The front page of the Spring newsletter was taken in April by Dougie MacTaggart, South Yorkshire Community Ranger. It pictures mums enjoying a walk in the April sunshine during the buggyfit sessions. You can read all about the Kiveton Community Woodland in their update on page 11. On page 3 you can read about Kivo-ebiz meeting with Royalty and congratulations go to Clara Wilcox who joins Kivo-ebiz.

Wales High School give us their report on page 5 and Slimming World give us some tips on healthy and cost-effective eating on page 7. You can find information about new and current training courses at the Old Colliery Offices on page 8 and if anyone is looking for a job, Kiveton Creative have a Helping Hand Back to Work programme running and details of this can be found on page 9.

As winner of the Rotherham Community Achievement Award, Steph Hryschko, representing Kivo-ebiz, was presented to HRH Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, when he came to

Rotherham in January to open the new Spectrum Centre.

Steph Hryschko, Director of Kivo-Ebiz said “Prince Edward did seem genuinely interested in the project and his Lord Lieutenant took our card!” Steph jokingly said “if one had something to clear from the attic, one knew where to come!”

You never know – you might see the odd tiara on our site if you keep a look out.

It has been a great start to the year for the Trust’s trading project, selling a record £4,500 of goods in January and also a record individual sale of £1,725 for an Omega watch. The project has also received £5,000 of “Grassroots” funding to set up in larger space at the Old Colliery Offices with a new telephone line and a web page which will be coming on line in May.

Kivo-ebiz also received £30,000 from Yorkshire Key Fund in February to appoint a part-time worker. Up until now the project has been managed entirely by volunteers but the volume of work has become so high that it does require a permanent member of staff. Clara Wilcox started work on 3rd April as Sales Co-Ordinator for Kivo-ebiz. Clara attended a training course on “Ebay Selling” and then went on to volunteer for the project. Trading on e-bay is certainly the kind of business that thrives in a recession and, with the current rate of growth, it won’t be long before another job is created. ANN ANDREWWe were all very sad to hear of the death of a great champion for our community. Ann, a former parish councillor, worked tirelessly to secure the development and funding of our new village hall. People who give such a commitment to their community are all too rare and she will be sadly missed. Our thoughts and commiserations go to her family and friends.

From the 2nd to 5th December, pupils from Wales High School performed a remake of the Olivier Award winning musical, Honk! Students from all years worked

extremely hard over a period of 10 weeks to stage a fantastic performance. The show went extremely well with every night a sold out performance. All the students that took part thoroughly enjoyed themselves, as did the audience. By Caitlin Parkhouse, Emily McNulty, Amber Thornycroft.

Wales High School are widely recognised for their international program. Part of this program is our trip to the commonwealth carol concert at the church of St.

Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar square, London. We attend every year; and every time, we seem to be the only school group to have been invited. This year, twelve Y10 students were chosen – as a reward for achieving a Certificate of Excellence for their work last year. We saw many of the city’s sights before an afternoon performance of “The Sound of Music”. It was fantastic! In the evening, we had seats reserved for the Carol service – which a memorable occasion for all of us. It had a truly “commonwealth” flavour; celebrities from politics, Tv and show business. Every year a non uniform day for the charity group Barnardos is organised. Each student was asked to donate a pound to the charity in return they could wear their normal clothes for a day. The trade off was a huge success. Hannah Day — Head Girl said, ‘People don’t realise how much organisation goes into collecting money from 62 tutor groups. Overall it was a huge success. We managed to raise around £1300 for Barnardos.’ By Sam Briggs.

Our congratulations go to Dominic Moon. Dominic won the under 18’s Sheffield Golf Championship. He was invited to Brazil, in October, for a 6 day intensive golf tournament called the ‘Faldo Series Grand Final’. He was also filmed for a segment on Look North.

For over a year, girls have been enjoying football coaching sessions with Doncaster Belles ladies coach, Scott Duncanson. As a special pre-Christmas treat for the girls he was joined by Nicola Hobbs who is currently the England Goalkeeper. She came along to give our students a few extra tips and tricks of the sport.

Cross Country Runners Selected to Represent RotherhamAfter 5 weeks of competing against other schools in the cross country league, Wales put out their strongest team to compete in the annual championships in October. There were some excellent team and individual results. Rebecca Moran (Y8) was runner up in the junior girls race, Luke Cotter (Y8) won the junior boys race and Adam Newton (Y12) won the senior boys race. Our junior girls team won their event and brought the Rotherham School’s trophy back to Wales. Well done! Chantelle Kelwick, Rebecca Moran, Jessica Freeman, Luke Cotter, Adam Newton and James Marsh were all selected to represent Rotherham in the South Yorkshire Championships in February.

All Year 7 pupils were offered the chance to visit Crowden. It was the best time ever! Favourite activities were orienteering, archery and the zip wire. I will never forget the fantastic residential trip to Crowden.By Georgia Naughton.

