the better we know Him. The Bible explains God’s expectations for us, it is our guidebook for life and it reveals His eternal plans.

Let us embrace the Word of God and its life-changing potential.

You can follow up the Sunday of the Word of God with our Monday night Bible Study. The group has taken a break over the holidays and is resuming on Monday, January 27, at 7 p.m. in the Charity

room. (access through back parking lot) The group normally meets weekly.

CALLED TO BE HOLY With this Sunday we begin Ordinary Time. The readings tell

us about God’s relationship with Israel and John the Baptist’s re-lationship with Jesus. Israel’s relationship with God is so close, so intimate, that it is through Israel that God’s “salvation [will] reach to the ends of the earth” (Isaiah 49:6). But we know from John the Baptist that for Israel to accomplish God’s will, it must also rec-ognize that Jesus is the Son of God. During these weeks we also get to know Jesus. 2020 Diocesan Wedding Anniversary Mass All are welcome to our first ever Diocesan Wedding Anni-

versary Mass inside our newly dedicated Cathedral. This Mass celebrates the joy of Christian marriage for all, but we espe-cially invite those couples who are celebrating 20+ years of marriage in 2020. Mass for the Protection of Unborn Children 47th Observance of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision

In observance of the Supreme Court Decision Roe v. Wade that legalized abortion, Bishop Vann invites all the Catholic community to observe the day as a Day of Reparation. Catho-lics are encouraged to practice fasting, abstinence, and prayer on that day. Bishop Vann also invites our Catholic community as well as people of all good will to join together in prayer for an end to abortion, healing for those involved in abortion, and an increased respect for all human life at the Mass for the Pro-tection of Unborn Children on Wed., Jan. 22, at 7 p.m. in Christ Cathedral.

SAN VICENTE (Siglo III) 22 de enero San Vicente nació en Zaragoza, España y, debido a su buen uso de la palabra y formación académica, fue nombrado como coadjutor del obispo Valerio para que le ayudara en la predicación, pues el obispo era tartamudo. Una vez or-denado diácono se distinguió por la predicación elocuente y la defensa de la fe. Fue arrestado mientras visitaba a su obispo, preso a causa de la persecución impulsada por el emperador Daciano quien, al saber que visitó a su obispo mandó que lo apresaran, haciéndolo caminar desde Zaragoza hasta Valencia. Una vez preso se le sometió a la tortura, no obstante, la tortura no lograba nada y el emperador, lleno de ira, mandó que golpearan a los torturadores. Posterior-mente le hizo encerrar en una celda oscura, llena de tiestos filosos para que se cortara sus pies, pero no renunció a su fe cristiana, convirtió al carcelero y cantó himnos de alabanza. REFLEXIONES SOBRE LA PALABRA Hemos sido bautizados con el Espíritu Santo

(PRIMERA LECTURA) Te hago luz de las naciones para que seas mi salvación. Isaías 49, 3. 5-6 El Señor me dijo:

“Tú eres mi siervo, Israel; en ti manifestaré mi glo-ria”.

Ahora habla el Señor el que me formó desde el seno materno, para que fuera su servidor, para hacer que Ja-cob volviera a él y congregar a Israel en torno suyo –tanto así me honró el Señor y mi Dios fue mi fuerza–. Ahora, pues, dice el Señor: “Es poco que seas mi siervo sólo para restablecer a las tribus de Jacob y reunir a los sobrevivientes de Israel; te voy a convertir en luz de las naciones, para que mi salvación llegue hasta los últimos rincones de la tierra”.

(SEGUNDA LECTURA) Gracias y paz os dé Dios nuestro 1 Corintios 1, 1-3 Padre y Jesucristo nuestro Señor.

Yo, Pablo, apóstol de Jesucristo por voluntad de Dios, y Sostenes, mi colaborador, saludamos a la comun-idad cristiana que está en Corinto. A todos ustedes, a quienes Dios santificó en Cristo Jesús y que son su pueb-lo santo, así como a todos aquellos que en cualquier lu-gar invocan el nombre de Cristo Jesús, Señor nuestro y Señor de ellos, les deseo la gracia y la paz de parte de Dios, nuestro Padre, y de Cristo Jesús, el Señor.

(EVANGELIO) Este es el Cordero de Dios que quita el pecado del mundo Lectura del santo evangelio según san Juan 1, 29-34

En aquel tiempo, vio Juan el Bautista a Jesús, que venía hacia él, y exclamó: “Éste es el Cordero de Dios, el que quita el pecado del mundo. Éste es aquel de quien yo he dicho: ‘El que viene después de mí, tiene prece-dencia sobre mí, porque ya existía antes que yo’. Yo no lo conocía, pero he venido a bautizar con agua, para que él sea dado a conocer a Israel”.

