Since ancient times, Italy has remained one of the leading political and religious centers of Western civilization. Its capital of Rome was the hub of the Roman Empire and the heart of the beginning of Christianity. Italian culture thrived producing scholars and artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo, and Michelangelo. Italy joined the International Association of Lions Clubs in 1951 and its oldest club is the Milan Host Lions Club.
