On Thursday 19 th of April, Linda de Lange visited Brampton Primary School. She presented a whole school assembly on Judaism and held two sessions on the festival of Passover for Year 1 and Year 3. After hearing the story of the Passover, the children really enjoyed seeing genuine Jewish artefacts and food. They joined in with activities to help Linda to prepare for the Passovermeal; they had a look at the food on the Seder Plate and learned the significance of each dish and finally they played ‘hunt for the matza bread’! Afterwards the children commented on how they liked asking ’a real Jewish lady’ questions from their previous RE lessons. Many thanks to Linda for her time and enthusiasm and to Miss Bartlett for organising the event. For more information about Religious Education at Brampton read more on page 2! Brampton Primary School has adopted the Bexley Agreed Syllabus 2007 for theteaching of Religious Education. Our aim is to teach a broad and balanced REcurriculum and to present and teach RE as a challenging and exciting subject.
The teaching and experiences of our pupils will reflect the fact that the religioustraditions in Great Britain are, in the main, Christian. However, the teachings andpractices of other principal religions will also be taught. Those represented in GreatBritain are taken to be Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism. In linewith the Bexley New Agreed Syllabus, the following religions are studied:
Reception Refer to Early Learning Goals (Foundation Stage)
Year 1 Christianity and Judaism
Year 2 Christianity and Sikhism
Year 3 Christianity, Hinduism and Judaism
Year 4 Christianity, Islam and Sikhism
Year 5 Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism
Year 6 Christianity, Islam and Buddhism
Throughout each year group except year 4 there is a thematic unit studied.
Year 1 Creation
Year 2 Celebration
Year 3 Belonging
Year 5 Expressing Faith
Year 6 Journey of life and death
Whilst it is important that children gain specific knowledge about differentreligions, fostering positive attitudes and values are of equal importance, together with respecting people’s rights to hold different beliefs from their own.
Congratulations
Well done to Jessica Baldwin in 4C who has an unusual
hobby—she is a registered rabbit breeder and has
won a lot of Trophies and Rosettes with her Champion
rabbits. Last weekend there was a big show and she
took five out of her 30 rabbits and she won the Best
Junior Prize with her rabbit Cappuccino!
