BLOG BY ALUMNI
Our esteemed alumni Ms. Mandeep Kaur (07-09) shares her blog
with us that was featured on momspresso.com about the
effect of mobile phones on a child’s communication skills.
In this digital era when we are moving towards the development
and growth, our coming generation is losing focus from the very
tender age. We as a parent often make this mistake of giving mobile
phones to kids so that they sit quietly and don’t bother us but in
the form of mobile phones we are giving them poison which is going
to affect their communication skills and parents are not aware of
the importance of communication skills in child’s overall
development.
There are four major parts of communication skills in child’s
life
Listening Skills: The first and the foremost communication skill
that we learn in our lives is Listening skills. When the child is
in
mother’s womb he/she responds based on what he or she listens
and not to forget
he also recognise you as a parent based on your voice. But when
the same child
grows up we handover the phone to him and active listening
becomes just listening
and not responding.
So, my advice is stop giving phone to your child and start
brushing up their listening skills by narrating stories and then
asking questions at the end. Speaking Skills: If your child is only
engrossed in phone and not going out to
play with others how will he develop
speaking skills if his interaction is limited
with the outer world. One practice that I follow is whenever I
go to grocery shop or
medical shop, I tell my son to check with the shopkeeper if the
things we are
looking for is available, so by doing this I am exposing him to
the other side of the
world. So, take away the phone and take your
child out to play. Writing skills: You must be wondering how
writing relates to mobile phones so let me tell you when your child
start learning writing skills he or she needs to have a proper
listening skill so that he can understand what teacher is trying to
tell and your child need to focus to master the skills. As
mentioned earlier mobile phones
affect your child’s attentiveness hence affects everything
related to it.
Reading Skills: If our child is on the phone most of the time
then how will she be
able to develop the habit of reading. So, if your child is a
teenager get them some
good motivational books which has less than 100 pages and ask
them to read every day at least for 30 minutes, keep of target of 7
days to complete a book. Reading habit will improve your
child’s
hold over language, it will improve his/her Vocabulary and
motivational books will have a positive influence on his/her
Personality. If the child is Below 10 then
you read out story books in front of them and explain the
meaning this will inculcate the habit of reading in your child.
As a parent it is important for us to
nurture our child’s communication skills so that they express
themselves fearlessly,
looking at today’s society it has become need of an hour and it
also boost their self
-esteem and confidence. Let’s take an
oath to help our child develop these skills and then watch them
succeed in life.
