.66: Karen arrived at the campus at about five o’clock in the afternoon and we decided we would go to the pub for dinner and we did this and this in itself was a strange experience because it felt like I was almost on a date and I suppose the whole feeling was emphasized in a way when the publican made some rather lewd comments when we told him what we were actually doing, that Karen was going to be filming me sleeping. He put a sexual slant on the thing which wasn’t it at all, it was just a piece of objective research but I couldn’t get over the feeling that allowing this person who I didn’t know very well into the most sanctified area of my life, in my bedroom, and into my personal world of sleep and it made me realise how, how personal and how very intimate that space is to me and I guess to other people as well. My little space, where I go, off stage if you like, when I’m behind the scenes at the end of the day, and its where I can really be myself and the only person I allow in that space is normally my husband, with whom I have an intimate relationship. So to allow somebody else, a stranger, to spend the night in my room was almost I guess like going back to the time when you know, when you have a one night stand maybe, and you’d be inviting a relative stranger back to share your space, although Karen wasn’t sharing my bed.
