Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad, formerly known asIndian School of Mines, was inaugurated on 9th December 1926, by Lord Irwin, the thenViceroy of India. The institute was granted status of a deemed to be university in 1967under Section 3 of UGC Act, 1956. In 2016 the institute was converted into an IndianInstitute of Technology after a bill to that effect was passed by Indian parliament. The institute was established to address need for trained manpower for mining activitiesin the country. Initially, the courses taught in the institute were drawn from disciplines ofMining and Applied Geology. Over the years, the institute considerably expanded itsactivities. The institute now offers graduate and post graduate level programs in severalareas of science, technology and management. IIT (ISM) has substantially contributed tothe industrial and economic development of the country through its in-house state-of-the-art facilities for advanced studies and research. In 2020 the institute was ranked at12th position by NIRF for its engineering programme.

Library: Institute’s Central Library is one ofAsia’s biggest libraries and contains a hugedatabase of books and research papers.

Centre for Innovation, Incubation andEntrepreneurship (CIIE): CIIE works towardspromoting innovation and entrepreneurshipat the institute.

Computer Lab: Institute has multiplecomputer laboratories, each containingupdated computer hardware and software.

Datasets: Institute subscribes to severaldatasets, such as Bloomberg terminals forfinancial data, for use by faculty andstudents.

Residential facilities: Institute offersresidential facilities, equipped with highspeed internet and LAN to students andfaculty.

Sports and recreation: Sports fields andStudents’ Activity Centre help studentspursue sports and cultural interests.

Department of Management Studies, formerly known as Department of Industrial Engineeringand Management, was established in 1977. The department has been offering an M.Techprogramme in Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM) and PhD since 1977 and a full-time course on Masters in Business Administration since 1997. The three programs arecurrently flagship programs of the department. In past department has also been part of dualdegree programme in Mining, Mineral and Petroleum Management. Keeping pace with thetimes, department launched MBA in Business Analytics programme in 2020.

Department’s rich history of more than four decades has seen it move from strength tostrength, continuously evolving and reinventing itself in tandem with changing businessand industrial environment of the country. Along with routine classroom lectures,students of the department take active part in presentations, seminars, workshops etc.Students of MBA and M. Tech (IEM) programme undergo compulsory internship at anorganization for period of six to eight weeks to gain hand on experience. The department draws its faculty from some of the leading educational institutes of thecountry. The faculty are actively engaged in consultancy assignments, in-house and offcampus executive development programs and research projects. Some of theorganizations/institutions that have supported faculty initiatives are AICTE, UGC, ICSSR,MHRD, DGMS, CMPFO, NHPC, Power Grid, CIMFR, CIL and The World Bank. The department has state of the art classrooms with latest audio-visual facilities andwell equipped laboratories like Systems Lab, Psychology Lab, Work Study Lab, andBusiness Communication Lab. To facilitate classroom learning and research,department has subscribed to leading databases like Bloomberg, CMIE Prowess etc.and advanced statistical software like SPSS with AMOS module, Stata, MATLAB, R,Python etc. The department has been constantly rated as A/A+ institute by the various ratingagencies including AIMA-Business Standard, Business World, Business India andOutlook-C fore. In 2020 the department was ranked at 29th position in NIRF ranking ofMHRD.

DMS offers a full-time masters level program in Business Administration. The course is oftwo years’ duration and is divided over four semesters. Admission Process:Admission procedure for the MBA course involves CAT score (conducted by IIMs) aseligibility criteria along with written test (WAT), and Personal Interview (PI), and isconducted jointly with IIT Delhi, IIT Madras and IIT Roorkee. To be eligible for processshould have obtained at least 60% marks in their Bachelor’s degree and should havestudied mathematics or statistics at Bachelors level.

Course Structure: MBA programme offered by the department comprises of fourteen core courses, eightelective courses, a summer internship component and a thesis component. First twosemesters of the course are dedicated to core courses and practical sessions oncommunication. At the end of second semester, students undergo summertraining/internship at an organization for six weeks.In second year of the course, students choose their specialization, based on which theyselect from a wide variety of elective courses offered in third and fourth semester. Studentscan opt for specialization in following functional areas:

·Financial Management·Operations Management·Marketing Management·Human Resource Management Over the course of second year, students also work on a capstone project under guidanceof a faculty mentor. Report of the capstone project must be turned over before end of thecourse and comprises an important part of the evaluation component of the program.