KIVETON CREATIVE LTD RECEIVE SUPPORT FROM YORKSHIRE AND CLYDESDALE BANK FOUNDATION

The Yorkshire and Clydesdale Bank Foundation has made a donation of £300 to Kiveton Creative at the Old Colliery Offices. The donation was made from the Foundation

after Kiveton Creative requested money to assist with their volunteer Project.

The volunteer Project is aimed at recruiting local volunteers who have or would like to gain skills around the services that Kiveton Creative provide. The purpose of this is to increase skills of community members with a view to increasing employability and to provide social opportunities for those who have spare time on their hands. Kiveton Creative have volunteer oportunities in the following areas: office/telephone/reception duties, web design, graphic design and newsletter assistance, teaching assistance and much more. Julie Draper, Manager of Kiveton Creative says; “We are delighted with this donation from the Yorkshire and Clydesdale Bank Foundation. We will be able to use the money towards providing dedicated office space for our volunteers to work. We hope to recruit volunteers of all ages and volunteering for a charity is highly esteemed on your Cv if you are looking for work”.

The Yorkshire and Clydesdale Bank Foundation, established in 2008, aims to support a range of organisations in a number of sectors throughout England and Scotland. The Foundation supports charities that are engaged in work to support arts, education or communities in depressed areas, as well as a variety of youth projects. Dean Cutbill, Director of the Foundation, said; “The Yorkshire and Clydesdale Bank Foundation is delighted that we have been able to support this worthwhile project. We hope that many people will benefit from the donation.”

While the rest of the country moaned and complained about the snow in early February, the people of Kiveton Park got on their coats, gloves and hats, dusted the cobwebs off their redundant sledges and made their way to the slopes on Kiveton Community Woodland.

Since the last issue of Community Matters,

there has been quite a bit of activity on Kiveton Community Woodland. In spite of the colder weather, the weekly Buggyfit session continued, albeit with reduced numbers. Any mum wishing help with losing those few extra pounds gained through over-indulging at Christmas should come along and join in (we meet at the Colliery Road entrance at 1pm every Friday).

Horticulture students from Rotherham University’s Rother valley Campus have been taking part in a practical conservation project on site. They have transplanted young fruit trees that were being out-competed by established trees, cleared scrub and opened up the forest canopy to let sunlight through to promote the growth of ground flora, and cleared copses for use as outdoor environmental education areas by schools. I would like to thank them on your behalf for the hard work they have put in to improving the woodland.

Although wildlife is less active at this time, resident magpies and jackdaws still make their presence known on the lower amenity grassland and the kestrel continues hunting on the plantation compartments at the top of the woodland. A pair of swans has recently appeared on the ponds and hopefully this might lead to them nesting and rearing a brood on site later in the year.

Forthcoming attractions

The Yorkshire & Humberside Brass Band Association

has accepted an invitation to hold a brass band contest on

Kiveton Community Woodland. The Kiveton Brass Festival

2009 will take place in The Amphitheatre on Sunday 12th

July starting at 11am with, hopefully, between 10 and 12

brass bands putting on an entertainment programme

throughout the day. Admission for spectators will be free.

Local businesses have been asked to sponsor the event - if

you know of anyone who might be interested in sponsoring

prizes, contact Dougie MacTaggart.

The Natural Play area is scheduled to be installed during

February and March. It will consist of a number of play

obstacles made from natural materials to encourage

balance, co-ordination, adventurous and imaginative play!

The South Yorkshire Community Woodland Events

Programme for 2009 has now been printed and copies

Sue Walker Children’s Centre, the Kiveton Park Primary Care

Centre, the Kiveton Park & Wales village Hall, and the Old

Once again, the Wales Panto Players put on their pantomime at the Montgomery Theatre, Surrey Street, Sheffield in January this year.

The panto is written and produced by Roy Staniforth, MBE who also plays the Dame. He has been casting the show now for 63 years and at 80 years of age is probably the oldest Dame in town (even the country?).

The feedback this year was that it was a brilliant performance. There was lots of activity going on both on the stage and amongst the audience, literally, with lots of laughter and gleeful shrieks from the younger members of the audience.

Next years production, already in the pipeline, is to be Jack and Jill. The only problem with being in the panto is that you can’t watch it. Shame!

The panto players gave a performance of Joseph & The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat in April at Wales Methodist and at the Crossing Church in Worksop. The purpose of this was to raise money for Wales Methodist and it was a full house every night.

The next event this year will be held at the Acorn Theatre, Worksop, on 25/26 Sept and will be “Showstoppers” including songs from Mama Mia, Les Mis, Oliver, Annie and more besides - all by lots of local, young and amazing talent.

