He teaches pharmaceutical chemistry and medicinal chemistry in the pharmacy undergraduate programme. He graduated from the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, USM with a Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) in 2003. He earned his Ph.D. in medicinal chemistry from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2009. His doctoral research is about the synthesis and biological evaluation of aurones as potential chemopreventive agents. His research interest is in finding new and improved medicinal compounds through synthesis and design of small molecules, the study of their structure-activity relationship, improving their drug-like properties, and the medicinal use of natural products. You will be able to: draw chemical structures suitable for publications, elucidate small-molecules structure with confidence. independently interpret 1D-NMR, Mass and IR spectra and use ChemDraw and SciFinder efficiently to search for chemical literature. Ezatul Ezleen Kamarulzaman, is a lecturer at Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, USM since 2012. She obtained her undergraduate degree in Industrial Chemistry (2002) and MSc. in Pharmacy (2006) from USM. She pursued her PhD under the Joint Supervision between USM and Institute National Polytechnique de Lorraine (INPL), Nancy, France. Currently, she teaches Drug Modelling, Principles of Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Chemistry courses for Pharmacy undergraduates. Her research interests are in the area of computer-aided drug design, peptide synthesis, photodynamic therapy and synthesis of small molecules which mainly focus on finding a new therapeutic inhibitor of influenza, dengue and cancer angiogenesis. Dr. Aisyah Saad Abdul Rahim is Program Chairperson for Pharmaceutical Chemistry discipline at the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, USM. Recipient of USM Teaching Excellence Award 2012, she is a registered pharmacist with a B. Pharm. (Hons., Cardiff University) and a Ph.D. (University of Nottingham). She has authored and co-authored over than 40 structural reports, articles, reviews and a book chapter on neuraminidase inhibitors as anti-influenza agents, as well as served as reviewer for journals in the fields of medicinal chemistry and organic synthesis. Currently, Dr Aisyah Saad serves as Editor-in-Chief for Malaysia Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences (http://web.usm.my/mjps/). The workshop is aimed towards postgraduates and researchers who require the basics in structure elucidation of small molecules and natural products. We will start by showing you how to draw chemical structures using ChemDraw, and do literature search with SciFinder. These newly-acquired skills are useful in structural assignment and elucidation using 1D-NMR, Mass and IR spectra. By the end of this workshop, the participants should be able to interpret their spectra confidently. Hands-on, open discussion session will be conducted in the afternoon–you may bring your own spectra.
