Grammy Award Winning Pacific Mambo Orchestra Releases New Single
and Video Pacific Mambo Dance Worldwide on March 3rd, 2015
San Francisco, CA - This is Pacific Mambo Orchestras first
international video and single release since the San Francisco Bay
Area sensation nabbed the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Tropical Latin
Album.Pacific Mambo Dance is an infectious, get-off-your-feet group
dance anthem thats destined to become a new club classic and will
be available digitally worldwide on March 3rd, 2015. The video is a
lush Latin dream that opens with joyously teasing instrumentals
(among them, co-lead-ers Christian Tumalan on piano and Steffen
Kuehn on trumpet), then slides into hypnotic lyrics from vocalists
Armando Cordoba and Alexa W. Morales (channeling a retro crooner
during some breakout swing), and is pep-pered throughout with
sultry Latin dance moves. While all this is going on, vibrant
backdrops evoke the lush
colors of the tropics -- with a little Grammy-inspired gold
thrown in for good measure. The single and video is an audio and
visual fiesta for salsa dancers and lovers alike.
2013 GRAMMY Winner the Pacific Mambo Orchestra (aka the PMO) is
a 20 piece musical group leading the rebirth of the Latin Big Band
Sound. The PMO uses the traditions of the classic mambo-craze
orchestras of the 1950s to deliver their original music and clever,
mod-ern arrangements of hit songs. Currently the only fully active
Latin Big Band on the West Coast of the United States, this elite
group of the Bay Areas finest musicians performs in both English
and Spanish, and even some French and Portuguese selections.

PMOs sizzling, self-titled debut record honors the sounds of the
great Latin Big Bands of the 1940s through 1960s, including
Machito, Tito Puente and Tito Rodriguez, while infusing them with
an intoxicat-ing new energy. Richly textured arrangements flow
through the entire production, with exquisite playing by ace
musicians. With a repertoire of mostly original scores, the
selections move in a frenetic pace, pulsing with the sounds,
rhythms and beats that only a true Big Band is capable of
producing.
Their GRAMMY award crowned the PMOs first nation-al tour of
Performing Art Centers in the US. The tour featured Tito Puente Jr.
and was received with great ac-claim by fans and critics alike.
Their musical numbers span many Latin genres such as Salsa, Mambo,
Latin Jazz, Cha Cha Cha, along with a fusion of sounds that
incorporate more modern genres (R&B, Hip Hop). The show also
pays tribute to the pioneers of the classic Mambo Orchestras, all
while paving the way to a bold
new sound designed to reach the next generation of Big Band
listeners.
Also a great honor to the PMO was to be voted BEST BAND of the
2014 Best of the Bay in the San Francisco Guardian Readers Poll.
This Best of the Bay insert coin-cided with the last copy ever of
the 48 year old newspa-per and that issue has become a collectors
item.
The PMO is directed by Mexican-born pianist Christian Tumalan
and German-born trumpeter Steffen Kuehn, each one a highly skilled
and experienced artist in their own right. The bands
instrumentation consists of four Trumpets, four Trombones, five
Saxophones, Piano, Bass, Timbales, Congas, Bongos and two lead
singers, the lovely Ms. Alexa W. Morales and Armando Cordoba.
Powered by a sensational percussion section featur-ing Venezuelan
Timbalero Omar Ledezma Jr., Mexican Conguero Javier Cabanillas and
Peruvian Bongo expert Braulio Barrera, the band also showcases

