Tidbits takes a look at what other occasions are celebrated during the eleventh month of the year. November is National Peanut Butter Lovers Month. The average American eats three pounds of peanut butter every year, which adds up to about 700 million pounds, enough to cover the floor of the Grand Canyon. There are about 50,000 peanut farms across the nation, found in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Texas and Virginia. Just one acre of peanuts produces about 30,000 peanut butter sandwiches. But they’re not for everyone — About 1 percent of the U.S. population is severely al- lergic to peanuts! And did you know that peanuts aren’t really nuts at all? They’re legumes, just like beans, peas and lentils. • The Japanese celebrate the Shichi-go-san festival on November 15, when they honor their daughters aged three and seven and their sons aged three and five. Shi- chi-go-san literally translates “Seven-Five-Three, ages that are considered critical in a child’s life. • November is a big month for Independence Day cel- ebrations, including Poland on November 11, Latvia on the 18 th , Lebanon on the 22 nd , Suriname on the 25 th and Albania on November 28.

CELEBRATIONS (continued):• Americans used to celebrate Armistice Day on November 11, commemorating the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. This was the time when a peace agreement was declared between the Allies and Germany, ending World War I, then called the Great War. It became a U.S. federal holiday in 1938. President Eisenhower of-ficially changed the holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day in 1954. There are about 9.2 million veterans in the United States over age 65. About 1.9 million are under 35. • Veterans Day in Canada, Britain, France and Australia also memorializes their heroes on or near November 11. Canada calls it Remembrance Day, and the second Sunday of November in Britain is called Remembrance Sunday. • The third Thursday in November has been pro-claimed the Great American Smokeout, when all smokers have been asked to make a plan to quit or at the least, abstain from smoking on that day. It’s the day the American Cancer Society reminds smokers that cigarette smoking is responsible for over 80 percent of all lung cancer deaths. Just 20 minutes after quitting, the heart rate and blood pressure drop. Twelve hours later, the blood’s car-bon monoxide level drops to normal. One year af-ter quitting, the excess risk of coronary heart dis-ease is half that of a continuing smoker, and 10 years after quitting, the risk of dying from lung cancer is half that of a continuing smoker. • Musicians, singers and poets pay homage to their patron saint, St. Cecilia, on November 22. This Roman Christian martyr is said to have heard the music of heaven during her wedding ceremony and to have sung to God as she lay dying. The pa-troness of business and professional women is St. Hilda, who is honored on November 17. • Everyone seems to have a patron saint, including tavern owners, beggars and drunkards. This honor belongs to St. Martinmas, a noted philanthropist who supposedly hid in a barn to avoid being made a bishop. Because a honking goose gave away his location, many Europeans eat roast goose during the Feast of St. Martinmas on November 11. • Is matrimony on your mind? According to an old proverb, “Marry in September’s shine, your living will be rich and fine.” However, “If in October you do marry, love will come, but riches tarry.” Now, “If you wed in bleak November, only joys will come, remember.”

• Thanks to Alfred Gerald Caplin we have Sadie Hawkins Day on November 15. Alfred was more commonly known as Al Capp, the creator of the “L’il Abner” comic strip. In 1937, Capp pictured November 15 as a day when the unmarried women

What Is Zoonosis and Why You Should Care?Zoonosis refers to a parasite or other disease, like rabies, that can be passed from animals to humans. Members of your family can unknowingly pick up a zoonotic disease at the park, on a sidewalk, or even in their own backyard. Children are especially vulnerable to zoonotic disease, mostly because children play outside and sometimes have a tendency to put objects in their mouths.