Entonces Juan dio este testimonio: “Vi al Espíritu descender del cielo en forma de paloma y posarse sobre él. Yo no lo conocía, pero el que me envió a bautizar con agua me dijo: ‘Aquel sobre quien veas que baja y se posa el Espíritu Santo, ése es el que ha de bautizar con el Es-píritu Santo’. Pues bien, yo lo vi y doy testimonio de que éste es el Hijo de Dios”. Palabra del Señor. R. Gloria a ti, Señor Jesús.

El día que Jesús se presentó entre los pecadores para recibir un bautismo de penitencia de manos de Juan, mientras oraba “se abrió el cielo y el Espíritu Santo bajo sobre él en forma sensible como de una paloma”.

*Todos nosotros nacimos con la triste herencia del pecado origi-nal, y cuando recibimos el sacramento del Bautismo, quedamos libres de todo pecado y fuimos hechos “hijos en el Hijo”, y nuestro Padre también se complació en nosotros.

*Por eso se nos bautiza desde pequeños, porque la Iglesia quiere que gocemos de la gracia de Dios, que nos santifica y nos configura con Cristo, para poder integrarnos plenamente al Cuerpo Místico desde una edad temprana.

Cuando celebramos el Bautismo de Jesús, celebramos nuestro propio Bautismo.

Pequeñas reflexiones Dios interrumpe pero no abandona Continúa……….

“Por aquellos días, Jesús salió de Nazaret, que está en la región de Galilea, y Juan lo bautizó en el Jordán. En el momento de salir del agua, Jesús vio que el cielo se abría y que el Espíritu bajaba sobre él como una paloma. Y se oyó una voz del cielo, que decía: «Tú eres mi Hijo amado, a quien he elegido»”. (Marcos 1, 9-11).

¡Qué momento tan precioso! ¿No crees? Imagínate, Jesús sale del agua después de ser bautizado (en cámara lenta y con efectos especiales por favor) Sale con el pelo empapado de agua, luego el cielo se abre, una paloma de la nada aparece se posa sobre él y como si eso fuera poco Dios habla y declara que Jesús es su hijo amado. ¡WOW! ¡Increíble! Pero luego sucedió algo que nadie se imaginaba o esperaba. Los cabellos de Jesús no se habían secado aun cuando, “Enseguida el Espíritu lo im-pulsó a ir al desierto. Y estuvo en el desierto cuarenta días, siendo ten-tado por Satanás; y estaba entre las fi eras, y los ángeles le servían” (Marcos 1, 12-13).

Jesús no tenía idea de que le esperaba un desierto después de un momento tan precioso. Si Dios utilizó el desierto para preparar a Jesús, ¿qué crees que usará para prepararte a ti? Aunque no lo entiendas en estos momentos Dios usará esta temporada de interrupción para cortar y limpiar de tu vida lo que no está permitiendo el crecimiento que Él desea para ti. Dios usará este desierto para hacerte consciente de cosas que quizás no sabías de ti mismo y de las personas que te rodean. En mi vida personal Dios ha usado la interrupción para recordarme que Él siempre debe ser lo primero y lo más esencial en mi vida. La vida siempre vendrá acompañada de sus afanes, pero sin Dios nada podremos hacer o alcan-zar.

¿Cómo está tu relación con Dios? ¿Lo has puesto en segundo plano? Quiero aclarar que esto sucede muy lentamente y sin darnos cuenta. No es algo que hacemos intencionalmente, sino que poco a poco la vida con sus demandas nos van robando el tiempo de Dios. Nos van robando nuestro deseo de pasar tiempo con Él y reemplazamos ese tiempo con redes sociales, series de Netflix, y a lo mejor tu trabajo que demanda tanto de ti al punto de sentir que no tienes deseos o fuerzas para otra cosa. ¿Qué tal si Dios está llevándote al desierto no para herirte sino para enamorarte y conquistarte? ¿Qué tal si Dios conociendo tu corazón mejor que tú mismo se ha dado cuenta que estás herida o herido y que solo Él puede sanarte? ¿Qué tal si tus preocupaciones te han llevado a confiar más en tus fuerzas y olvidarte de su poder? Qué tal si este artícu-lo en este momento es lo que Dios está utilizando para decirte, ¡Hola! ¡Aquí estoy! Estoy pendiente de ti, tus preocupaciones, heridas, sueños y proyectos. Yo quiero lo mejor para ti, pero nada será posible si no te llevo primero al desierto y te conquisto de nuevo. ¡Déjate enamorar por Dios! ¡Déjate conquistar por Dios! No será quizás la cita que soñaste y esperaste, pero será la cita que siempre necesitaste y nunca lo sabías. Ya verás que en medio de ella Dios enviará sus ángeles para ayudarte y después de ella podrás alcanzar lo que jamás pensaste o imaginaste. Continuará……..