When I took up residence in La Habana in August 1981, I was
already quite familiar with the Cuban jazz group, Los Irakere.
Having lived for many years as both an undergraduate, as well as a
graduate student in the San Francisco Bay Area, during which time I
vis-ited Cuba on several occasions, I was a devoted fan of many
genres of the islands music. After only a few weeks in the Cuban
capital, I went with some fellow students and health professionals
from the Instituto de Desarollo de la Salud- affectionately
referred to as the IDS: The Institute for Health Development- to
what was to become my favorite of all of the capital citys
cabarets- the one at the Hotel Riviera, located along the famous
Havana Malecon. It was there that I first became entranced by
Arturo Sandovals trumpet virtuosity.
During my year in Havana, I saw this multi- faceted,
multi-Grammy award winning musician play on countless occasions. I
also got to know several other members of Los Irakere- the group
which evolved out of the Orquesta Cubana de Musica Moderna-
in-cluding one who is still my friend here in Miami,
in-ternationally acclaimed saxophonist, Carlos Averhoff. As a
foreigner, I was permitted, in contrast to the vast majority of
Cuban citizens at the time, to travel freely in and out of the
island. I often ran into Arturo aboard flights from Havana to
Miami. I remember well the first time that we ever spoke. As we
both exited the Immigration booth at Miami International Airport,
do these Americans always think that we Cubans all want to stay in
their country Perhaps the now resident of Los Angeles and former
resident of Miami sincerely felt that way about la Yuma- the United
States at the time. However, in 1990, after his wife finally
obtained permission from Cuban authorities to join her husband
while he was on tour in Europe, the couple requested and swiftly
obtained refugee status in the United States.
Arturo was born in 1949 in Artemisa, a small town on the
outskirts of the Cuban capital. Like my own cous-in, the great
Jamaican-American jazz singer Carmen McRae, he initially studied
Classical music, taking up the trumpet at age 12. Also like Carmen,
he soon
became drawn, however, into the exciting world of Jazz, adding
the piano, flugelhorn and percussion in-struments to his musical
repertoire. Although he still often plays internationally with
Classical Symphony orchestras, at his recent concert at the James
Knight Theater in Miami, he was firmly in both a Jazz and,
specifically a Cuban Jazz groove.
I had previously heard that Arturo rarely misses an opportunity
to publicly acknowledge his debt, as well as his deep sense of
gratitude to Dizzy Gillespie. I knew also that, in 1977, he had
forced his way, unin-vited, on board a yacht docked off the Cuban
coast, on which Dizzy, along with Stan Getz, were special guests,
in 1977. These two giants of jazz were to be-come a perfect combo.
African- American Dizzy was a huge fan of Cuban music while Arturo
was, and re-mains to this day, enamored of American jazz. He had
already spent four months in a Cuban jail for listening to U.S.
jazz radio stations- then a crime under Cuban law- late at night,
while serving his obligatory military service.

While Arturos English remains rudimentary and Diz-zie never
spoke much Spanish at all, they communi-cated perfectly through the
eloquent international medium of Jazz. Following his initial
meeting with Arturo, Dizzy was relentless in his efforts to bring
his new friend and protg, whom he recognized as hav-ing tremendous
potential, to the United States. These efforts culminated in 1990,
when Dizzy escorted his disciple into the U.S. Embassy in Greece.
One of Artu-ros most recent albums is dedicated to his friend and
mentor, and is entitled: Dear Diz, Every day I think of you!
Shortly after gaining the cooperation of U.S. Embassy officials in
Athens, this dynamic and versa-tile musician was well on his way to
being both a U.S. citizen, as well as an international super
star.
In 2006, Arturo made a concerted effort to capture the energy of
the many jazz devotees who are Miami resi-dents by opening up a
jazz club at the historic Deau-ville Hotel on Miami Beach. I
enjoyed many wonder-ful nights there, listening to international
jazz greats.
However, despite valiant efforts to provide first class jazz six
nights a week, and to the great disappoint-ment of South Florida
jazz devotees, the club closed its doors after less than two years.
Shortly afterwards, Arturo and his family relocated to Los Angeles.
Dur-ing the Arturo Sandoval and Friends Concert at the James Knight
Theater, however, Arturo exhibited not only his commitment to the
past, but also his devo-tion to innovation and to the younger
generation. Joining him were 3 close friends:

A native of Villa Clara in Central Cuba, where he was born in
1963 Amaury became famous when he left Cuba for Mexico, where he
lived with his family for many years before relocating to Miami.
Like Ar-turo, he is intensely eclectic Grammy award winner,
spreading his brand of traditional Cuban trovadora music around the
world. Also like Arturo, he risked imprisonment while doing his
compulsory social service in Cubas Sierra Maestra by listening in
to U.S. music programs. Not only did Amaury develop a deep love for
Jazz; he also discovered the hypnotic Reggae sounds of the late Bob
Marley. In fact, I of-ten refer to him as the Cuban Bob Marley,
although Reggae is not currently part of his musical repertoire, as
he not only resembles the man who placed Jamai-can music on the
map, even more so because of his trademark dreadlocks, but also
because of his Soul Rebel attitude and his militant commitment to
Social Change and Justice in his homeland. Arturo and Am-aury
treated their captive audience to a taste of their Jazz skat-ing
along with their renditions of several traditional Cuban classics.
Arturo also reminded us that he is still skillful at popular Cuban
dance steps, as he and Amaury transported us musically across the
seas to their homeland.

