The USS Cole Bombing, or the USS Cole Incident, was a suicide attack against the United States Navy destroyer USS Cole on October 12, 2000

while it was harbored and refueled in the Yemeni port of Aden. Seventeen American sailors were killed, and 39 were injured. This event was the

deadliest attack against a United States Naval vessel since 1987.

USA Patriot Act“On October 26, 2001, President George W. Bush signs the Patriot Act, an anti-terrorism law drawn up in response to the attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

The USA PATRIOT Act, as it is officially known, is an acronym for "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism." Bush hoped the bipartisan legislation would empower law enforcement and intelligence agencies to prevent future terrorist attacks on American soil.

The law was intended, in Bush’s words, to "enhance the penalties that will fall on terrorists or anyone who helps them." The act increased intelligence agencies’ ability to share information and lifted restrictions on communications surveillance. Law enforcement officials were given broader mandates to fight financial counterfeiting, smuggling and money laundering schemes that funded terrorists. The Patriot Act’s expanded definition of terrorism also gave the FBI increased powers to access personal information such as medical and financial records. The Patriot Act superseded all state laws.”

Afghanistan• The USSR attempted to take over Afghanistan, but failed.• This allowed the Taliban to take over in 1994.• They created a very strict government based on Islamic law.

– They forbade careers and education for women.• After the attacks on September 11, 2001 on the World Trade

Center in New York, Afghanistan was seen as a safe place for terrorists.– Especially Osama Bin Laden

CNN Breaking News- Saturday, October 29, 2011At least 13 U.S. service members were killed in Kabul, Afghanistan, on Saturday when a suicide bomber struck a vehicle in a NATO military convoy, NATO and U.S. military officials said.

The U.S. official emphasized details are continuing to unfold. A heavily damaged vehicle is believed to be an armored bus that was carrying U.S. troops in the convoy.

Saturday's attack caused a "number" of NATO and local Afghan casualties, NATO's International Security Assistance Force said in a statement .

Four Afghans also were reported dead. It was unclear how many people were wounded, said Sediq Sediqqi, a spokesman for Afghanistan's Interior Ministry.

Operation Iraqi Freedom begins…

Page 13: Iraq Saddam Hussein Rule: July 16, 1979- April 3, 2003.

WHAT WAS OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM?

After the Persian Gulf War in 1991, Iraq had to agree to certain weapons inspections.

Saddam Hussein stopped cooperating with the United Nations weapons inspectors around 1999.

The U.S. was concerned that Iraq was developing weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and could possibly sell them to terrorists.

The United States, along with 30 other countries (The Coalition of the Willing), decides to take military action against Iraq.

•This war had nothing

to do with Osama bin

Laden. •We were not fighting

him in Iraq, and his

capture was not our

goal in this operation!

The United States will withdraw almost all its troops from Iraq by the end of the year, as a current agreement with Iraq dictates, a U.S. official told CNN on Friday.

Only about 150 troops, a negligible force, will remain to assist in arms sales.

The United States had expected that some of the roughly 40,000 Americans in Iraq would remain there to aid in training and security. But the two nations were unable to reach a deal on a key issue regarding legal immunity for U.S. troops, a senior U.S. military official with direct knowledge of the discussions told CNN this month.

President Obama will make a statement about the U.S. involvement in Iraq at 12:45 p.m. ET. Watch live coverage of the president and analysis from Wolf Blitzer, John King and Gloria Borger on CNN-TV.

"After nearly nine years, America's war in Iraq will be over," President Obama said Friday, announcing full withdrawal of U.S. troops by year's end.

"Today I can say that our troops in Iraq will definitely be home for the holidays," he said.

Obama said the United States will continue its interest in a strong, stable Iraq after U.S. troops leave.
