Dear Lehigh Lightning Family, Wow…we are already half way through the year! We have so much to be proud of at LSHS! Our students have worked really hard to make amazing progress academically first semester. Below you will find totals for Renaissance Cards that were handed out to our Lehigh Scholars 1st Quarter! To earn a Renaissance Card you cannot have more than three tardies to class or any referrals. Our Renaissance Card holders receive many benefits and rewards for their academic and behavioral achievement! Congrats Lehigh Scholars! Many students have also been very actively engaged in school performances, clubs and sports. Our “All Center Holiday Show” had standing room only in the auditorium with over 300 student performers! Thank you to the talented teachers and students that worked so hard to put this wonderful performance together! As we move into the second semester, we need to stay even more focused. Academics are TOP PRIORITY at Lehigh Senior High School. Please monitor academic progress daily/weekly in FOCUS. We are providing academic tutoring in all core academic areas on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s after school for FREE. Cambridge Study Tables are on Wednesdays after school. If you notice a decline in a specific area or you know that your son or daughter needs additional assistance, please make sure they attend. Please also feel free to call our guidance office to schedule a conference to meet with your son or daughters teachers and a guidance counselor to develop an action plan for progress if needed. It is very important that we work together to keep students on track for success! Enclosed is an article on “School Attendance”. Please take the time to read over it. We need to work together to make sure that your student is on time and at school daily. Please also be aware of the attendance/tardy policy that is in place. If a student misses more than 10 days from class their credit can be denied without proper medical or legal documentation on file for that semester. Three tardies also count as one absence. Attendance has a HUGE impact on academic success! Second semester we will be introducing the “Lehigh Scholars Success Plan”. It is enclosed in this newsletter, please make sure you review it thoroughly. We are having on average 100 students late to school each day and 100 students signed out each day. This is detrimental to student success. Parents please make every effort to get your student to school on time and schedule appointments after 1:35. Seat time in class is critical for academic success. This new plan is being implemented in an effort to keep students on track. Please be aware students will lose privileges by being placed on the “Grounded List”, if they don’t come to school, don’t get to class on time and don’t behave in class. Parents we are in this together and we really want your student to be successful, please help us make every effort to help your student succeed. If you have any questions or we can assist in any way, please call your grade level administrator. Grade Level Administrators: 9 th /Veronica Young, 10 th /Kelly Britton, 11 th /Peggy Slichter, 12 th /Tim Krevinko. SENIORS… I encourage you to step up your game. Make sure you are making the “grade”, applying to schools and charting your path. We are receiving many acceptance letters!!! Please make sure you share them with your guidance counselor and while you’re there check out scholarship opportunities. You are the master of your own destiny…make it happen!!! Visual Arts Five Lehigh Senior Painting 2 students are participating in a global art event called the Memory Project.

The Memory Project is a charitable nonprofit organization that invites art teachers, art students, and solo artists to help cultivate global kindness by creating portraits for children around the world who have faced substantial challenges, such as violence, war, extreme poverty, neglect, and loss of parents. Our participants create these portraits to help children feel valued and important, to know that many people care about their well-being, and to provide a special childhood memory in the future. Since 2004 the organization has created more than 130,000 portraits for children in 47 countries. Abi Del Pozo, Redgine Michel, Alyssa Canciani, Zahria Nelson and Bran Uriostegui are making a difference in those childrens lives by creating a memory that they can keep forever.

Visual Arts students had the privilege to visit the Rausenberg Residency on Captiva and meet 5 artists in action in November. Students got a tour of the late artist Robert Rausenburg home and art studio. They were also able to observe and speak with the many artist who work at the center. What an informative and exciting trip!

The Visual Arts students are busy creating work for Art Under 20, a high school competition that takes place at Art Fest each year. We also sponsor a Chalk Block where the students get to work with a professional artist.

We have been temporarily moved from the gallery space to the front lobby during construction. Show will be in the front lobby for all to see. The entire Visual Arts department is working to create an Installation. The theme is faces. Look for it in January.

National Arts Honor Society, a club sponsored by National Art Education Association just complete a service project for Ms. Vanesse Williams who asked us to paint a wall of bookshelves to use in her School Law class. Students were very create with this project. Throughout the school year, NAHS works on many different service projects. We are currently working on the Lee County Fair display. The theme for this year is “We have a Good Thing Growing”.

Congratulations, to the following 25 students who were selected to represent the Lehigh Senior Teacher Academy Program and the FFEA Chapter for Lee County School District at the Florida Future Educators of America State Conference in Orlando.

The state conference provides a fantastic opportunity for chapter members to meet with fellow students, chapter advisors, and new and experienced teachers. The conference also provides an opportunity to hear from outstanding teachers and others working in the field of education as they present a shared vision of excellence in future classrooms. The workshops they will attend will provide valuable information, ideas, and inspiration that will guide them as they work toward becoming a teacher.

The Impact of Tardiness on SchoolSchools stress the need for students to get to school and class on

time and with good reason. Studies conducted by the U.S. Department of Education on truancy, which is connected with tardiness, show that school attendance is a major factor when it comes to school success and student behavior.

Problems with Tardiness:The most crucial learning hours of a school day are the morning

hours, because they are when students are most attentive. Students who are tardy miss the beginning of their morning classes, and they also cause a distraction when arriving late.

Academics and Achievement:Students who are frequently tardy have lower GPA’s, lower scores on

standardized assessments, and lower graduation rates. Chronic tardiness in elementary and middle school is also linked to failure in high school.

Behavior Problems:In the National Center for Education Statistics Indicators of School

Crime and Safety, teachers surveyed reported that students who are frequently tardy have higher rates of suspension and other disciplinary measures. Tardiness causes students to feel disconnected with school, leading to behavior problems and dropouts. Students who are frequently tardy to school are also more apt to be fired from a job for showing up late.

Effect on Others:When students are tardy, they negatively impact their teachers and

other students. Teachers are often required to allow tardy students to make up work, which often requires them to restructure their lessons or reteach missed material. Tardiness also takes other students’ attention away from a teacher’s lesson, leading to more behavior problems and missed instruction.

Early Sign-outs Can Send the Same Message:Although it may not seem like a big issue to sign your student out early

to avoid the pick-up line, it causes a disruption in the busy afternoon office, interrupts the child’s classroom, takes away from the flow of your child’s day, and it unfair to other parents who follow procedures.References: national Center for Education Statistics: Indicators of School Safety Report: US Department of Education Truancy Report: US Department of Education: Manual to Combat Truancy.
