editors that says that the first newspaper issue of the new year needs to include a “looking back/looking forward” section. Far be it for your Hollywood Gazette to not do the same. So much happened this year in our community, and there’s so much to come!

First, Hollywood has a brand new city manager. Dr. Ishmael officially took the reins in December. We reached out to readers to find out what they would like to see from the new city manager and he will respond in the next issue kicking off a monthly column addressing your concerns and highlighting initiatives in the new year.

The COSAC homeless shelter on Federal Highway will be demolished. While this is great news for many, others are understandably concerned with where the homeless will go in the shelter’s absence. A Florida man who was bedridden for more than two years received a second chance at life after doctors at Memorial Regional Hospital provided him with a left ventricular assist device and a chance to get on a heart-transplant wait list.

Ken had his first heart attack at age 29. In the years that followed, he suffered a stroke and a second heart attack. At age 52—after spending the past two and a half years bedridden—Ken was rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital in January, when his lungs filled up with fluid.

It was the beginning of a second chance at life.

“Luckily in January, we were able to meet (Enrique-Gongora-Md and Ioana-Dumitru-MD), and they said I would need an LVAD,” Ken says.

An LVAD, or left ventricular assist device, is a mechanical pump that is surgically placed inside the heart to keep blood flowing from the heart to the body, supplying blood to the vital organs, said Enrique Gongora, MD, Medical Director of the Adult Cardiac Surgical Transplant Program at Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute (MCVI).

Dr. Gongora surgically implanted two LVADs in Ken’s heart. When the first device implanted in February became occluded with a blood clot, he replaced it with a new LVAD in April.

“He gave me my life back,” says Ken. “The whole Memorial staff is unbelievable. I can’t thank them enough. The whole staff has been like family. The doctors have been so close, making sure you’re OK, putting their trips on hold for you, calling you and checking on you. It’s just amazing. All these years, in and out of hospitals, it’s been nothing like this.”

“When somebody pursues implantation of an LVAD, it’s done primarily for improving quality as well as quantity of life,” says Dr. Dumitru, who noted how well Ken is doing since his LVAD surgeries. “It has given him not only time back with the family-he goes out, he visits other patients and gives them hope about getting better.”

Five months after his first LVAD surgery, Ken had lost about 70 pounds.

“I enjoy going to rehab. I enjoy exercising. I enjoy getting stronger,” says Ken, recalling how different his life is today from the years he spent unable to get out of bed. “We’re able to go to some restaurants. We’re going to be able to see my son soon. It just keeps getting better and better every week.”

He also received some news.“Great news! I’m on the transplant list

for a new heart, because of the great work of the doctors, the nurses, the whole Memorial Hospital... and because of rehab,” Ken says. “It’s because of them. If it wasn’t for the LVAD, I wouldn’t be here.”

Memorial Regional Hospital earned in 2014 The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for its ventricular assist device (VAD) destination therapy program, offered through its Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute. Memorial Regional Hospital is the first hospital in Broward County to receive this accreditation and only one of two programs now serving the South Florida community.

In early 2014, the flagship hospital of

the Memorial Healthcare System underwent a rigorous two-day, on-site review and demonstrated full compliance with the Joint Commission’s national standards for disease specific care quality and safety, obtaining approval without receiving any recommendations for improvement.

Destination therapy VADs are implanted

in patients with refractory heart failure who are not eligible for a heart transplant. VADs have been proven to dramatically improve the long term survival and the quality of life of end stage heart failure patients, said Ioana Dumitru, MD, Medical Director of Adult Cardiac Transplant, Heart Failure and Cardiomyopathy at MCVI.

The full spectrum of services include heart transplant, ventricular assist device, electrophysiology, vascular surgery, congenital heart disease and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) to name a few – all components of a Total Heart Care program.

MUNICIPAL NEWS

Major road and infrastructure work is about to begin in Hollywood. Sections of State Road 7 / 441 will be under construction until 2018 but when the work is

complete, the area will be greatly improved.Beginning on January 5, 2015, work will take place

on State Road 7 from Southwest 25th Street to Fillmore Street. The work will include adding one through lane in each direction for a total of six lanes with left turn lanes separated by raised medians. There will be a new storm sewer system and retention ponds. And there will be new water and sewer lines.

Also, there will be the construction of bus bays at current bus stop locations and new curbs and gutters. There will be the addition or replacement of sidewalks with ADA compliant ramps on both sides of the road. There will be upgrades to existing signalized intersections with mast arms and the addition of pedestrian countdown timers at Pembroke Road, Washington Street and Hollywood Boulevard.

There will be the improvement of street lighting along the corridor by installing a new lighting system along the west side of State Road 7. There will be the addition of Intelligent Transportation System components including digital message signs and traffic monitoring cameras. And perhaps most importantly, the roadway will be resurfaced.

The cost will be $30,674,813 and the contractor will

be Marks Brothers, Inc. It will be complete in Spring 2018. Benefits will include increased capacity, better traffic flow, improved roadway drainage, safer pedestrian and transit features, a smoother roadway, safer turn lanes and improved visibility at night.

A second project along Fillmore Street to Stirling Road will begin in early 2015 and will be completed in Fall 2018. Much of the work will be similar to what is described above. There will be an upgrade of signalized intersections with mast arms and the addition of pedestrian countdown timers at Johnson Street, Taft Street and Sheridan Street. There will be new signalized intersection and pedestrian countdown timers at Fillmore Street.

The cost will be $29,568,100. The contractor will be Community Asphalt Corp.

Commissioner Richard Blattner is pleased that the upcoming projects are about to get underway. He believes the upgrades to the roadway are needed and that when

complete traffic will move better. He believes it will attract more business development and investment to State Road 7.

James Ford, design project manager believes the project is a long overdue and will definitely benefit the community. “This is a big project and it will mean a new roadway and many improvements,” he said.

During construction, there will be lane closures as work takes place, although State Road Seven will be open the entire time.

State Road 7 to undergo major improvements

The Hollywood Police Department has established a new “Neighborhood Intelligence”

initiative. This is in place at the Beach, East and West districts.

Police Department Crime Intelligence Analysts assist officers during investigations and provide them with any information of any crimes that are occurring, as well as identifying hot spots and problem areas within the city. The analysts research, analyze data, communicate with the Neighborhood Team Leaders and Patrol Officers.

They all work together with the goal of keeping the City safe.

Analysts are encouraging residents to speak up if they see suspicious activity or if they have information about a crime to report it anonymously to the Hollywood Police Department. Along with crime data, analysts would also like to integrate what Hollywood residents, business owners and visitors have to say, what they see and hear into their daily gathering of information. This “Neighborhood Intelligence” will in turn help to deploy resources, reduce crime and forecast crime in the future, according to Joann Hussey.

Residents are encouraged to email tips [email protected]. Another way for residents to anonymously report suspicious activity or other types of information that might assist in solving or preventing crimes is to email [email protected]. They can also call 954 764 HELP.

HOLIDAY NEWS

Zeina Zein has a real passion for helping others. She had worked with a local food bank and saw the faces of hungry people. Zein decided to start her own organization, Mobile School Pantry. It is based in Hollywood.

Zein and other volunteers, many of whom are part of her family, receive fruits and vegetables from Farmshare in Homestead and canned food and other food items from donors, some of whom provide financial support.

The Mobile School Pantry has been visiting Stirling Elementary School for the past year once a month and providing food to families who are facing financial struggles. In December, Mobile Food Pantry visited Orange Brook Elementary School and distributed food there.

The program is open to children and families at Stirling Elementary School and Orange Brook Elementary School. To receive food, families must have at least one child in the school. Students receive a

letter stating, “Mobile School Pantry is a free program that provides perishable and non-perishable nutritious foods for students and families in-need. Please carefully consider your family’s economic situation and determine if this program is something you need. If you are able to do without this assistance, please allow this program to be used by others.”

People who come to the food pantry can select any food item they want off of tables. The food pantry at Orange Brook Elementary School included very attractive vegetables, fruits, snack items and other food

products. “We have been feeding 20 to 30 families a month

at Stirling Elementary School and by coming to Orange Brook Elementary School, we can help more families,” said Zein. “I do this because I love to help others. We should all do more to help one another.”

