His work is related to computers, he is an IT specialist. However, this does not prevent Gatis to be sociable and friendly. He enjoys sports activities and certainly with his vitality will pull up the audience.

Anžela is a student at Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences. She is 23 years old. Her favorite flowers are tulips and she loves driving cars. Also Anžela is veg-etarian and her everyday life consists of working out and studying. Anžela likes to have a good time with her friends, but in the same time she can spend all day reading or baking.

Kristaps is a fourth year business student who lives by three simple principles which can be summarized in one sentence fun hard working leader. That is a reason why Kristaps has chosen to lead after study clubs, like Vidzeme University Debate Club and Vidzeme Univer-sity Improvisation theater which is a lot of work but a lot of fun at the same time which in the end is totally worth. So hopefully we can work hard and have fun while doing so during the summer school as well.

If by any chance you hear russian music playing, you know – it’s Monta there. Don’t be shy and ask her for a dance, she loves it. Although she will never say no to a good book, seafood or jumping through pud-dles while it’s raining outside. Montas favourite shoes are ones for hiking and you can see fire in her eyes even if you just talk about adventures. Of course, she have high heels as well... but it’s your task to guess for what?!

Intercity transportBusFor travelling between cities or to distant locations an intercity bus service is available. You can catch a bus at the central bus station (Latvian: Autoosta) right across the street from university main building. Tickets are usually available at the bus station or from bus driver. You should be careful and take the right bus or you will end up in the wrong place! For the correct bus check the schedule at the bus station or on the Internet (http://www.1188.lv/transport/bus).

On average there is a bus every hour to Riga that costs EUR 4.75, to other places the price is different.

TrainAnother way to travel between cities is the train. Though slower, it’s a bit cheaper and less crowded. Unfortunately, there is only one railroad in Valmiera so the potential destination points are limited, but it will take you to Riga, Cesis, Sigulda and other places safely. Due to the limited number of trains per day (approx. 4) you have to plan your trip in advance (http://www.1188.lv/transport/train).

For the travel minded people, the railroad also goes to Estonia!

ServicesBanks & moneyLatvian currency is Euros and cents. You can exchange your currency in banks. The usual opening hours in weekdays for the banks are 9:00 –17:00. On the weekends banks are closed. Three largest banks are SEB, Swedbank, Nordea. You can easily find them on the main street of Valmiera, Riga Street.

If you have VISA or MasterCard, look for the ATM near the bank to withdraw your money. You can find ATMs also in or near shopping centers and there is one ATM right next to dormitory where you are staying. Almost every shop accepts credit cards, usually VISA and Mastercard. Most of the shops accept American Express but it is not readily accepted.

PhoneNumbers in Latvia usually consist of 8 digits. It is possible to buy prepaid card for the mobile phone. There are several cards you can buy – “Zelta Zivtiņa”, “LMT karte” and “Amigo”. Prepaid cards are very handy for communication in the territory of Latvia.

ShoppingThere is a shopping center “Valleta” right in the middle of Valmiera. Groceries can be bought in three main store chains – “Maxima”, “Rimi” and “Mego”. “Maxima” is considered to be the cheap-est chain of the three mentioned. Also, there are smaller chains like “Top” and “Austris”. “Rimi” is located next to the University building. “Mego” is located in the shopping centre “Valleta”. “Maxima” is on Nakotnes Street 2, not far from the student hostel. These three are average-sized stores. A larger size “Maxima” chain store is located on G. Apiņa Street 10a. Opening hours usu-ally are 8:00 – 22:00 every day. (Alcohol is sold from 8:00 until 22:00 in shops, while cigarettes are available at a fixed price throughout the day.)

Theatre One of the best theatres in Latvia is located in Valmiera, although it won’t be working during your stay due to summer holidays. But we wanted you to know that we have a wonderful theatre anyway!

Going Out & Eating Out All going-out and eating-out options are marked and listed on the maps of Valmiera you have in your welcome packs. Ask the staff and the Latvian students about the best choices.

Here are just some suggestions: Inside the University building there is cafeteria “Mellene”; Near shopping center “Valleta” are two cheap restaurants: “Bastions” and “Jauna Saule”;More expensive restaurant “Rātes Vārti” is located in front of theatre;Another relatively expensive restaurant is located in Terbates Street 16a, inside hotel “Wolmar”.

It is possible to order pizzas with delivery: “Štoka pica’’ – 64225335, Stacijas Street 1“Čili pica” - 64228558, G.Apiņa Street 10a“La Pizza Veloce – Ātra pica” – 20009119, Rīgas Street 45

Clubs & BarsThere are several bars and clubs in Valmiera. The best bar is “Tinte”. “Multiklubs” provides the opportunity to dance in a less crowded space. For jazz lovers, there is a stylish jazz club “Parks” that organises regular jazz and blues nights with live music.

Beer is relatively cheap everywhere (around EUR 2). Also, cocktails and stronger drinks aren’t very expensive, but it depends on the drink and place. Usually bars and clubs in Valmiera don’t have entrance fees, except for “Multiklubs”, but it depends on the evening. Entrance fee is usually during live performances, but it’s rarely more than EUR 5.

Remember, it is not allowed to be in public place with an opened alcoholic drink. Police pay attention to this prohibition and if you do not follow, you could receive a fine! Also, remember not to smoke in bus stations as it is also prohibited! We hope that you will stay in decent boundaries and won’t attract attention of local law enforcement agencies!