Cat Specialist takes parasites and zoonotic disease transmission very seriously. We STRONGLY recommend annual parasite testing and a monthly prevention program. Please call our hospital to learn more how we can protect your family and cat from zoonotic diseases.

of the fictional community of Dogpatch could ag-gressively go after the town’s available bachelors. Dogpatch’s Sadie Hawkins was dubbed “the homeli-est gal in the hills,” waiting interminably for men to “come a-courtin’.” Her father, a community leader, decreed the first annual celebration in the comic strip, and it soon became a popular event across the coun-try.• November 5 is celebrated in England as Guy Fawkes Day, commemorating the anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot, a conspiracy to blow up Parlia-ment and King James I along with it. The plot was an uprising of English Catholics, who believed they were being persecuted unjustly for practicing their religion. Thirty-six barrels of gunpowder were hid-den in a cellar under the House of Lords and guarded by Fawkes. Thirteen conspirators devised the plot, and many were killed outright, while others were imprisoned or executed. Fawkes was sentenced to be hanged but jumped off the scaffold and broke his neck. While this doesn’t appear to have been a good idea, it saved him the agony of the drawing and quar-tering that was to follow the noose breaking his neck. Today, the English celebrate with fireworks and bon-fires, with Guy Fawkes’ effigy burned on the fire. • The day after Thanksgiving has been nicknamed Black Friday in the United States and marks the be-ginning of the Christmas shopping season. If it’s one of retailers’ best days, why do they call it Black Friday? It earned this moniker as it is the day many retailers make a profit and are “in the black.” “Buy Nothing Day” is the same day and is a day of protest by some against consumerism and overspending. A Canadian artist conceived the idea and initiated it in Vancouver in 1992. Festivities often include sit-ins with credit card cut-up ceremonies. Some areas use the day to hold a winter coat exchange for the less fortunate. • Don’t forget Sinkie Day on November 24. That’s the day set forth for recognition by The International Association of People Who Dine over the Kitchen Sink, those folks who think food tastes better eaten over the sink and that it makes less mess as well!

Douglas County—If your home has expired from the MLS and hasn’t sold, don’t be discouraged. The reason your home did not sell may have nothing to do with your home or the market. In reality, your home may have been one of the more desirable properties for sale.

So Why Didn’t Your Home Sell? Last year more than half the Douglas County listed homes didn’t sell. Don’t risk making the wrong choices and losing both time and money on your investment. Many sellers found that there was a tremendous amount of information they needed in order to get their home sold quickly and for top dollar, in the shortest amount of time.

What if you could gain access a secret Guaranteed Sale Program, eliminating the dilemma of home that just won’t sell.

Morganite

Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. For more information on gemstones or jewelry of any kind call 303.841.2666

Need a little peace, love and joy? Try mor-ganite! Morganite was first classified with the color-ful group of the beryls. Then in 1911, upon the suggestion of New York gemologist G. F. Kunz, the pink variety of beryl was named in honor of banker and mineral collector John Pierpont Morgan – thus, morganite. Why? Probably because JP Morgan had become one of America's most important collectors of gems and had assembled the most important gem collection in the U.S. consiting of over 1000 pieces. Morganite features a pink tone that radiates charm, vivacity and tenderness that the colorless beryl does not have. So, if you’re still shopping for that perfect gift – a piece of morganite gemstone jewelry might be precisely what you need. For sure, it will enchant the wearer and endear her to you forever! Some say the very site of morganite puts you in a good mood even when times are tough. Sounds like the perfect gemstone for today’s stress-filled world. We could all use a little peace, a little love, and a little joy!