MBA in Business Analytics

DMS also offers a full-time MBA in Business Analytics. The course is of two years’ duration.Courses in the program are offered by Departments of Computer Science & Engineering,Maths & Computing and Management Studies.

Admission Process:Admission process is similar to the MBA programme offered by the department and isconducted jointly with IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee. To be eligible for process, studentsneed to have a valid CAT score and B.Tech degree in any discipline from a recogniseduniversity/institute with minimum CGPA of 6.0 out of 10. Graduates with B.Tech degreefrom any IIT with CGPA 8.0 or above are exempted from CAT and can directly apply for theprogram.

Course Structure:MBA (Business Analytics) offered by the department comprises on eleven compulsorycourses, six elective courses, lab courses on machine learning, business analytics anddatabase management, an industrial training component and a thesis component. First andsecond semester are entirely devoted to core courses. At the end of second semester,students undergo industrial training at an organization for six weeks. In third semesterstudents work on a dissertation under guidance of a faculty mentor for partial fulfillment ofrequirements under the program. In fourth semester students study six elective coursesfrom a wide array of relevant courses available to them.

DMS offers a full-time masters level program in Industrial Engineering and Management.The course is of two years’ duration and is divided over four semesters.

Admission Process:Admission procedure for the M. Tech (IEM) course is done using GATE Common OfferAcceptance Portal (COAP). To be eligible for process, students need to have a valid GATEscore above the cutoff set for the course. Graduates from any IIT with CGPA 8.0 or aboveare exempted from GATE and can directly apply for the program. Course Structure:M. Tech (IEM) program offered by the department comprises of eleven core courses, sevenelective courses, software laboratory, an industrial training component and a thesiscomponent. First semester is entirely devoted to core courses. Second semester comprisesof four core courses and five electives. At the end of second semester, students undergoindustrial training at an organization for six weeks. In third and fourth semester studentswork on a dissertation under guidance of a faculty mentor for partial fulfillment ofrequirements under the program.

Interaction With OrganisationThis is a platform for interaction between the students andthe company representatives, where information regardingprofile of the company, key aspects of its business, workenvironment and opportunities are made available to thestudents. This is followed by a question-answer session.Companies are encouraged to contact Training andPlacement Cell (TPC) for fixing a mutually suitable slot for aninteraction. Alternatively, companies can share informationabout themselves with TPC through an email if they areunable to visit the department for an interaction. ApplicationCompanies share details about job profile, selection processetc. using Internship Notification Form (INF) which isprovided to them by TPC. Interested students then apply tothe company. Detailed resumes of interested students andany other information requested by the company arecollated by TPC and shared with the company. Studentplacement representatives coordinate corporate interactionand application process. Selection ProcessInternship selection process is conducted over an extendedperiod of time. This gives the companies ample time for anycustomized selection process that may be required.Selection process, including interviews, are facilitatedthrough remote means (video conferencing, Skype, etc.) incase the company is unable to interview students oncampus. Offers and AcceptanceCompanies can make an offer to the student after the finalinterview. The offer should include details of role, location,remuneration and other relevant terms and conditionsrequired by the candidate to make the decision. The offer iscommunicated by the company to the Training andPlacement Cell which in turn is communicated to selectedstudent(s). Acceptance of an offer is governed by trainingand placement rules of the department which are framed atthe beginning of the academic year.

Training and Placement Cell (TPC): TPC acts as a bridgebetween the department and organizations interested inproviding placement and internship opportunities to thestudents. The committee co-ordinates interaction and campusvisits for organizations empaneled with the department andcontinuously strives to contact and empanel new companies.

Media and Public Relation Cell (MPRC): MPRC cellcommunicates major achievements and events of thedepartment to the world through various social media platforms.It also shoulders public relations, event management andwebsite development and management activities of thedepartment.

Alumni Relations Committee: Alumni Relations Committee actsas an interface between the department and its alumni base. Itmaintains an updated database of department’s alumni andorganizes various activities to connect with them.

Consulting Club: The club provides platform for business casediscussions and presentations and helps improve students’understanding of business problems and their possiblesolutions.
