PAVEMENT PRESERVATION

Page 8: Intro to our Dexter Valley Team Andy Desmarais- Operations Manager Colin MacKinlay - Chief Estimator Kevin Bezanson – General Superintendent Matthew McLaren.

Why Preserve?

Page 9: Intro to our Dexter Valley Team Andy Desmarais- Operations Manager Colin MacKinlay - Chief Estimator Kevin Bezanson – General Superintendent Matthew McLaren.

Pavement Preservation

• Allows you to change your approach:

– Look for and correct small problems before they become big ones

– Eliminate the "worst first" Practice

Page 10: Intro to our Dexter Valley Team Andy Desmarais- Operations Manager Colin MacKinlay - Chief Estimator Kevin Bezanson – General Superintendent Matthew McLaren.

Pavement Preservation

• Pavement Preservation is efficient, effective and economical.

• Save money• Improve safety• Reduce delays• Help pavement last longer• Improve the performance of the entire road network

Page 11: Intro to our Dexter Valley Team Andy Desmarais- Operations Manager Colin MacKinlay - Chief Estimator Kevin Bezanson – General Superintendent Matthew McLaren.

Doing It Right!

The Right Pavement

• Relying on public complaints is to probably to late.

• Up to date pavement condition surveys are key

Page 12: Intro to our Dexter Valley Team Andy Desmarais- Operations Manager Colin MacKinlay - Chief Estimator Kevin Bezanson – General Superintendent Matthew McLaren.

Doing It Right!

The Right Time

• Preventative Maintenance needs to be completed in the early stages of the pavement’s Life.

• Move preventative maintenance up on the priority list.

Page 13: Intro to our Dexter Valley Team Andy Desmarais- Operations Manager Colin MacKinlay - Chief Estimator Kevin Bezanson – General Superintendent Matthew McLaren.

Doing It Right!

The Right Treatment

• Picking the proper treatment for the right level of distress. Here are some things to consider:

Page 14: Intro to our Dexter Valley Team Andy Desmarais- Operations Manager Colin MacKinlay - Chief Estimator Kevin Bezanson – General Superintendent Matthew McLaren.

Doing It Right!

• The type of pavement• The type, extent and severity of the pavement distress• The age of the pavement (or the time since the last

major rehabilitation)• The type of the road - its use, volume, and traffic speed• The availability of qualified contractors, construction

technology; materials and qualified agency staff• The time of year for maintenance• How long maintenance will take and the impact it will

have on drivers• The pavement quality needed after the pavement has

been treated.

Typical Problems

Standard Solutions

Page 34: Intro to our Dexter Valley Team Andy Desmarais- Operations Manager Colin MacKinlay - Chief Estimator Kevin Bezanson – General Superintendent Matthew McLaren.

Cracking

• Cause:– Asphalt Shrinkage, Cold

Temperatures, Shifting Underlaying

• Solution:– Crack Sealant– And / Or followed by Chip

Seal, Slurry or other surface

– Partial or full depth reclamation

Page 35: Intro to our Dexter Valley Team Andy Desmarais- Operations Manager Colin MacKinlay - Chief Estimator Kevin Bezanson – General Superintendent Matthew McLaren.

Rutting

• Causes:– Traffic and Heat– Weak Subgrade– Mix Type

• Solutions– Microsurfacing

for minor rutting– Milling– Polymer Asphalt

for busy intersections