This star of Miami-based Cuban Salsa joined Arturo and Amaury on
stage on this historic night in Miami. Although only Arturo
explicitly referred to the cur-rent political situation in the land
of his birth, the fact that this concert took place only a week
following the announcement of the thawing of relations between the
U.S. and Cuban governments- after a freeze of over half a century-
gave special meaning to the mu-sical collaboration of four creators
of Contemporary Cuban music, all of whom committed to radical
po-litical and social change at home. Many consider the youthful-
in- appearance Chirino to be the creator of the Miami Sound. He was
actually born in 1947 in the Cuban province of Pinar del Rio and
often emphasiz-es his particular attachment to this western section
of the island, also the birthplace of Beny More. He be-came the
winner of a Latin Grammy in 2007, and the recipient of the
prestigious Latin Grammy Lifetime award. Chirino is also a member
of Los Pedro Pan- the Peter Pans- the approx. 14,000 Cuban children
who left home shortly following the Revolution and were placed in
foster homes in Florida by the Catholic Church. At the time, many
Cuban parents, including Chirinos, feared for their childrens fate
under Castros rule and opted to send their children away for what
they believed would be only a very short period of time.
Unfortunately, this particular night, Chirino did not sing his
poignant hit, in which he describes the trauma of childhood exile,
separation from family and adaptation to a totally different

of little more than a collection of large leaky tires, had failed
them. The balseros enjoyed comfortable accommodations at the
Jamaican- owned hotel, where they were wined and dined for a few
days, before being given a more resilient vessel in which to
continue on their journey. Their luck failed them yet again,
unfortunately, as currents steered them towards Hispaniola, instead
of to the coast of Florida. Chirino came to their assis-tance and
paid for their passage to Miami. It was also through Chirino that I
came to know the black Cuban dissident, Antunez, who spent many
years in Cuban jails for his resistance to the current regimes
policies, thus gaining the nickname of el Mandela Cubano.

The vivacious songstress, musician, composer, pro-ducer,
political activist and talk show host, Albita, whom Arturo
introduced to the audience that night as being: the embodiment of
Cuban music, was the last of Arturos invitees to take to the stage.
My sole complaint about Januarys historic concert at the Knight
Theater was that the sometimes controversial, but unfailingly
energetic and passionate Albita did not grace the stage for long
enough. I first discovered this fiercely patriotic Cuban musical
gem when vis-iting Miami in 1993. This was a period during which
there were particularly large numbers of Cubans risk-ing their
lives to leave Cuba. Many headed towards the shores of neighboring
Jamaica, and several of them introduced me to Albitas riveting
renditions of tradi-tional Cuban folk music. I will never forget
finally hav-ing the opportunity to see her perform, decked out in
immaculate male attire- thus shattering the usual image of the
sexily feminine Latina artist, at least on that and on several
other occasions. That night, only a few months following her
defection to La Yuma (col-loquial Cuban term for the U.S.) at her
concert at an upscale Spanish restaurant in Coral Gables, she was
accompanied by a rocking all- female band. The fact that Albitas
band were all mulata- mixed race or neg-
ra- black provoked more heated discussion among the
predominantly white Cuban audience, than did the fact that they
were all dressed in male attire!
Born Albita Rodriguez, to parents who were well-known proponents
of Cuban folk music, Albita went on to take Miami by storm. Shortly
after I saw her in concert for the first time, she signed with
Emilio Es-tevans Crescent Moon label. Her own production of Albita
llego! in 1995 won 2 Grammys in the catego-ry of Best Contemporary
Latin album. It was as if all aspects of both her body and soul
blended together to produce my favorite of her heart-rending songs,
entitled: Que culpa tengo yo.? - Why should I be blamed (for being
a Cuban)?, recorded several years later. This song touched me so
deeply that it contributed to a radical shift in my position