Zein knows that many families are facing hard times because of low paying jobs or no jobs. She hopes the free food will help struggling parents have money available to provide their children a nice Christmas. She also wants to make sure that all children have enough to eat and is concerned that many children are food insecure. “If a child is hungry, he or she can’t focus on school work. It is important that no child is hungry,” said Zein.

Her brother Steve Zein volunteers with Mobile School Pantry. “I want to give back to the community.

Many people don’t earn enough money to buy eggs, bread or milk,” said Zein.

Zaida Prendes, the principal of Orange Brook Elementary School said she is impressed by the work Zein is doing in the community. “This food pantry is helping families. She is helping by bringing fresh vegetables, fruit and other food items,” said Prendes. “Many families are struggling to make ends meet.”

Mobile School Pantry is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization and depends on community support.

People who want to help children in Haiti and

have some fun will want to come to the Hollywood CARES event at the ArtsPark at Young Circle on January 11 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

There will be a concert in the park. There will be four bands including Locos Por Juana, Anna Palmerola, The Ryan Stone Band and The Done. There will be raffles and other fun activities. The event will be known as Hollywood Healing Haiti.

The money raised from this event will go to help support Project Papillon Orphanage & Community Youth Center in Port Au Prince, Haiti. Hollywood CARES has supported since this program since 2007. There are three homes that house about ten children each. One house is geared toward housing children who are struggling with HIV. The orphanage also has a school. Hollywood Cares also supports a youth center near the orphanage. Each year, Hollywood CARES provides about $25,000 worth of support to the orphanage and youth program in Haiti.

Hollywood CARES is run by members of Temple Beth El of Hollywood, a Reform Synagogue

and First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood.

“We will go to Haiti on January 19,” said Marilyn Faber. Her husband Rabbi Allan Tuffs is the Rabbi of Temple Beth El. “We will go with whoever chooses to go.”

There are 11 people planning to go on the trip from the synagogue and the church. Dr. Kenneth Budowsky, a pediatrician will be going on the trip.

Hollywood CARES donates money to the school and provides basic needs to the children there like shoes, tooth brushes, table clothes and other needs.

“This is really a labor of love for people to help others,” said Faber

Rabbi Tuffs said, “The nice thing about Hollywood CARES is we are more than a philanthropic organization, we have a personal relationship with the children who live there and the people who run the orphanage. We go every year and we get to know them and watch them grow up,” said Tuffs. “We are like family which gives Hollywood CARES a special quality.”

People who want to support Hollywood CARES should call 954 920 8225.

So you want to garden. A lot

of us do. Gardening is relaxing, gets you in touch with the earth, gives you delicious vegetables to eat, teaches you about plants, and has been shown to even help lower blood pressure. Talk about a win-win.

The problem, as it is all too often, is land. Most of us don't have enough of it. If you live in an apartment or condo, you might not have any at all. If you rent, your landlord might not let you dig up the back yard for those peppers or gourds you wanted to grow. We've been cut out -pruned, if you will, ripped out by the root- from having the freshest of the fresh.

Fear not, prospective gardener, the Hollywood community has a solution for you. Nestled between Dixie Highway and 24th ave on Adams Street, you'll find the Highland Gardens Neighborhood Community Garden. And if the organizers get their way, community gardens might find their way to Washington Park, Liberia, and Hollywood Gardens West. And no, I don't know why so many neighborhoods with "Gardens" in their names didn't already have, you know, gardens.

So what is a community garden, and how do you join? Simply put, it's an unused plot of land whose owner (in this case, the City of Hollywood) allows to be cultivated rather than go to waste. At this garden, each member has access to an 8 foot by 4 foot plot - more than enough for a few tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers. Or sweet potatoes, pineapples, cucumbers, onions, squashes. Even okra, if you like slimy little alien pods of goo in your food. All these are being grown in the garden. Each plot costs only $2 a year, and members can work their plots during daylight hours year-round. Kids are welcome to join, too, so long as their parents sign for them.

The garden is completely organic - no chemical pesticides or fertilizers of any kind allowed. Seeing as how it's probably not possible to bring a wheat thresher

down Dixie Highway, it's also gluten-free. And kosher. There's no fee to water the plots, since the city is picking up that tab. Seeds and plants are on you, though.

One of the best parts about community gardens is that they allow gardeners to learn and then take home the skills to start their own gardens.

