From Isaan, with loveWe took the train North from Bangkok and straight into the sleepy heart of Isaan. My heartbeat slowed as we left the city and I breathed deeply, infatuated by the fragrances and the slower pace of life.

Not for all the tea in IsaanI have drunk much tea in my time, maybe a thousand cups, but I have never tasted anything quite like the pandan tea we drank here. Fresh, nutty, grassy and green, it was like drinking in the forest itself.

A Sight For Sore Eyes We finally sat down for breakfast, eyelids weighted with sleep. We were brought local bread and homemade kumquat jam; the taste may have been heightened by 11 hours of breathing in diesel fumes from a badly maintained bus, but it was delicious.