a Cuban)?, recorded several years later. This song touched me so
deeply that it contributed to a radical shift in my position
regarding the Cuban governments refusal to allow ordinary Cu-bans
to leave the island. The arguments justifying this
discriminatory practice had never seemed very con-vincing to me
while I lived on the island; particularly as I constantly observed
the wives, mistresses and queridas- girlfriends/lovers of high-
ranking political and economic elites being allowed to travel,
while the vast majority of Cuban citizens were not even permitted
to visit relatives abroad. Over the years, I observed en carne
propia-first-hand how this policy directly contributed to the death
by drowning of Cu-bans of all ages and complexions, in the
treacherous waters which divide Cuba and Florida. I remember
defiantly playing Albitas music at salsa parties that I regularly
hosted at my family home in Kingston, Jamaica, at which both anti-
and pro-Castro Cubans often told me that they felt as if they had
been trans-ported back to their homeland. I even went so far as to
allow Albitas defiant lyrics to blast at full volume from my hotel
room when I visited Santiago de Cuba, during my frequent trips
there in the mid-1990s. All
the time, the female State security agent, dis-guised as a maid,
listened attentively at the room door, furiously scribbling
away.
I was, indeed, fortunate to have had the op-portunity to enjoy
the performances of four of the major proponents of Cuban music-
art-ists who may differ in their individual styles and
interpretations, but who are united in their commitment to both
keeping the music of their homeland alive, along with bringing the
vitality and versatility of ever-evolving Cu-ban Contemporary music
to the world. I only wished that all four of them had been brought
back on stage together to conclude the event, but that did not, in
any serious way, detract from this being an unforgettable night in
Mi-ami.

AVENTURA DANCE CRUISE BREAKS RECORDS AND LOOKS TO THE FUTURE
The worlds largest Latin dance cruise announcesthird
full-charter voyage for 2015
-
AVENTURA DANCE CRUISE
MIAMI, FL January 20, 2015 Five years, seven crui-ses, two
full-ship charters, and 8,000 people later, the Aventura Dance
Cruise (ADC) is on to something big. What started as a dance party
for 200 friends on the high seas has evolved into a one-of-a-kind
experien-ce attracting more than 2,000 Latin dance lovers and
enthusiasts each year, and ADC is proud to be at the helm of this
phenomenon.
As the gates opened and enthusiastic passengers clamored onto
the Carnival Ecstasy for ADCs second ever full-charter cruise this
past November, the ener-gy was palpable and pulsating from stem to
stern. The Caribbean-bound journey boasted Grammy award-winning
recording artists, a plethora of world-class dance performances,
more than 60 dance wor-kshops, two private beach parties on
Bahamian isles, themed parties throughout and more than 70 hours of
dancing with several interactive performances. It was no surprise
that once the ADC sailed back into the Port of Miami following the
four-day, three-night extravaganza, guests were lining up to
reserve a spot on the 2015 voyage.
We never imagined this kind of response in such a short amount
of time, commented Moshe Rasier, founder of the Aventura Dance
Cruise. We pride ourselves on developing an itinerary that no other
cruise can match, providing guests with a never-be-fore-seen array
of talent, performances, workshops and round-the-clock party, and
its quickly became our trademark.

REVIEW
-
Aventura Dance Cruise has earned its reputation for placing a
huge emphasis on assembling a roster of talent that is truly
impressive and eclectic mix of top award winning and up-and-coming
musical and dan-ce performances to appeal to and the cruises
various audiences and ages, and ADC 2014 was no excep-tion. On the
musical side, passengers were treated to sensational performances
by Latin GRAMMY-win-ning and Billboard Latin chart-topping
Venezuelan reggaeton duo Chino y Nacho, Latin GRAMMY-nomi-nated
artist Leslie Grace, and legendary crooner Jos El Canario Alberto.
ADC also painstakingly invites a remarkable set of dancers that
have reached success in movies, television and the world stage. As
far as the true star of the cruise, the dancing, guests had the
opportunity to watch stars like choreographer Edwin Rivera, the
only solo dancer featured in the Marc Anthony/Jennifer Lopez 2006
film, El Cantante; Tito Ortos, one of the most accomplished salsa
stars in Puerto Rico, multi-year champions David and Pau-lina,
Karen and Ricardo; and Americas Got Talented semi-finalists.
Our crowning achievement is not only giving Latin dance lovers a
trip where their passions are celebra-ted, but in also converting
those who are new to Latin dance and perhaps unfamiliar with the
genres music into bonafide fans who want to return and share the
experience with friends and loved ones. Its all about the
connection through dance and music, and what could be more
memorable, added Rasier.
Experiencing a growth of more than 30 percent year over year,
ADC is optimistic about not only producing one full-ship charter
each year, but the possi-bility of adding another dance charter
to
its annual roster. As it stands today, ADC is the only Latin
full ship charter, the only Latin dance full ship charter, and the
largest Latin (and Latin dance) cruise in the world.
ADCs third full-charter is scheduled for November 6-9, 2015,
setting sail from the Port of Miami.
ABOUT AVENTURA DANCE CRUISE

destinations during their voyages, welcoming guests aboard from all
over the world. ADC is a social dance network, open for enthusiasts