The City has provided support from the beginning – they allowed the use of the land, cleared it, provide mulch, and supply the water. Patricia Asseff, Vice Mayor, would like to see it grow: “I love the garden and I think they could be more successful if they apply for grant money,” said Asseff.

As for adding more community gardens throughout the city, we’ll have to wait until the City finishes writing an official policy on community gardens. “The City is interested in having more gardens, it is just that at this time we want to have a policy in place before we move forward,” said Joann Hussey, spokesperson for Hollywood.

Like all the works of man, though, the Garden won’t last forever. The City has agreed to not only allow the garden to exist until a developer uses the land, but to allow the gardeners enough time to harvest their crop when the time comes.

But for now, crops are flourishing. “Today I saw a cucumber flower and a cilantro flower and a jalapeno flower and a squash flower and 6 different types of tomatoes,” said garden organizer Maria Jackson late December. “Three kinds of basil and Swiss chard and two types of lettuce, stevia, katuk, lots of milkweed seeds and pumpkin are growing everywhere.” Jackson encourages residents to come tour the gardens at 2316 Adams Street in Highland Gardens between the hours of 7am-9am any day.

For more information on joining or to set up a tour, call Maria Jackson at 786-357-2197.

Holly Montellanico received her award as

2014 Firefighter of the Year during a Hollywood Commission meeting.

A member of the Hollywood Fire Department for 9 and a half years, Montellanico loves her job and the opportunity to help others. And she is eager to help when off duty.

In November, while in Southwest Ranches, she saw an eight year old boy

being attacked by two Rottweiler dogs. She jumped a fence to get to the boy and fought off the two dogs. By taking this action, Montellanico saved the boy’s life. He was severely injured in the attack and required emergency care and extensive medical treatment. For this action, and exemplary service to the City of Hollywood, Montellanico was awarded Firefighter of the Year.

“I enjoy being a public servant. I love helping others and making a difference,” said Montellanico.

The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood has received a $15,000 Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). The Center will use the money to help support the two-week artist residency and exhibition of puppets, paintings, and illustrations by acclaimed Los Angeles-based artist Wayne White, organized by the Center’s Curator of Exhibitions Jane Hart. It is the first time in the Center’s history it has received a NEA project grant for a gallery exhibition. (The Center had previously received a $10,000 NEA Challenge America grant in 2007 for OceanDance.) The Center is one of three cultural organizations in Broward County and 27 in Florida to receive the Art Works grant. The NEA received 1,474 eligible applications under the Art Works category, requesting more than $75 million in funding. Of those applications, 919 were recommended for grants for a total of $26.6 million.

“We are pleased to be one of the beneficiaries of this NEA grant and the first arts organization in Florida to host a retrospective of works from three-time Emmy Award winning artist Wayne White, who was a previous participant in our Hot Topics Artist Series,” said Art and Culture

Center of Hollywood Executive Director Joy Satterlee. “During his residency, Wayne White will creatively engage the South Florida community as well as inspire select high school art students who will be fortunate enough to work alongside him in the creation of this mixed-media exhibition.”

NEA Chairman Jane Chu said, "I'm pleased to be able to share the news of our support through Art Works, including the award to the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood. The arts foster value, connection, creativity, and innovation for the American people, and these recommended grants demonstrate those attributes and affirm that the arts are part of our everyday lives."

White’s summer 2015 family friendly exhibition at the Center, titled Wayne White: Art is Supposed to Hypnotize You or Something, will be on display June 12 through Aug. 23, 2015. In conjunction with Broward 100 – the 100th anniversary of Broward County – White will create one of his iconic, supersized puppet heads, this time depicting county namesake Napoleon Bonaparte Broward (1857-1910), who governed Florida from 1905-1909 and initiated the drainage and channeling of the

Everglades to encourage development in the region. The puppet will replicate in style, size, and whimsical nature similar large-scale puppets created by White of country singer George Jones and former President Lyndon Johnson. Through an application process, the Center will pick five talented South Florida high school students to collaborate with White on the creation of the Napoleon Bonaparte Broward puppet and gallery installation. The public will also assist in the exhibition’s creation during a Community Day with White.

Opening weekend activities include a puppet parade in downtown Hollywood led

by Wayne White, a reception with the artist, and a talk. During summer 2015, there will also be a screening of White’s acclaimed film, “Beauty is Embarrassing.”

Art Works grants support the creation of art, public engagement with art, lifelong learning in the arts, and enhancement of the livability of communities through the arts. For a complete listing of projects recommended for Art Works grant support, please visit the NEA website at arts.gov. Follow the conversation about this and other NEA-funded projects on Twitter at #NEAFall2014.

Broward County Park Finder interactive

map launches Jan. 1

Lyft and Uber drivers could face arrest in Broward

Broward County Parks and Recreation Division released the Broward County Park Finder Interactive GIS Map on January 1, 2015.

The Web-based map will be a “one-stop shop” to find memorable recreational, environmental, and educational experiences at city, county, and state park facilities throughout Broward County. The Broward County Park Finder can provide information on park locations, activities, and amenities, as well as driving directions for users to the park of their choice.

“My fellow parks and recreation directors and I have wanted a system like this for a long time,” says Broward County Parks Director Dan West. “This allows us to help our public find a facility based on their specific needs, whether it’s in a state, county, or city park. It also meshes perfectly with the Broward County Commission’s goal of working closely with our community partners to provide quality recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike.”

Park Finder users can search for a park using an

address, park name, or GPS location (GPS-capable device required), or by one of 60 amenities listed on the map that can be found in parks throughout the county.

Once a park location is selected, users can receive driving directions to the park, share a map of the park location using Facebook, Twitter, or email, and view a photo gallery of the park.

The Park Finder currently features information on all city parks throughout Broward County, such as park addresses and acreage. From dog parks to airboat rides, amphitheaters to soccer fields, the Park Finder can find the perfect park for citizens and visitors in Broward County.

The map is both desktop and mobile device compatible and can be accessed using Microsoft Internet Explorer 7/8/9/10, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Apple Safari Web browsers.

For further information or to access the map, visit http://gis.broward.org/browardparksfinder/.

Drivers who have medical conditions may soon have another way to

inform emergency responders of their condition.

The Broward County Commission is considering implementing the Yellow Dot Critical Motorist Medical Information Program, aka the Yellow Dot Program. It was brought before the Commission by Vice Mayor Martin Kiar.

The Yellow Dot Program is a nationwide initiative designed to provide volunteer participants with a yellow dot sticker to be placed in the rear window of their vehicles. The sticker informs emergency medical responders that additional, critical medical information about the motorist may be found

in a yellow folder inside the vehicle's glove compartment. The yellow folder is to

include the injured motorist’s emergency contact and medical information. The program is free and voluntary.

“The first hours after an accident or other medical emergencies are critical.

The Yellow Dot Program helps provide emergency responders with information

that could potentially be life saving,” said Vice Mayor Kiar. "Our program will be tailored

to meet the needs of Broward County residents."Commissioners directed the County Attorney to

draft an ordinance for implementation of the program. Counties adopting the program are required to develop guidelines and procedures to ensure that any information that is confidential is not made public through the program.

The Broward County Commission recently approved a grant that will help in the neutering and spaying of free roaming catsin hopes of reducing stray cats in Hollywood and surrounding communities.

The Animal Care and Adoption Division (ACAD) received a $25,000 grant from Florida Animal Friend to fund the trap, neutering and release of cats within the zip codes of 33023, 33024 and 33025. A section of Hollywood is included in this program. It is believed that about 500 free-roaming cats will be spayed or neutered through this grant. The ACAD will monitor stray cat intake from these three zip codes to evaluate the impact of the trap, neuter and release program on reducing the number of unsterilized cats in these areas.

An earlier $25,000 grant from Florida Animal Friend resulted in 500 cats being spayed or neutered last year. The ACAD has been working with Florida Animal Friend on the trap, neuter and release program since August 2012.

December’s Party With A Purpose raised more than just the roof at Whiskey Tango in Downtown Hollywood. Over $1,200 was collected for Friends of the Broward Homeless. Just another example of how effective people can be when they get together for a good cause - and a good time. Join the fun on January 13th at La Hauca from 5:30 - 7:30p and help benefit the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood. We’ll see you there!

MUNICIPAL NEWS

Hollywood wants to redevelop its

downtown section. And to encourage this redevelopment, the City is focusing on an area known as the Regional Activity Center (RAC) Land Use.

