West Virginia graduate students are chosen to assist lawmakers serving in leadership positions of the Senate and the House of Delegates. Walter Rollins Scholars participate in the lawmaking process by researching relevant issues, assisting in preparation for oor deliberations and monitoring legislative activity under the direction of legislative leadership. Robert W. Burk, Jr. Student Interns assist standing committee chairpersons and other leading senators and delegates. Tese students receive rsthand knowledge by observing the making of public policy, studying how the legislative structure bears upon the manner in which decisions are made and aiding legislators in their daily work activities.  Number of positions:  6 (Rollins Scholars: 2, Burk Interns: 4) Eligibility: - Students enrolled in g raduate degree programs at accredited WV public or private colleges or u niversities - In good academic standing Walter Rollins Scholars & Ro bert W. Herndon Fellows hi p Undergraduates are selected to participate in the 60 -day session as Herndon Fellows and are assigned to assist a sole legislator from either the Senate or the House of Delegates Te interns are required to perform research and  various stafunctions. Among other jo b-related responsibilities, participants are introduced to and develop an understanding of the politics of legislation, legislative research, bill drafting, the role and function of committees and the executive-legislative liaison.  Number of positions :  10 Eligibility: - Full-time undergraduate students of all majors and disciplines from both public and private institutions of higher learning in West Virginia - Completed 60 undergraduate hours - Achieved grade point average sucient for admission into degree program - Completed course in political science or extensive public aairs experience Undergraduat e students are selected to assist a speci c senator or delegate for one week during the regular 60- day session. Participants are assigned to a legislator who assists in explaining the legislative process. Tey attend committee meetings and public hearings where legislation and issues are extensively discussed. Tese interns sit on the oor during daily sessions surrounded by legislators determining the fate of legislation. Tey aid legislators with issue research, constituent requests and other legislative tasks.  Number of positions:  50 (25 per week of a two-week period mid-session) Eligibility: - Full-time sophomores, juniors and seniors of all majors and disciplines from two and four year public and private institutions of higher learning - In good academic standing with at least one course in government - GPA is taken into consideration Frasure-Singleton Internship Lewis McManus Fellowship Te chosen graduate student will serve as a legislative intern for the duration of one academic year, including one regular session of the Legislature and monthly interim sessions. Te student will be granted one  year’s tuition and fees at his or her university and will be provided with a stipend during the legislative session and interim sessions. Finalists wi ll be nominated by his or her respective university, and the recipient will be chosen by a House of Delegates committee.  Number of positions : 1 Eligibility: - Second-year graduate student who is seeking a master’s degree in public administ ration through West Virginia University or Marshall University, or the two universities’ joint program - Must maintain a g rade point average of 3.0 or better following application to, and during the term of, the fellowship - Completed 18 hours of graduate study by the end of the semester in which they are applying, and must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher in their graduate studies - Must demonstrate a commitmen t to public service after graduation (preferably in West Virginia) For additional information on all internships and to apply, visit the Legislature’s web site at: www.legis.state.wv.us/educational/internship.cfm

Our Legislature is comprised o 100 delegates and

34 senators elected to represent the voice o their

constituents. Tese legislators meet in ormal session

or 60 days each year. During session, the city o 

Charleston becomes an epicenter or people and groups

promoting ideas they believe should become law. Bills

which aect you and every citizen o the state are

researched, drated, discussed, changed, debated and voted upon during these 60 days.

Tis surge o activity, the incoming tide o in ormation

and increased numbers o citizens participating in t he

lawmaking process necessitate the hiring o additional

sta to assist lawmakers in their public serv ice.

I you want to help shape West Virginia’s uture, here’s

 your chance to work one-on-one with state leaders.

Internships with the Legislature provide a transitional

step rom the academic world to the work world.

Student interns enhance their education while making

 valuable contacts or uture job opportunities and

oten get ahead o competitors or choice positions.

Former interns have gone on to obtain jobs withi n the

Legislature, state agencies and private organiz ations

ollowing the completion o their internships.

A way to enhance your education--a chance to work with

state leaders--an opportunity perhaps to land a antastic

 job ater graduation--it’s all right here, with the West

Virginia Legislature.

Introduction

Aspiring journalists are selected to work or all members

o both the Senate and

the House o Delegates

during the 60-day 

session by providing

services oered by the

Legislature’s Reerence

& Inormation Center.

Once selected,

participants are

assigned to cover oor

sessions, committee

meetings, public

hearings, press conerences and other legislative

activities. Chosen interns participate in the publication

o a weekly newsletter, compose news releases and

cutlines and respond to media and citizen requests.

 Number of positions: 4

Eligibility:

- Full-time sophomores, juniors, seniors or graduate

students majoring in the eld o journalism at an

accredited West Virginia journalism school

- In good academic standing

- Familiar with Wordperect, Microsot Word or similar

word processing program

- Skilled in AP style

- Ability to prooread eectively