REVIEW
Jose Luis Jordi La salsa la traigo yo
-
International Salsa Magazine / Mar 2015 71
By: Jos Luis Ordinola

The Mind of a Dancer Short Story Competition
A Writing Competition About Dancing! This competition is the
result of combining two amazing kinds of arts, writing and dancing.
The main purpose of the competi-tion is to explore the mind of a
dancer, and giving a chance for all artists to express their
feelings towards their ultimate passion, dancing, through words.
The Mind of a dancer is a deep wide ocean that needs to be
discovered by each and every indi-vidual on planet Earth.
The false stereotype about dancers needs to be broken!
For all you budding writers out there, spread the news far and
wide around the world!

COMPETITION
The Mind of a Dancer Short Story Competition is about writing a
short story where the protagonist is a dancer, and the purpose is
to reveal how dancers from different cultures, backgrounds, social
classes and gen-ders actually feel, think, and dream. It will be a
chance to share their passion and views in life, men, women,
fashion, politics, media etc. The competition can in-clude
strippers too as a sort of art and dancing. The aim behind the
competition is to break the false stereotype that dancers are just
a facade, or a beautiful woman/man dancing just looking
entertaining and beautiful or sexy or lustful, or that dancing is
related to body weight, flexibilityetc. We can inspire writers to
create new perceptions, and also allow dancers to reveal to the
world who they really are, since apparently not every-one
understand the language of dancing!
How many times per day have you daydreamt and imagined yourself
dancing or singing? How many times per week do you ac-tually dance
alone or with a part-ner? What does dancing mean to you!
Write a 1000-2500 word short story regarding the theme and
kindly send it to us on:[email protected].
DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES: MAY 1, 2015The competition is open for two
age categories (13-18 and 18+). Please while sending your stories
include the following:Email Title: Age, Name, Country, Title of the
Story.Email Body: Phone Number, Date of Birth, Profession/Study,
Address.
The Mind of a Dancer Short Story Competition is founded and held
by two artists who virtually met by chance and decided to blend
their talents to create an inspirational and universal project
through their orga-nizations The Forgotten Writers Foundation and
Rush Studio of Dance. The two artists are writer Mahmoud Mansi from
Egypt and dancer Heather Nesbit Harris from USA.
The winning stories from both categories will be pub-lished in
one book under the name of the award, the authors, and the
organizers.
The winners will also receive award certificates and will be
announced online through www.rushstudioof-dance.com

MUSIC
soni-do plenamente urbano.
10Los
mejores discos
de SALSA
-
International Salsa Magazine / Mar 2015 89
Por: Ariel Ruiz Mondragn / revistareplicante.com
1. Siembra, Willie Coln y Rubn Blades,Fania Records, 1978
canciones grandes: Plstico, Bus-cando guayaba, Dime, Siembra, Mara
Lionza y Ojos. Indispensable para el melmano.
2. Live at the Cheetah, Fania All Stars,Fania Records, 1971
Barreto, Larry Harlow, Bobby Valentn,
Willie Coln, Yomo Toro, Richie Ray, Roberto Roena, Cheo
Feliciano, Pete El Conde Rodrguez, Hctor
Lavoe, Ismael Miranda, Bobby Cruz, etctera. Un trabuco musical
que perge uno de los principales
discos del siglo XX, no me queda duda. A cuarenta aos de su
grabacin, imposible permanecer quieto
Qutate t, Anacaona, Estrellas
de Fania, Ahora vengo yo, Ponte duro y Macho cimarrn.

3. De ti depende (Its up to you), Hctor Lavoe, Fania Records,
1976
guez.

pierde.
8. Thirty Years Vol. 1, Sonora Poncea,Msica Latina
Internacional, 1985
papel tan preponderante y exquisito.