RACs are intended to encourage attractive and functional mixed living, working, shopping, education and recreational activities, in areas of regional importance. The RAC Land Use is intended to encourage development or redevelopment of areas that are of regional significance. It is intended to facilitate mixed-use development, encourage mass transit, reduce the need for cars, provide incentives for quality development and give definition to urban form.

In 2009 the City of Hollywood adopted the Downtown Master Plan. The goals of the Master Plan include the promotion of the Downtown area to create a sustainable urban district, the establishment of character districts and the strengthening of connectivity and mobility. There is a need to identify development opportunities and the creation of zoning recommendations to reinforce district character and protect residential neighborhoods.

One of the biggest drivers for the concepts in the Master Plan was the RAC. In order to attract the right kind of development, the right regulatory framework needs to be in place. The purpose of the RAC is to provide

that framework. The RAC is a high intensity, high density multi-use area designed as appropriate for growth by the local government or jurisdiction.

While the RAC provides the adequate land use framework for the vision, the existing Zoning, does not. To address these issues the Master Plan proposed eight character districts. The purpose of these districts is to build upon the existing character and assets; while setting up the framework for the desired development. Based on these districts, zoning recommendations were created. These focused on not only creating a cohesive, visually more attractive, more pedestrian friendly urban environment; but also placed strong emphasis on providing adequate transitions to protect the adjacent residential uses. All eight of these districts were studied in detail during the second phase of the Master Plan and zoning recommendations were created; In two of the districts, the recommendations were transformed into zoning regulations and adopted in 2009--the North Downtown and the Young Circle Districts.

The Community and Economic Department and the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) are now in the public outreach phase to neighborhood associations in the RAC and adjacent to the RAC to review recommendations for the other six districts and to gain their input. In the Spring of 2015 recommendations will be brought forth to the City Commission for review, according to Joann Hussey, spokesperson for Hollywood.

Dr. Ishmael begins his role as Hollywood City Manager

Dr. Wazir Ishmael is excited about his new position as Hollywood City Manager. He believes in the City and what it has to offer residents and businesses. He had served as Deputy City Manager of Miramar and Hollywood assistant city manager but received a unanimous vote to be the city manager at a recent commission meeting.

“I want to move the City of Hollywood forward,” said Ishmael. “We have a strong community and a strong business sector. And we have a lot to offer businesses in Hollywood and businesses that would consider locating to the City. We have an airport and a seaport and we have a beach.”

Ishmael is new to his position and wants to get input from members of the City Commission on what their priorities are. He wants to determine the three most important priorities that members of the commission have.

Ishmael would like to see further development of the City. He wants to continue efforts to develop the downtown section and the beach area and he wants to see more development in the western portion of Hollywood. He want to establish a strong partnership between the city and

business leaders.“We have a lot to offer. We're in

a great location. We have a diverse population, a stable infrastructure and we have great beaches,” said Ishmael.

He hopes to see the development of more technology oriented businesses, marine industry and aviation. And he wants to retain older businesses in Hollywood. He believes that getting a group of innovative businesses together will be good for the City. Ishmael is also

hoping to see further development of the arts community. He is pleased with plans to make Hollywood an arts center.

During the commission meeting where he was named the new city manager, Ishmael said he was humbled to be given such an opportunity and promised to serve with integrity and passion and would ensure that the government would be run with full transparency.

Ishmael has the strong support of the Hollywood Commission. During the meeting, Commissioner Traci Callari said she believes Ishmael has the vision to move the City forward.

Mayor Peter Bober said the commission has been divided and that the new city manager might bring the commission together.

Commission Patricia Asseff said she believes Hollywood has strong momentum and Ishmael will lead the city well.

Hollywood Commissioner Kevin Biederman brings in the new year as Vice Mayor replacing Commissioner Patricia Asseff who will continue serving as a Hollywood commissioner.

My brainchild, ‘Party with a Purpose’ will be held in new venues throughout Downtown Hollywood but the purpose remains the same since 2007 -- to raise much needed funds and awareness to non-profits directly serving your community. This year brings new leadership from the Downtown Hollywood Business Association to organize the events, and I am grateful to all who are contributing their time and expertise to make these happen. The next one is set for Jan. 13 and all are welcome. See page ___ for details.

