We begin the story by looking at the records of Luke.

Background of the Servant in the Law

If your brother, a Hebrew man, or a Hebrew woman, is sold to you and serves you six years, then in the seventh year you shall let him go free from you.

Deuteronomy 15:12

And when you send him away free from you, you shall not let him go away empty-handed;

Deut 15:13-15

you shall supply him liberally from your flock, from your threshing floor, and from your winepress.

You shall supply him from what the LORD has blessed you with, you shall give to him.

Deuteronomy 15:14

You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God redeemed you; therefore I command you this thing today.

But the greatest among you shall be your servant.

Purpose for which Christ

came

Sitting down, He called the twelve and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.”

We are “servants” to one another

Acts 4.29

When the Apostles speak of that concept they always used the term Bond Servant to Christ

We are “bond-servants” to God

What is a “bond servant” ?

“Now these are the ordinances which you are to set before them: “If you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve for six years; but on the seventh he shall go out as a free man without payment

Ex 21:1-6

“If he comes alone, he shall go out alone; if he is the husband of a wife, then his wife shall go out with him.

“If his master gives him a wife, and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall belong to her master, and he shall go out alone.

But if the slave plainly says, ‘I love my master, my wife and my children; I will not go out as a free man.

Ex 21:1-6

Then his master shall bring him to God, then he shall bring him to the door or the doorpost. And his master shall pierce his ear with an awl; and he shall serve him permanently.

Bond-Servant to you

We come to God

Bond-Servant to the Lord for the rest of his life

When you become “Born-Again” you become a “bond servant” to God and a Child of God

When you become “Born-Again” you become more free than before you came to God

Irony

When you were “in-the-world” you were slaves to the wrong

thing

We are “bond-servants” to God

We are “servants” to one another

With all humility and gentleness, with patience, we are to bear with one another in love

Here is what the Scriptures teach:

Clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble

Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet

Today we will discuss this teaching of Jesus

Just before the Passover feast, Jesus knew that his time had come to depart from this world to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now loved them to the very end. 

John  13

The evening meal was in progress, …Because Jesus knew that the Father had handed all things over to him, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, 

John 13.3

Jesus got up from the meal, removed his outer clothes, took a towel and tied it around himself. 

He poured water into the washbasin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to dry them with the towel he had wrapped around himself.

So when Jesus had washed their feet and put his outer clothing back on, he took his place at the table again and said to them, “Do you understand what I have done for you? 

You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and do so correctly, for that is what I am.  If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you too ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example – you should do just as I have done for you. 

John 13.14

I am among you as the one who serves. Luke 22.27

I tell you the solemn truth, the slave is not greater than his master, nor is the one who is sent as a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 

If you understand these things, you will be blessed if you do them. John 13.17

So He came to Simon Peter. He said to Him, Lord, do You wash my feet?

Jesus answered and said to him, “What I do you do not realize now, but you will  understand  hereafter.”  

Peter said to Him, Never shall You wash my feet!

Jesus answered him, “if I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.” 

You as people come, and they sit before you as My people, and they hear the words you say,

they hear the words you say, but they will not do them; for with their mouths they show much love, but their hearts….

Jesus said ….Uselessly do they worship Me…Matt 15.9

having a form of godliness 2 Tim 3.5 

Pretenders and hypocrites, as it stands written: These people [constantly] honor Me with their lips, but their hearts hold off and 

are far distant from Me. Mark 7.6

He wants a heart that is faithful and  inclined toward Him….

Jesus said, These people draw near to Me with their mouth,  And honor Me with their lips,But their heart is far from Me. Matthew 15.8 

We are in church, we say all the right things, we sing all the right songs but our heart is so distant from the Lord.  

It’s a heart condition …that matters…the Lord sees our heart.  The Bible rightly says 

These people draw near to Me with their mouth,  And honor Me with their lips,  But their heart is far from Me.

Matthew  15.8 

For God see not as man sees for man looks at the outward 

appearance but the Lord looks at the heart 

(1Sam 16.7) . 

Being right with the Lord means that Jesus is truly Lord of your life and that nothing 

else matters but knowing Him. 

It is a condition of the “heart”

It means….standing firm in faith acting upon His WORDand being obedient to His commands.

God said to Ezekiel….they hear the words you say, but they will not do them

Jesus said, “Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I 

say? 

Luke 6.46

Jesus came as a light into the world and anyone who trusts in Him will not be put to shame