CELEBRITY EXTRABy Cindy Elavsky

Q: I am loving the new fall season so far -- lots of good shows and only a few stinkers in the bunch. Which shows are you digging so far? -- Clyde R., via e-mailA: In the drama category, far and away my favorite show has to be ABC’s “Revenge,” which has injected a much-needed shot of campy, soapy, sexy drama into my Wednesday nights. (If you are on Twitter, you can follow my live-tweeting feeds at twitter.com/celeb-rity_extra every Wednesday starting at 10 p.m. ET, where all of us “Revenge” fans whoop and holler together.) I haven’t had this much fun watching a nighttime drama -- nor have I talked to the TV screen so much -- since “Melrose Place.”On the comedy side, it’s a tie between Zooey De-schanel’s “New Girl” on Fox and ABC’s “Suburgato-ry,” whose ensemble cast of Jeremy Sisto, Jane Levy, Cheryl Hines, Alan Tudyk and Ana Gasteyer has me wiping tears of laughter from my face every episode.***Q: I love watching “The Talk” every afternoon. What happened to two of the original hostesses, Holly Robinson Peete and Leah Remini? -- Joanne M., Fairport, N.Y.A: Holly’s and Leah’s contracts were not renewed by CBS after the first season. As of Sept. 6 and Oct. 23, respectively, CBS officially replaced them with Sheryl Underwood and Aisha Tyler.***Q: I really like “Prime Suspect,” especially the actor who plays Detective Blando. Can you tell me a little about him? He looks so familiar. -- Gennifer F., Al-lentown, Pa.A: Tim Griffin, 42, has starred and guest-starred in countless TV series and big-screen movies, includ-ing “Party of Five,” “Charmed,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Bourne Supremacy,” “24,” “Iron Man,” “The Men Who Stare at Goats,” and most recently, “Super 8” and “Abduction.”I spoke with Tim about his role in the American ver-sion of the British cop drama and asked if he had any qualms about trying to “remake” such a popular series. Tim told me: “It wasn’t really until we started doing the initial press work that I realized, ‘OK, this is a sacred institution,’ because I was a huge fan of the British series too. It’s almost like a trial by fire that you have to go through. Can it be envisioned, reimagined with an American voice?“Our partners are the original producers of the origi-nal ÔPrime Suspect,’ Tim said. “So we have that en-tire cannon of scripts at our disposal, and we have Peter Berg as the executive producer and director. It’s like its own new animal.”***Q: I read somewhere that James Van Der Beek’s wife recently had another baby. Didn’t they just have a daughter? -- Barb D., via e-mailA: You are halfway correct, Barb. James and wife Kimberly have a daughter, Olivia, who recently turned 1, and are expecting their second child next year. James tweeted: “Just when we thought we couldn’t feel any more blessed, it seems the universe has plans to give our daughter a sibling.”

Is buying now cheaper than renting?Does it make more sense to buy a home rather than rent one? Here are the latest facts:

According to a national real estate website’s data, it is now less expensive to own a home than to rent one in 72% of U.S. cities.

This percentage will likely increase because analysts feel rental costs are about to explode. The demand for rentals has increased with the economic downturn, while the supply of rentals has quickly dropped. In this scenario, the only place for prices to go is UP!

Even though home prices could still soften in some markets, the cost of owning a home may increase. This is because mortgages may soon get more expensive. Researchers with the Mortgage Bankers Association expect mortgage rates to rise the last three months of this year and continue to increase gradually through 2012.

For most folks, it makes utmost sense to buy a home at a dis-counted price and secure a 30-year mortgage at an historically low fixed interest rate. This lets you set your housing expense for the next thirty years--while rents keep heading skyward.

If you have any questions about your home financing or refinancing situation, please feel free to call or email. We’re always glad to help.... Have a great day!

When Investing, "Face to Face" Beats Fingers

on a Keyboard These days, you can purchase just about anything you want on the In-ternet. However, you can still bene-fit from a human, face-to-face expe-rience for some purchases — such as your investments. And that’s why

you may want to work with a financial professional.

Unlike a computer interface, a financial professional will take the time to truly know your situation today — and then help you make adjustments tomorrow. Let’s first look at two key areas a financial professional will consider today:

Your risk tolerance — By asking the right questions, a financial professional can help you determine if you’re a moderate, conservative or aggressive investor and then recommend those investments that are suitable for your risk tolerance.Your time horizon — If you’re saving for a down payment on a new home you expect to purchase within two or three years, you may want an investment that offers significant preservation of principal. But if you’re saving for retire-ment, and you’re three decades away from it, you’ll likely need investments that offer the potential for growth. Your financial advisor can help you choose the mix of short- and long-term investments that can help you make progress to-ward all your goals. Now, let’s look at the types of milestones that a financial professional can help you with as your life progresses:

New child — When you bring a new child into your life, you also add new responsibilities. Do you have sufficient life insurance? Do you plan on helping the child pay for college? If so, what college funding vehicles should you consider? A financial professional can help you answer these questions.New spouse — Whether you’re getting married for the first time, or you’re remarrying, you’ll have to reconcile your financial picture with that of your new spouse. A financial professional can review both your situations and possibly recommend ways for you to reduce debt, eliminate redun-dancies in your investment portfolios and consolidate in-surance coverage.Career change — When you change jobs, you may have to make many investment-related decisions: Should you move the assets from your old employer’s 401(k) to an IRA? Or should you roll over your old 401(k) to your new employer’s plan, if a rollover is allowed? Knowing your options when you leave your job can help you make the right choice for your retirement savings. A qualified finan-cial professional can help you review and understand your rollover options.Retirement — Once you retire, you’ll have several issues to consider: How much can you withdraw from your in-vestments each year? From which accounts? Should you rebalance your portfolio to provide more potential sources of income? What about the transfer of your wealth? A fi-nancial professional who is familiar with your situation can help you make the right moves to enjoy the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned. So, when you really want to invest, leave the “virtual” world behind and connect with a financial professional — someone who has gained insight into your individual needs and who has the experience and expertise to help you build, maintain and adjust a portfolio that can help you move toward your goals.

Do You Tithe?Because of THE BLESSING on our life, Christians are

empowered to increase and to become greater in all we do. It is the power to become greater in your spirit, in your body, and in your soul. But of course it is not automatic, all of the anointings that go with THE BLESSING are conditional, many of the scriptures that speak of increase start with, if you will do this, and if you will do that, then I will do this.It is a covenant relationship we have with the Lord, His promise is to increase us, and God is faithful. In fact God is always faithful Amen? So then if we are not seeing increase like the Bible speaks about, what is it that we know? We know that the problem does not lie with God, it lies with us.Isa 1:19 tells us…….(KJV) If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: And we must understand that obedience equals faith, that you can’t be a faith person without obedience to this Word, and the very next line, verse 20 is evidence of that. Isaiah 1:20 (KJV) But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.This is a great example of a conditional promise from God. But we must understand, God is for us and not against us, God wants us, no….needs us to prosper in this earth. Did you hear what I just said? God needs you and He needs me to prosper. Our prosperity is a witness to the world of His goodness to us. Our prosperity is a witness of His great love for His people. God needs you to prosper in order to demonstrate to the world, who He really is, His goodness, His mercy, His love, His kindness.Isa 61:9 is a powerful verse that emphasizes how prosperity is evidence of THE BLESSING in our lives. Isaiah 61:9 (AMP) And their offspring shall be known among the nations and their descendants among the peoples. All who see them [in their prosperity] will recognize and acknowledge that they are the people whom the Lord has blessed. Is it any wonder why the devil wants to persuade Christians that prosperity is not of God? The devil does not want you to be a walking billboard advertising the goodness of God to the world! But there is only one way we partake of those great and precious promises, the way we hook up with THE BLESSING, the way THE BLESSING continues to work in our lives, all begins with the tithe. You cannot separate THE BLESSING, from the tithe, that is where the covenant promises are made manifest, in the tithe. So this week, determine in your heart, that you will become a faithful tither, that you will hook up to God as a covenant partner with Him, and you will give that first 10% of all your increase. When you do that, God opens up the windows of heaven for His people and the world will look upon your life and call you blessed!

About 100 people died when a steamer sank near Cape Cod, filling the harbors and nearby beaches with bodies and debris.

¥ On Nov. 23, 1936, the first issue of the pictorial magazine Life is published, and it quickly became an overwhelming success. At its peak, the magazine had a circulation of more than 8 mil-lion. Life ceased running as a weekly publication in 1972.
