My super long biography :O : Iqbal Masih was a young Pakistan Catholic boy that was sold into child labour at the age of 4 for $12 by his mother and was shot at the age of 12.   Iqbal was born in Muridke, a small, rural village outside of Lahore in Pakistan, at the year of 1982. After he was born, his father abandoned the family, so his mother had to take care him and his siblings, but she found it difficult to support a family with a small income.   In 1986, Iqbal’s brother was going to get married and they want to have a celebration. But since they have a small income, they need more money. To get more money, the only way is to ask a local employer, where the employer gave the family money, in exchange for a small child to work for them. So, Iqbal’s mother chose Iqbal to be exchanged at the age of 4.   The working conditions were terrible. Iqbal and the other bonded children have to squat upon a wooden bench and bend forward to tie millions of knots into carpets. The children were required to follow a specific pattern, choosing each thread and tying each knot carefully. The children were not allowed to speak to each other. If the children started to daydream, a guard might hit them or they might cut their own hands with the sharp tools they used to cut the thread. If they talked back, ran away, homesick or physically sick, they were punished. Punishment like being hung upside down, severe beatings, being chained. Iqbal often did these things and got lots of punishment. Iqbal often get punishment. At the age of 10, the loan had grown to 13,000 rupees (about $260).  Iqbal knew that he had to get out of these. One day he heard about an organisation called BLLF. An organisation that saves the children from labour. He went to talk to the President of the organisation about it and the president accepted him and he went to a school in USA. Instead of studying a course for 4 years, he just studied for 2 years. Then, he went back to his home town to see his family.  On Sunday, April 16, 1995, he got shot by “Carpet Mafia”. He was buried on Monday, April 17. 800 people went to his funeral. It was sad that he died and was trying to free bonded children. In 1994, Iqbal was awarded the Reebok Human Rights Award.