Broward County Transit agreed to spend $44.3 million to purchase 180 buses that will be delivered this year increasing options and access for Hollywood residents who rely on public transit. Speaking of transit, if you’re looking to try the car share services of Uber or Lyft, you will have to wait. The drivers of cars working with Uber

and Lyft can now face arrest and the impounding of their cars if they operate in Broward as they have been.

Finally, after much deliberation, we have phased out the annual Best of Hollywood competition and in it’s place launched the “Celebrate Community” feature encouraging readers to submit photos and stories to honor their neighbors, public servants, volunteers and excellent customer service. If you have a story about someone making a difference in Hollywood from your postal carrier to your favorite waitress, submit it online from our web site (hollywoodgazette.com >>top menu >> celebrate community.)

On a personal note I have a new last name, a new fiancée and have started a new publication in Wynwood focusing on the arts, all of which will keep me pretty busy in this new year.

One thing that will remain the same is that we will continue to cover your community news and bring focus on the stories that are vital to Hollywood.

We love to hear from you. Do you have a story you think we should cover? Email it to [email protected]

And if you’re not getting our weekly newsletter, just text GAZETTE to 42828 to keep up with everything Hollywood.

Wishing you good health and much success in 2015 and thank you for reading Hollywood Gazette.

The McArthur High School boys basketball team is doing very well early in the season. The team has a winning record and is ranked as the best Class 8A basketball team in Florida. The team has played well in the Kreul Classic basketball tournament.

Head Coach Warren Gale believes the McArthur basketball team could win a

state championship if the team continues to play this well. Top players include Derric Jean, a guard who has received a basketball scholarship to Louisiana Tech University. He averages 14 points a game. Corey Brown, a forward, has received a basketball scholarship to Northern Arizona University and averages 10 points a game. Gariel Lalanne is on a mission. She wants

to bring school spirit to South Broward High School.

As president of the South Broward Student Government Association (SGA), she works hard to generate enthusiasm for the school among students.

“We do spirit events at lunch time. We will have games like musical chairs and have other events during the year,” said Lalanne.

Lalanne was among a group of SGA students who attended a presentation by Lt. Colonel Leo Gray, a member of the Tuskegee Airmen World War II fighter pilots. He was one of the first African-American military aviators in the United States armed forces, having served with the 100th Squadron of the 332nd Fighter Group.

The presentation took place during a meeting of the Broward County Association of Student Councils (BCASC).

The South Broward SGA recently held a fun run around the perimeter of the school to raise money to send a military veteran to visit the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.

“We believe it is important to honor our veterans,” said Lalanne.

Gray spoke to the students about his experiences flying combat missions over Germany during World War II. He discussed some of the accomplishments of the Tuskegee Airmen. He also shared experiences of dealing with segregation. After the war, Gray went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts and master’s degree from the University of Nebraska. And he continued serving in

the U.S. Air Force.Last year, as part of the South

Florida Honor Flight Mission, middle and high schools raised approximately $30,000 to send 43 World War II and Korean War veterans to visit the National World War II Memorial in Washington, DC. This year’s goal is to raise enough money to send at least 112 veterans to Washington, DC in the Spring Honor Flight leaving from Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport in May 2015. Students will also prepare items for the trip, as well as a special homecoming parade and celebration when the veterans return.

Members of the McArthur High SGA are also raising money to send World War II and Korean War military veterans to visit the National World War II Memorial in Washington D.C.

“We are having a kick ball tournament that any student regardless of athletic ability can participate in raise money. The entry fee is $25,” said Anthony Vazconez, of the McArthur SGA. “We want to honor these veterans. Many of them are dying. In a few years, this project will be over.”

The McArthur SGA is also collecting money for the Honor Flights by going to classrooms and asking students to donate change.

Members of the McArthur SGA are proud of their recent Harvest Drive campaign. The goal was to provide food to lower income families in the community. “This was a way for us to help families in need,” said Marine Schreiber, a McArthur SGA member.

“We are especially proud of our students for providing a gift of thanks and gratitude to our veterans for their sacrifices, and for raising awareness of the Honor Flight,” said Superintendent Robert W. Runcie. “We are honored to support their efforts.”