WHATEvER HAPPENED TO BRITISH JUSTICE? Letter from a Concerned Resident

I have been a member of Kiveton Park & Wales Community Development since it first started 11 years ago. Although I haven’t been a very active member, I have taken an interest in all the activities and attended the Annual General Meetings.

I enjoy reading the community newsletter, have attended some of the classes provided and my children have had great benefit from the Redroad music project and sports activities. I appreciate that the Trust has worked to bring lots of money into Kiveton Park & Wales to fund numerous clubs and activities.

The Trusts’ accounts are open for all to see and, following the AGM this year, I queried a “bad debt” of approximately £600. I was told by Directors that this was money owed to the Trust by a local business, Advisors in Finance.

In January this year the Trust took Advisors in Finance to court and Mr Riley, representing Advisors in Finance, was ordered to pay the full outstanding debt with interest to the Trust within a set time limit. He has refused to do this and the Trust can do no more without incurring yet more legal fees.

I feel very angry that this money could have been put to good use in our community. This company continues to do business in Kiveton Park and it seems that there is no redress or conscience about the debt to our village charity. The irony is that they advise people about finance!!

I finish by asking again “whatever happened to British justice?”

Mr Riley has been shown a copy of the letter, but at the time of going to press has declined to comment.

The History Society meets every month at the Old Colliery Offices in Kiveton Park. Who are they? What do

they do? Who can join? How do you join?The members of the Society are a group of Kiveton and Wales residents who are all interested in the history of the villages. Anyone can join, just come along to a meeting, and see what we are all about. For just £10 per year, members enjoy free entry to all our meetings and a range of other benefits.

A lot of work has already been done to document the history of the villages as can be seen on our website, which is being continually updated: www.kivetonwaleshistory.co.uk The aim of the Society is to continue to record and share our history. This is where you come in, you may have photographs not previously seen or stories to tell that are part of the village history.

The photograph below was the picture we used for January in our recently published and almost sold-out calendar. Now I, along with quite a lot of other members

thought this was Wales Square in the snow. quite a few people have approached me saying this is not the case.

Could it be a location in Tickhill? Or is it somewhere else local to us? Maybe it is Wales Square and some of the buildings have changed? Is there anyone out there that can give us a definite answer? Please reply to [email protected].

Our meetings are always lively events! We have had guest speakers such as a Medieval Barber Surgeon, an expert on Elizabethan Dress and others just as interesting. There will be guest speakers at meetings throughout this year. We meet every month, at 6.30pm at the Colliery Offices. Last month, we enjoyed a talk on Pit voices by Brian Elliot on the 12th March. Brian is an acclaimed historian of the coal industry and has published over thirty books. This fascinating talk discussed his decades of research into the lives of the men who worked in South Yorkshire’s pits.

Our next talk is on 21st May, A Thousand Years of Kiveton Park & Wales by Dr John Tanner. Entry fee is £1 but free for Society members. John will be delivering a fast-paced and informative dash through over 1,000 years of the history of Kiveton Park and Wales. Hold on tight and enjoy the ride, from medieval battles to the building of the M1!

My grandfather always used to joke that he was a Yorkshireman born on Wales! vincent Price Froggatt, born 1911, the illegitimate son of Alice

Froggatt. I imagine that this was a bit of a scandal in a small village! Alice never named the father, but vincent believed his father was Daniel Price an architect from Birmingham. How true this was I do not know, a former Wales resident suggested that Alice had a ‘liaison’ with man called Percy!

The photo shows Alice with her parents, brothers and sisters Olive, Rebecca, Cuthbert, the soldier and twins Edgar and Sybil. It is taken outside Wales Court and the story is

that Alice’s parents, Joseph and Ellen were caretakers at Wales Court during the war years. The truth about this is unknown, especially as the 1911 census shows the family at Manor Road with Joseph as a miner at the nearby pit. I can date the photo around 1914 as Cuthbert is present. He was a bugler with the 8th Battalion of the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, and was tragically killed at the Battle of the Somme. His grave is in the churchyard and there is a commemorative plaque inside. Ellen nee Burgin, never really recovered from the loss of her son and died in the flu epidemic in 1919. Joseph continued to live in the village and died in the early 1940s, a sandy haired man who my mother remembers as being deaf as a post.

vincent married Martha Hicks (known as Pat) from Chesterfield and their daughter Mavis is my mother. Pat was very ill for much of my mothers early years and spent many months in Wales with her grandfather and aunts/uncles. Sadly Pat died in 1947 when my mother was 8 years old.

Joseph was one of 22 children and most of them were born in Wales or Waleswood so if you have a Froggatt in your family, you are probably related to me!

If you have any information or any stories about Wales I would love to hear from you - I am as interested in the social side of the family as I am the family history side. Incidentally Martha’s mother also has connection with the area as her first husband, Fred Green was born in Kiveton Park.
