School BoardThe School Board generally meets twice a month on the second and fourth Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Admin-istration Building. Dear Issaquah School District Community,

As I reflect on my third year as Superintendent, I appreciate this opportunity to share the Issaquah School District’s progress with the community. First, I would like to thank everyone who voted in our recent school bond election. With your approval, we may now move forward to address the tremendous growth in our region. This allows us to build learning environments that support our teachers and students who continue to perform at the highest level in academics, athletics, and activities. Additionally, I would like to inform you of our District’s efforts to create a culture of kindness, enhance sustainability, and improve safety.

I am proud of the work that our students and staff do on a daily basis to promote a culture of kindness. When I walk into a school building, I see so many visible examples of kindness, such as Buddy Benches, mix-it-up lunches, and school-wide efforts to support community social services. We are fortunate to have so many students, staff, and community members who support the idea of creating a culture of kindness. As we become an increasingly diverse community, we are focusing professional development efforts on cultural competency. We want to ensure that everyone in our schools feels welcome, supported, and cared for. The Issaquah School District is a leader in sustainable practices, including water conservation, waste management, and energy efficiency. Every school in our District has earned King County’s Level II or above Green Schools designation, as has the District. King County has also recognized numerous staff with Earth Hero awards. Puget Sound Energy has acknowledged us for reducing our consumption of electricity, even as the District has grown. At the national level, the US Department of Education recently awarded our District its Green Ribbon Award for reducing our water consumption.

As we continue our efforts to create safe schools, in addition to performing emergency drills, trainings, and safety upgrades to facilities, we also believe that safety includes the social and emotional health and well-being of our students. This year, the District launched a new Positive Behavioral, Social and Emotional Support (PBSES) program, which included adding student support coaches in our elementary and middle schools. We have also added mental health counselors at our comprehensive high schools and put two elementary pilot programs in place to address this important aspect of safety.

As Superintendent, I could not ask for a better District to work for. Every day I am grateful for our amazing students, staff, parents, and community. We could not achieve all of this without our partnership with the Issaquah Schools Foundation and our Parent Teacher Student Associations. The level of involvement and support we receive truly puts our District in a class of its own.

Issaquah PTSA CouncilWhen you join your school’s PTA or PTSA, you are becoming part of the largest volunteer organization in our state. You are ensuring every child in the Issaquah School District has a powerful voice advocating for their health, safety, well being, and education. Your support is instrumental in helping the Washington State PTA realize its vision: Making every child’s potential a reality.

The Issaquah School District has a well-known reputation of partnership between the schools and the PTA/PTSA. Your school’s PTA/PTSA provides program opportunities developed directly for your school community and helps the school by providing volunteers for school activities. One of the easiest ways to learn more about the school your child attends is by getting involved with the PTA/PTSA. I encourage you to learn more about everything your PTA/PTSA does at your school, I’m sure you’ll be impressed.

There are great things happening across the District. As a parent, the best way to stay informed and get involved is to become a PTA/PTSA member. Find a committee that will benefit from your involvement and engage with your school community. Make the commitment to attend one membership meeting and volunteer for one event. Your student will be the beneficiary of your involvement!
