Recap: What is a (Hill) Rally?

A series of special stages, run to Target Time (drive as fast as you can)

Linked together with Liaison Routes (drive in a specific amount of time)

With Time Controls everywhere (where your time is recorded)

Recap: Time Controls

Time Controls are simply a known location where your time-card is marked.

There are two types: MAIN CONTROL and TIME CONTROL. For the most part,

they are the same.

Overview

The navigator has three primary tasks:

Page 6: Introduction to (hill) rally navigation

Overview

The navigator has three primary tasks:

1. Keep control of the paperwork

2. Navigate the driver from time-control to time-control (using a Road Book)

3. Keep the driver on-time (using the Time Card)

Once in the Special Stage, you are the assistant (unless there’s pace notes, in

which case you’re back to task 1)

Page 11: Introduction to (hill) rally navigation

Basic tools

• A watch, probably digital, preferably accurate & easy to set

The Time Schedule:

The Time Schedule:

Page 14: Introduction to (hill) rally navigation

Schedule Time verses Target Time

Scheduled Time:

• A timetable for each point is given for a theoretical car 0

• The time for each car to arrive at any given point is car 0 time + car number

• Buses run to Scheduled Time

Target Time:

• You leave point A at a given time

• The time you should reach point B is based on the time you leave point A

• The time you should reach point C is based on the time you leave point B

• The time you should reach point D is based on the time you leave point C

• Speed events are generally Target Time.

Time Cards:

Page 26: Introduction to (hill) rally navigation

What happens at a Time Control?

• You check in on your due time:

• You may enter up to 59 seconds before you hand over your time card,

• You may hand over your time card any time within the 60 seconds your due time.

• You will be given a start about 3 minutes after you check in:

• You must be ready to start when you enter Arrivals,

• The start crew may need to give you a time that’s not actually 3 minutes later.

• You may ask for a delay to:

• Clean lights, windscreens, vehicle glass, and/or competition numbers,

• Replace a tyre (with one carried on the car) - Cross Country only.

• Start is by traffic lights:

• Start in on the whole minute,

• 15 second countdown,

• If you ain’t ready, that’s not our fault.

Finish time and Road Time

• Road Time starts from when you cross the Flying Finish

Remember it will take time to travel from FF to STOP

Remember it will take time for the Stop Line Crew to confirm the time on their

check-sheet; check the previous-car numbers; and have a wee chat about the

event

• Remember if you have 6 minutes to travel, you may lose 2 or 3 minutes to

paperwork & the vagaries of how time works

• What happens when 3 cars cross the FF at 11:51:14, 11:51:32, and 11:51:56

Solutions : Lateness & Regroups

• Lateness: Kick out the people at the back

• Regroups: Hold up the people at the front

Page 38: Introduction to (hill) rally navigation

What is Lateness?

Page 39: Introduction to (hill) rally navigation

Lateness:

You get +1 minute for every minute you are over Target Time, or are Late at a

Time Control

Once “Over Total Lateness” (OTL), you are out of the event.

Navigators should try and calculate current event time + Lateness

Lateness cannot be recouped by arriving early!

Penalty Free Lateness

Being a bit late, and not getting a penalty

Not used in Hill Rallies

Page 40: Introduction to (hill) rally navigation

How does the Regroup work?

Page 41: Introduction to (hill) rally navigation

How does the Regroup work?

A regroup is primarily designed to bring a spread-out field back together:

• First car arrives whenever it arrives

• Subsequent cars arrive as and when

• First car leaves at the scheduled time

• Subsequent cars leave at 1 minute intervals

• At some point, cars entering the regroup will depart immediately

What a regroup doesn’t do is shorten the day – it only lengthens it.
