Allow me to introduce myself, I,

Jusn Perrault, have been

recently hired as the GRFN

Community Events Coordinator.

This year I graduated from Sault

College with a diploma and a

cerficate in Liberal Studies/G.A.S

which was focused on Teaching

with our drum group Bear Creek

3 young children, 2 boys and a

girl. I am really looking forward to

doing the best job I can at this

posion and plan to work hard at

making events as awesome and

I would like to add this general

informaon to the newsle/er for

our community members who

▪ The GRFN pow-wow is sll

a tradional pow-wow this year,

but we are now featuring

dance contest "specials". This

year’s pow wow is not strictly

a compeon pow-wow. As

usual, community members are

encouraged to come out, support

and parcipate.

▪ There will be slight changes

to the regular pow-wow agenda

(exhibion and contest dance

songs for specific dance contest

not feel discouraged with the dance

contest specials. It is our plan to add these

contest specials to our pow wow to

encourage more people from out of town

to come into our community and have a

good me at our pow-wow. In turn, the

more people who come into our communi-

ty from out of town, the more traffic our

local businesses will get that weekend.

▪ We are planning to meet every

Thursday night 6 pm at the Rec Centre to

talk about the pow-wow, and sign up

volunteers.

▪ I am planning a special honour song

Sat. Aug 15, someme aDer the aDernoon

grand entry to honour the late Arlene

(Nolan) Barry. I am encouraging any close

family and friends to come out and parc-

ipate as we honour Arlene and her hard

work and dedicaon to the pow-wow and

our community over the years. She is and

will be greatly missed.

▪ Feel free to contact Jusn Perrault,

Community Events Coordinator @ the Rec

Centre for any quesons, concerns,

volunteer sign up, and vendor regis-

traon. 705-946-4006 ext. # 204.

▪ This year’s theme is "Our

Journey". We decided on this theme

because everybody has a journey of

their own at some capacity in their

life, so we are choosing to honour the

steps it takes to get from where we

came from to where we are going. Aho, Miigwetch!

Chi miigwetch to all who donated and came out to

garden is to believe in the future. Our future is

bright. And will include good, fresh, local foods.

We would also like to say chi miigwetch to the

Garden River Community Trust summer students

and Alanna Jones for their hard work in improving

the beauty and funcon of the Community Garden.

Chi miigwetch also to Darwin Belleau for donang

Making Sun Protec8on the New Rule

Did you know that one bad sunburn

before age 18 doubles the chances of

developing melanoma, an o#en-fatal

form of skin cancer that is on the rise

in Canada but is also largely prevent-

able?

As parents, we have rules that help

protect our family members to keep

us safe. Some rules might be - always

put on your seatbelt in the car, wear

a helmet while cycling or look both

ways before we cross the street; but

do you have a rule about always

wearing sunscreen? A new sun safety

campaign “New Family Rule” targets

parents with that very queson.

h/p://newfamilyrule.com/why-a-

new-family-rule/

Wearing sunscreen should be part of

your daily roune. Remember to be

safe in the sun this summer by

▪ Covering up - wear protecve

clothing such as long sleeve

shirts and long pants with ghtly

woven fabric.

▪ Reducing sun exposure during

peak mes 11:00 a.m. – 4:00

p.m.

▪ Seeking shade or create your

own by using an umbrella or

▪ find a tree.

▪ Wearing a hat with a wide brim

(3-4”).

▪ Wearing 100% UV Protecve

sunglasses,

Also

▪ Don’t forget to apply sunscreen

with a minimum of SPF 30, 15-

30 minutes before heading out

into the sun, reapplying every 2

hours and aDer sweang or

swimming.

▪ That babies under 1 year of age

should not be exposed to direct

sunlight.

▪ There is no such thing as a safe

tan. Tanning parlors and sun

lamps should be avoided.

▪ Remember, when the UV Index

is 3 or higher, full protecon is

required.

Enjoy the warm weather, but don’t

forget to protect yourself! The effects

of a sunburn aren’t as immediate or

graphic as something like a child

falling off their bike or being in a car

accident but remember your skin

never forgets!!! The damage is

cumulave, whether it is a sun tan or

a sun burn – The fact remains YOUR

SKIN IS DAMAGED!!!

“One in every seven Canadians will

get some form of skin cancer during

their lifemes” (Cancer Care

Ontario). So don’t let yourself or your

children become a vicm.

Have you ever wondered how you could

best help your community?? What would

have the greatest impact? What would

be truly rewarding?

If you have ever contemplated these

quesons, consider this:

Life affords no greater responsibility, no

greater privilege, than the raising of the

next genera)on.

-C. Everet Koop, M.D.

If you have children of your own or have

helped guide and support children and

youth, you understand the message in

this quote. Here at Nogdawindamin it is

our mission to assist the communies in

their responsibility to strengthen families

and communies for the safety and

well-being of children by providing

Nogdawindamin Alterna8ve (Foster) Care Program

community based services grounded in

Anishinabek values.

One of the programs that aids in fulfilling

that mission is the Genawenman Binojiuk

or Alternave Care Program (Foster Care).

This program offers an opportunity for

Anishinabek children to remain in their

community and closely connected to their

Anishinabek tradions.

WE NEED YOU!!

We are currently seeking caring,

compassionate and movated individuals

and families who are considering

impacng their community, a child

in need, and ulmately that next

generaon!! In other words we are

looking for more Alternave Foster Care

Families! Could it be you?

In all honesty it is a huge undertaking

and not one to be taken lightly. But as

the expression goes, “nothing worth

having comes easy”. The reward of

being an Alternave (Foster) Care

Parent, one that mentors, protects

and loves a child in need, far out-

weighs the challenges of becoming

one.

Come join our circle of caring and

become an Alternave Care (Foster)

Parent:
