EDITORIAL

I am happy to announce to our readers that our

attorneys have initiated the process to register

International Salsa Magazine and

Salsamundi.com as a nonprofit foundation.

Within a few weeks we expect to have the

501C3 number from the IRS. This is very exciting

for all of us, because it means that will qualify

for grants. It is our intention to use these grants

funds as stipends for our correspondents. These

stipends will help to enrich the quality of our

content.

I want to thank all the persons who unselfishly

contribute their time and send material to

International Salsa Magazine for publication.

We are currently still looking for more

correspondents.

As a correspondent you are issued a SalsaMundi

press pass, you have the opportunity to

interview Salsa Stars, and inform on which clubs

are currently doing salsa events, what bands are

performing in your area, as well as interesting

salsa websites. We invite you to join our group,

and remember that we are both a monthly

magazine and a blog.

It is also important that our very democratic

policy is to include everyone who is involved

with Salsa and not to exclude anyone.

Members of the Bay Area Salsa Community are

asking themselves “Why did they close Café

Cocomo’s”. Many are the rumors being spread

around and great is the confusion. We have

endeavored to find the answer. It is important

because there are a lot of DJ’s, Bands, Promoters,

Security Personnel, and club employees who do

not know if they still have a job or not, and of

course all of us who have enjoyed the dancing at

Cocomo’s do not know if we have a place to dance

there anymore.

Café Cocomo’s owned by Mr. Daruka Roland

Wanigatunga, first leased the site in 1996 from

Abitsch & Abitsch LLC, a Nevada Corporation

owned or represented by a Mr. Jeffrey Abitsch

from San Bruno, California. Mr. Wanigatunga is

represented by attorneys Scott Leipzig & Mark

Seifert, who have their firm at the prestigious

Embarcadero Center. It should be noted that Mr.

Leipzig is a complex real estate litigator. On the

other hand, the landlord is represented by Terence

Mayo.

In an unlawful detainer action filed in San Francisco Superior Court back in August 9, 2010, it appears that Mr. Daruka was served with a 30 day notice on June 9, 2010 for $29,000 in back rents and the case has been ongoing since then. According to the lease attached as evidence in the court file, it appears that the rent for the first year was for only $500 per month. The second through the fifth year (1997, 1998, 1999, and 2000) rent would be $3,000 per month. From 2001 on, the rent would increase by $100 dollars each year. The club has had its share of problems which include several stabbings, shooting resulting in a death, and lawsuits. At closing time in March 2005, in the presence of San Francisco Police officer David Rodriguez a fight broke out between a Vallejo, African American group and North Richmond, Laotian group. That night 21 year old Justin Mendoza was shot and killed outside Cocomo’s, along with 5 others who were wounded by Gerry Phongboupha. Among the wounded was Phongboupha’s own uncle, Khong. Mendoza’s parents filed a civil action against the club and associates. The shooter, Gerry Phongboupha is presently doing 74 years to life in Pelican Bay. Phongboupha filed an appeal and was rejected by Division Four, First District, California Court of Appeals. The civil case appears to have settled not that long ago, September 2011. The settlement called for a grand total of $1.75 million dollars. In this settlement Café Cocomo is to pay $1,000,000 dollars, K-Dubb Security $500,000 thousand dollars and the landlord Abitsch & Abitsch $250,000 dollars. In an article published by Amy Crawford of the San Francisco Examiner, Amy quotes attorney David Anderson, who represents the Mendoza’s, as stating “Night Club owners cannot just sweep the usual trash down the street. It’s a pretty loud and clear message that if this continues, it’s going to cost them money.” The article also states that it is the insurance company for Cocomo’s who will have to pay out and not Mr. Wanigatunga. Café Cocomo’s did less Hip Hop and more Salsa since the shooting. It is clear that Salseros drink less than Hip Hop, but there are usually no fights. There are many sites commenting on the internet about the closing of Cocomo’s. Some believe that it was because they could not pay the rent. However, for anyone who has frequented Cocomo’s it is simple to see that it is a well attended club, with two and three bars working at a time. If you do the math and use conservative figures, say 500 persons at $15.00 each, the door alone generates $7,500+ each popular night. An anonymous commenter says that Allegro will continue because of their formula suggesting Cocomo’s was not producing revenue. Not the case. The local bands are not really well paid. Pepe y su orquesta says they had to stop playing there because they wouldn’t even pay his 10+ plus member band $1,300 a night.

As to the question if it will re-open, anything is possible folks. The ABC Alcohol License #332687, acquired from Swig Weiller & Dinner Development Company doing business as Masons Restaurant and transferred on October 8, 1998 shows as still “Active.” The history of the ABC license shows that it was originally issued on August 7, 1997 as a type 41, beer and wine – eating place. On October 8, 1998, the license changed to a type 47, “on sale general eating place.” They have to serve food. However, here is the catch folks, the license expiration date is September 30, 2012. One would reason that ABC would require a current valid lease to renew the license. So, the question is whether Mr. Jeffrey Abitsch will give them a new lease. Some folks say the case is still in court, yes that is true. Last Monday Mr. Wanigatunga’s motion for a continuance was granted. However, it appears that it is a hearing only to determine attorney’s fees to be awarded to Mr. Abitsch and his lawyer. If it is any indication, there have been money problems in the past and they were resolved. The case file indicates that in 2007 Mr. Abitsch took an I.O.U., for $12,000 at 8.5%, with no payments to be made until the following year, very liberal. So the chance that Mr. Wanigatunga and Mr. Abitsch may reach an agreement is very possible. Don’t lose your hopes Salseros. There are also the possibilities that someone else may get the lease from Mr. Abitsch. We have heard that there are many trying to see if they can take over the operation, including Tony O, formerly of Roccapulco.

La legendaria orquesta El Gran

Combo de Puerto Rico, anunció su

próxima gira mundial, que

recorrerá más de 35 países para

celebrar sus 50 años de trayectoria

musical. Se presentaran por

primera vez en Corea del Sur,

Singapur, Sudáfrica, Rusia,

Australia y también en seis

ciudades de Japón.

La Compañía de Turismo de Puerto Rico invertirá alrededor

de 1 millón de dólares en la gira de la agrupación, según

informó ayer en conferencia de prensa, el secretario de

Estado, Kenneth McClintock.

"Le agradecemos a la Compañía de Turismo por esta

aportación económica que es muy necesaria y que la

recibimos con mucha humildad. También hay que darles las

gracias porque nos están dando la oportunidad de

representar a la isla más hermosa del mundo: Puerto Rico",

expresó Rafael Ithier, director de El Gran Combo de Puerto

Rico.

El Gran Combo es indudablemente una institución en la

historia de la música puertorriqueña. La orquesta de salsa

reconocida internacionalmente nació como resultado de la

ruptura de Rafael Cortijo y su Combo en el año 1962. Para

ese entonces algunos miembros del ya desintegrado grupo

se reunieron para la grabación de una placa discográfica

junto con el cantante dominicano Joseíto Mateo, resultando

en el lanzamiento de «Meneame los Mangos».

El grupo fue llamado El Gran Combo por el empresario

Rafael Álvarez Guedes, quien fuera el arreglista musical en la

producción del disco. Algunos miembros incluían a Rafael

Ithier, Eddie Pérez, Hector Santos, Kito Martin Quiñones,

Miguel Cruz y Roberto Roena. Su primera aparición pública

fue en el club Rock and Roll de Bayamón, en Puerto Rico.

Apariciones radiales y más tarde de televisión ayudaron a

pasar la voz de que este grupo podía producir salsa de

calidad.

El cantante Chiqui Rivera dejó el grupo y fue, más tarde,

sustituido por Andy Montañez quien gracias a su

interpretación durante una emisión radial cantando una

canción de Bobby Capó ingresó al grupo. Al poco tiempo

Roberto Roena volvió al grupo y permaneció con ellos por

siete años hasta que se retiró para formar su propia

orquesta a la cual llamó Apollo Sound.

En la actualidad El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico está

compuesto por Rafael Ithier (director musical,), Charlie

Aponte, Jerry Rivas y Papo Rosario (cantantes); Taty

Maldonado (trompeta); Víctor Rodríguez y Moisés Nogueras

(trombón); Freddie Miranda (saxofón), Eddie Pérez (saxofón

alto); Freddie Rivera (bajo); Miguel Torres (congas); Domingo

Santos (timbales) y Mitchell Laboy (bongó).

Se puede decir que El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico es y será a

una de las instituciones pioneras en la música latina, han

sido un ejemplo digno de admiración, evolución,

perseverancia y excelencia. Pocas agrupaciones musicales

han perdurado medio siglo manteniendo inalterable su

identidad rítmica, superando los empujes de la industria

discográfica y resistiendo los avatares de la cultura de

consumo como lo ha hecho El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico.

Jairo Varela, the iconic founder

and leader of celebrated

Colombian salsa band Grupo

Niche, died suddenly of apparent

heart failure in his home in Cali,

Colombia. He was 62 years old.

Varela created a signature salsa sound characterized by its

fast tempos, aggressive trumpets and well crafted lyrics that

navigated from feel-good partying to romance and social

consciousness. To this day, tracks like Grupo Niche's hit "Cali

Pachanguero" and "Una Aventura" are forever associated

with Colombian salsa and play in virtually every tropical

radio station and club in the world.

Born in Quibdó, the capital of Chocó, a predominantly Afrio-

Colombian state in the Pacific Coast, Varela grew up

surrounded by music but only began to earnestly pursue it

as a career when he moved to Bogotá and began writing his

own compositions. In 1978, Varela created Niche, a large

salsa band with a big, aggressive sound founded on African

rhythms, together with trombonist Alexis Lozano (who

would later leave to launch his own band, Guayacán). Niche

broke out with its second album, Querer Es Poder on indie

label Codiscos, which included the single "Buenaventura y

Caney," an homage to the coastal city of Buenaventura.

Niche's popularity was consolidated with 1984's No Hay

Quinto Malo, which included the hit "Cali Pachanguero," an

homage to Cali, the city best known in Colombia for its salsa

music and the place Varela called home for most of his adult

life.

As a bandleader, Varela was an anomaly because he didn't

sing or play an instrument. Instead, he composed and

arranged, preserving the signature Grupo Niche sound

through a series of stellar lead singers that included Alvaro

del Castillo, Tito Gómez, Charlie Cardona and Willy García

and Javier Vasquez, who later created another group, Son de

Cali.

Beyond the music, Varela ran his band with military

precision, raising the standards for tropical music and even

fining bandmembers for arriving late to practice. Grupo

Niche toured the world to a degree previously unheard of

for Colombian salsa band, playing Madison Square Garden

17 times and performing over 2,000 shows in the U.S.,

according to Varela.

At the height of Niche's popularity in the early 1990s, Varela

opened a state of the art studio and nightclub in Cali and

was arrested for elicit enrichment, accused of having

received money for performing private parties for accused

drug traffickers, a charge Varela denied.

He would spend nearly three years in a low-security prison,

from where he continued to write, and emerged to a hero's

welcome in Cali and the relaunch of his musical career.

Varela spent several years living in Miami before returning

to Cali, where he was actively working with Grupo Niche,

which continues to tour worldwide. Last May, the band

played a concert celebrating its 30th anniversary.

El cantante puertorriqueño Gilberto Santa Rosa conversa con la AP

MIAMI (AP) — Muchos prefieren mantenerlo

oculto, festejarlo en la intimidad. Pero Gilberto

Santa Rosa desborda de felicidad y ha optado por

gritarlo bien fuerte, para que todos se enteren: el

21 de agosto cumple 50 años y se siente orgulloso

y realizado.

"Me siento contentísimo. No sigo la tradición de esconderlo

porque me da mucho orgullo decir que tengo 50 años. Una

vida muy bonita, intensa, llena de retos y cosas muy

agradables", manifestó el miércoles el llamado Caballero de

la Salsa en una entrevista con The Associated Press.

"Lo más gratificante ha sido poder hacer una vida de tu

vocación", dijo Santa Rosa refiriéndose a su trayectoria de

36 años, tras enfatizar que le gustaría vivir más de 100 años.

Y aunque el balance ha sido positivo en su carrera artística

que ha generado más de 20 discos, reveló que con los años

aprendió que también tendría que enfrentar obstáculos y

que no todo era tan rosado como parecía.

"Lo más difícil ha sido enfrentarse a la opinión pública

cuando no te favorece ... Esto es un oficio. Hay mucha gente

que sí le va a gustar, hay mucha gente que no le va a gustar,

hay gente que tiene una opinión buena de mí y otra que no

la comparte. Fue difícil", expresó el cantante puertorriqueño

de mirada profunda detrás de sus pequeños lentes

rectangulares.

Para festejar su cumpleaños, Santa Rosa ofrecerá en octubre

en Miami el concierto "Ella(s)" junto a la orquesta

colombiana de mujeres D' Cache, y el mismo mes planea

lanzar un nuevo disco aún sin título, que incluirá boleros y

"algunas sorpresas".

Sus planes, sin embargo, no terminan ahí. También prevé

participar más adelante en un proyecto en homenaje al Gran

Combo de Puerto Rico que se realizará en México, y en un

proyecto discográfico de canciones románticas.

¿Y con tantas actividades ya está pensando en retirarse?

Sí. No sólo ha pensado en cómo le gustaría terminar su

carrera, sino que ya lo está planeando.

"Uno va cumpliendo años, va madurando, entendiendo

cosas, y llega el momento en que en realidad hay que irse,

aunque no sea del todo", reveló Santa Rosa en una relajada

entrevista realizada en el James L. Knight Center, el mismo

lugar donde ofrecerá su concierto el 13 de octubre.

El intérprete de éxitos como "Perdóname" y "Vivir sin ella"

dijo que hay un momento en la carrera en el que los artistas

deben "bajar el paso y dejar espacios".

"Estoy trabajando en eso, no con una fecha, pero pienso que

hay un momento dado en el que uno tiene que decir vamos

a dejar que esto pase, vamos a tranquilizarnos un poco y

salir a eventos especiales. Una especie de retiro sin serlo",

manifestó el intérprete de éxitos como "Perdóname" y "Vivir

sin ella", quien también ha incursionado en el ámbito

teatral.

De hablar pausado y pensativo, Santa Rosa recordó que

comenzó su carrera profesional en su natal Puerto Rico a los

14 años, cuando era casi un niño y "veía todo esto como un

parque de diversiones". Asegura, sin embargo, que la música

lo ha acompañado desde antes, toda su vida.

Santa Rosa, cuyo más reciente disco "Irrepetible" salió en el

2010, dijo que ha logrado mantenerse como un destacado

cantante a lo largo de tres décadas por numerosos factores,

algunos de ellos conocidos y otros sin explicación.

Entre los que no tienen una lógica mencionó a la suerte, o el

hecho de estar en el lugar correcto en el momento

apropiado.

Pero también atribuyó su éxito a otros factores que él

mismo ha sabido manejar, y a otros que no han dependido

de él.

"Hay que tener un norte, hay que estar enterado, hay que

tener información y estar caminando mirando hacia el

frente", explicó el artista laureado con un Grammy y un Latin

Grammy.

"Además de eso hay muchos elementos que no dependen

de nosotros: gente que te abre las puertas, gente que cree

en tu talento, gente que hasta a veces tú ni conoces. La

combinación de todo eso hace que uno permanezca",

sostuvo el cantante, que en varias oportunidades hizo un

silencio hasta encontrar una respuesta.

En el concierto "Ella(s)" en Miami Santa Rosa sólo estará

acompañado por otros dos hombres: el director de la

orquesta y la primera trompeta. El resto de los músicos

serán 12 mujeres colombianas que por primera vez se

subirán juntas a un escenario en Estados Unidos.

El espectáculo, que se presentó a comienzos de año en

Puerto Rico, tendrá una duración de más de dos horas y un

repertorio de cerca de 20 éxitos que incluirán canciones

como "Conciencia" y "Mentira". Algunos temas serán

interpretados a dúo por Santa Rosa y seis se las músicas

colombianas.

"Lo que merece la carrera ahora es tratar que dure

dignamente, y defender el espacio que has creado",

concluyó el astro de la salsa, que vive entre Miami y Puerto

Rico. "Ahora está madura, tiene oportunidades".

MEXICO (AP) — Luego de 30 años sin realizar una

gira, la estelar agrupación de la salsa Puerto Rico

All Stars se ha reunido para iniciar una serie de

presentaciones por Latinoamérica, Estados Unidos

y Europa que marcarán un nuevo capítulo en su

historia.

Conformada por 24 músicos de reconocidas orquestas como

Fania All Stars, La Orquesta de Eddie Palmieri, El Gran

Combo de Puerto Rico y La Sonora Ponceña, Puerto Rico All

Stars es el equipo de las estrellas de la salsa boricua. La

agrupación viajó a México para comenzar su regreso a los

escenarios y presentar a sus nuevos integrantes.

"Hay la mayor voluntad de que el público disfrute nuestro

regreso tanto como lo disfrutamos nosotros", dijo el pianista

Papo Lucca a The Associated Press durante una entrevista

realizada en la Ciudad de México.

"Este proyecto (Puerto Rico All Stars) goza de trayectoria,

talento y una gran historia musical, cada uno de sus

integrantes son gigantes en el escenario y queremos que las

nuevas generaciones conozcan la salsa y la mantengan viva",

añadió Lucca, que junto con su padre, Enrique "Quique"

Lucca, fundó La Sonora Ponceña en la década de 1950.

Durante los años que Puerto Rico All Stars permaneció sin

realizar giras hubo cambios en la salsa. Lucca relató que hay

generaciones enteras que conocieron el género musical,

pero no lo bailaban.

"Los que crecieron con el rock, entre 1970 y 1980,

escucharon la salsa, porque sus padres gustaban del género,

pero no se involucraron tanto con ese ritmo".

El músico y político panameño Rubén Blades fue una de las

figuras que logró penetrar en esas generaciones, sobre todo

por su relación con agrupaciones como Los Fabulosos

Cadillacs, de Argentina, y más recientemente con el dúo

boricua de música urbana Calle 13, agregó Lucca.

"Si bien el enfoque que Rubén Blades le dio al género fue

más político y social, al final seguía siendo salsa", dijo.

Por su parte, el cantante Luigi Texidor, integrante de la

Sonora Ponceña y salsero desde década de 1960, señaló que

la salsa perdurará si tiene difusión, pero también si se

mezcla con ritmos más actuales que logren llamar la

atención de los jóvenes.

"Obviamente soy un apasionado de la salsa tradicional, pero

hay que aceptar que vienen otras modalidades y que hay

cambios que se presentan en la música. Afortunadamente

hay muchos artistas jóvenes, como MG2 y Siglo 21 que ya

están fomentando la salsa otra vez", apuntó.

Entusiasmados por volver a los escenarios, los integrantes de

Puerto Rico All Stars celebraron que colegas como la

cantante y presentadora de televisión Deddie Romero se

hayan unido al proyecto en su nueva etapa.

El reciente ingreso de Romero a las filas del conjunto marcó

también su reencuentro con la salsa tras 12 años.

"Tengo muchos nervios de regresar después de tanto tiempo

con una banda como ésta, con gente tan profesional y

talentosa", expresó la vocalista.

Romero confirmó que formará parte de un disco con

canciones inéditas que Puerto Rico All Stars prepara para el

próximo año.

"Estamos en proceso de elegir las canciones que

grabaremos, las cuales son completamente nuevas. No

sabemos cuándo comenzaremos, pero definitivamente será

este año. Me gustaría mucho que en el nuevo álbum

destacáramos la capacidad de cada músico a fin de educar al

escucha con buena música y grandes intérpretes", dijo

Lucca.

El principal obstáculo para la gira y la grabación de su nuevo

álbum recae en las apretadas agendas de trabajo que cada

uno de los integrantes del proyecto tiene.

"Básicamente nuestro único problema se llama tiempo", dijo

Lucca en tono bromista.

Louis García dirige Puerto Rico All Stars, mientras que Papo

Lucca está al piano y Paquito Guzmán, Domingo Quiñones,

Luigi Texidor, Frankie Vázquez, Pedro Brull, Luisito Carrión,

Darvel García y Romero le dan voz a las piezas.

La agrupación iniciaba su gira el viernes en el José Cuervo

Salón de la capital mexicana, para luego viajar al estado de

Veracruz, en la costa este de México, donde participará el

sábado en el Festival Afrocaribeño. Sus presentaciones

continuarían los próximos días en Colombia, Venezuela, Perú

y Estados Unidos.

Los álbumes del grupo "Puerto Rico All Stars", "Los

Profesionales" y "Homenaje al Mesías" fueron lanzados

entre 1977 y 1979. Su cuarto disco, "De Regreso", vio la luz

en 1996.

La banda Puerto Rico All Stars durante una prueba de sonido en el

Salón José Cuervo de la Ciudad de México el viernes 10 de agosto

de 2012. La agrupación estelar puertorriqueña se reunió tras 30

años para una nueva gira por Latinoamérica, Estados Unidos y

La mítica sala madrileña Galileo Galilei acogió un espectacular concierto de la mano de Jaime Vásquez

y su Calle Mora acompañado de José Luis “El Gato” Morán. Tuvimos el privilegio de presenciar el previo

del espectáculo que darían en los próximos días en el Festival Toros y Salsa en Dax, Francia.

Esa noche pudimos escuchar la elegancia del latin

jazz de Calle Mora y la salsa mas sabrosa de “El Gato” Morán. Aunque Jaime Vásquez y “El Gato” ya

han compartido escenario en más ocasiones, siempre logran que cada concierto sea único e irrepetible,

siempre con la misma fuerza y energía. Una vez más, todos ellos nos impresionaron con su gran voz y su

talento al frente de los instrumentos demostrando lo mejor de cada uno de ellos. Entre los temas sonaron

Obra Teatral, Magenta, El Más Chévere... ¡¡emblemático!!, Sentimiento Nacional y Sépalo

Usted, entre otros.

Y como la guinda del pastel sonoro de esa noche, el bailarín cubano Rafa Guardiola amenizó la velada con el estreno de dos coreografías de afrocubano animando a todos los presentes que terminamos

bailando y gozando, incluso con él entre el público.

Tras el concierto, tuve la oportunidad de hablar con El Gato y Marcos “Bolek” Szczurek, su representante, que con su gran simpatía me permitieron hacerles

unas preguntas sobre su carrera.

ISM: MARCOS, ¿QUÉ SIENTES TRAS ESTA GRAN ACTUACIÓN

QUE REPRESENTARÁ LA SALSA “MADRILEÑA” EN EL

FESTIVAL TOROS Y SALSA EN DAX, FRANCIA?

Marcos: Básicamente, lo que siento es alegría y satisfacción

de un trabajo bien hecho, y al mismo tiempo cierta

desilusión, una cierta pena de que no se valore todo lo que

estamos haciendo fuera en lugar de ver lo que se está

haciendo aquí, es decir, sentir el cariño y el apoyo de mucha

gente que ve o se entera de todo lo que estamos haciendo

en otros países para entonces sí prestar el apoyo. Esto lo

digo, no principalmente por nosotros, sino por todos los

artistas salseros que hay en España. Muchos de ellos no

tienen aún la oportunidad de mostrar su arte fuera de

España y lo que necesitan es el apoyo aquí para coger fuerza

y lanzarse al exterior.

ISM: GATO, ¿QUÉ SIGNIFICA PARA TI ESTAR COMPARTIENDO

ESCENARIO CON JAIME VÁSQUEZ Y SU CALLE MORA?

El Gato: En una palabra, MAGIA. Jaime Vásquez y yo

compartimos una escuela que iniciamos en la música, por

caminos separados, pero el destino nos ha unido aquí en

Madrid desde hace seis años y esto es un aliciente en el

momento de hacer música porque se reúnen muchos

elementos como son la constancia, el trabajo, la dinámica, la

seriedad, la formalidad, ser consecuente con un proyecto, en

su caso Calle Mora, y en mi caso José Luis Morán “El Gato

Salsero”. Nos unimos en el camino y trabajamos juntos

intentando dar lo mejor de nosotros y creo que el resultado

se va logrando poco a poco.

ISM: HAS ESTADO DE GIRA POR TODO EL MUNDO.

¿QUÉ LUGAR DESTACARÍAS AL LLEVAR TU MÚSICA?

El Gato: De los países árabes me he llevado una experiencia

tremenda porque, lejos de lo que la gente piensa que allí

sólo se oye música propia de ellos, son unos excelentes

bailarines de salsa y un pueblo muy cercano, que sobre todo

valora un montón, reconoce y agradece lo que se hace en el

escenario. Recientemente estuve en Marruecos, en el II

Festival Internacional Jawhara de El Jadida y me sorprendió

la cantidad de asistentes, más de 150.000 personas, así que

tuve una experiencia tremenda con ellos porque yo no hablo

ni árabe ni francés pero nos comunicamos bien con la

música y lo más curioso, yo no comprendía lo que pasaba

pero se hizo un canto colectivo tan alegre, tan energético,

tan hermoso, y al final me dijeron los organizadores: “Te han

hecho una alabanza del Corán en agradecimiento y señal de

que han quedado encantadísimos con tu música y tu trabajo

en el escenario”. Me quedé con esa alegría y energía y con

ganas de regresar, por supuesto. Entonces, de los países que

he visitado, no hay quien supere a los países árabes, no sólo

en asistencia sino en calor humano.

ISM: TE HAS CONVERTIDO EN UN MENSAJERO DE LA SALSA...

El Gato: Sí, así comentan algunos. Esta noche, por ejemplo,

me encantó la idea de invitar a Karolina Patocki , que es de

Ucrania y ha desarrollado durante años un proyecto

interesantísimo con La Salsa en su país. Algo que parece

increíble pero es una muestra de que para la salsa ya no hay

fronteras y que llega a todas partes del mundo. Para mí

como salsero esto es algo maravilloso, que se formen

bandas interpretando Salsa de calidad en países como

Ukrania es sencillamente mágico y, sobre todo,

¡esperanzador!

ISM: UNA CUESTIÓN QUE NOS PREOCUPA A LOS SALSEROS

¿CREES QUE LA SALSA CARECE ACTUALMENTE DE BUENOS

EXPONENTES?

El Gato: Yo discrepo de eso. Lo que pasa es que, y es

ambiguo esto que voy a decir, a nivel mundial se está dando

a conocer la salsa pero no deja de tener un declive causado

quizás por la crisis mundial que hay. Es muy complejo

porque la salsa es también una actividad empresarial, como

lo son otros géneros musicales como el rock o el pop, pero si

los salseros no contribuyen a ello, es decir, el hecho de

querer ir a un sitio para no consumir, querer entrar

gratuitamente,... eso deteriora el negocio de la salsa, la

fuerza del empresario que está invirtiendo dinero para que

la gente vaya y se divierta pero que consuma también, y eso

hace que los negocios decaigan. Entonces yo no diría que

hay falta de exponentes, sino de sentido común, de

comprender que todos tenemos que vivir. La música es un

trabajo, como cualquier otro, respetable y hasta doblemente

agradecido porque tú en la música te elevas y te animas y

cuando no se reconoce se está deteriorando el proceso. Es

de sentido común saber que todo tiene su reconocimiento y

su valor por lo tanto hay que hacer un esfuerzo y pagarlo.

ISM: MARCOS, CON LA GIRA HABÉIS LLEVADO LA SALSA A

PAÍSES DONDE LA SALSA NO ES HABITUAL, ¿CUÁL ES

VUESTRO PRÓXIMO RETO?

Marcos: El próximo reto es llevar más salsa a todos los

países árabes, y cuando digo todos los países árabes, me

refiero a TODOS los países árabes. Hombre, algunos se están

pegando tiros, ahí no vamos por supuesto, aunque sería

genial porque si bailaran y escucharan salsa seguramente no

estarían disparando, estarían divirtiéndose. ¿A que nunca

has visto a un soldado disparando mientras escucha y baila

Salsa?, ¿a que no? Pero el reto es perseguir y alcanzar lo

máximo: en el mayor número de países posible, con las


mayores audiencias posibles, los mayores públicos

posibles,... Este año, por ejemplo, se actuó en Marruecos

delante de una audiencia que ya hemos mencionado y fue

para todos una sorpresa enorme. Ningún festival en Europa

mete tal cantidad de gente en una sola actuación y eso está

sucediendo en los países árabes, y a esos países es donde

hay que llevar salsa, sabor, alegría y diversión.

Desde el 1 hasta el 7 de Julio 2012

En esta segunda edición del Festival Jahwara de

Julio 2012 en El Jadida – Marruecos, pudimos

contar en la programación con José Luis Morán «El

Gato» Salsero, famoso cantante venezolano

nominado a los Latin Grammy Awards, entre otros

reconocimientos, e instalado en Madrid desde

algunos años.

Con él actuó el Spanish All Star Quintet y como

invitados especiales los reconocidos percusionistas

Jesus Flores y Franck Al Yamine Cohendet,

afincados en Marruecos, además de las

extraordinarias coreografías y animaciones del

bailarin internacional cubano Rafa Guardiola Diaz

« Olofi Son » y pareja artística. De esta manera El

Gato ha traido y promocionado su Salsa «Made in

Spain» en Marruecos, y nos dio a saber un poco

más sobre él y sus sentimientos.

¿ES LA PRIMERA VEZ QUE VIENES A CANTAR EN

MARRUECOS? ¿QUE MOTIVÓ TU VENIDA AL NORTE DE

ÁFRICA?

El Gato Morán: Si, es la primera vez que vengo a Marruecos

aunque siempre ha estado en nuestros planes y en mi

mente. Admiro al Pueblo Árabe por su historia, su alegría,

sus ganas de vivir, su fuerza y por su generosidad. Además

todo el mundo está emparentado de alguna manera pero

creo que nuestra raza latina y la árabe mas aún. Solo tienes

que darte cuenta de la alegría y energía que llenan nuestros

corazones... somos extremadamente parecidos !!!! Todo

esto ha motivado que mi manager hiciera lo necesario para

estar aquí contando también con la aceptación y apoyo del

Sr. Simo Alami, empresario y promotor del Festival Jawhara,

al cual agradezco profundamente la oportunidad que nos ha

brindado.

HAS DESEADO CON FUERZA EXPRESAR TU CARIÑO Y

QUE ES NECESARIO POR TU INTERES CON EL MUNDO

El Gato Morán: Franck, siempre llevo un mensaje de

concordia, paz y apertura en todos mis conciertos porque

creo que es necesario ya que la mente es muy frágil y olvida

facilmente, hay que recordar los valores y principios

mencionados constantemente para vivir en un mundo mejor

donde Marruecos está incluido obviamente. Ya te he

comentado mi personal admiración por el pueblo y cultura

árabes los cuales merecen el respeto y la admiración del

mundo en general pero también me motiva mucho el hecho

de que el pueblo árabe ha dado una lección política y

diplomática a todo el planeta. Para hacer eso es necesario

tener mucha valentía y así lo han demostrado.

¿COMO FUE TU CONTACTO CON EL PÚBLICO MARROQUÍ Y

COMO TE SENTISTE DELANTE DE MUCHO MAS DE 120.000

PERSONAS (LA FUERZAS DE SEGURIDAD QUE SON

MILITARIOS DICEN 200.000)?

El Gato Morán: La experiencia ha sido maravillosa,

sencillamente mágica, propia de esos cuentos que leemos de

pequeños. Fijate que creo que no solo existen alfombras

mágicas voladoras sino que todos los marroquíes son así y te

brindan esa magia sin pedir nada a cambio, es fantástico.

Ya había actuado ante un público tan numeroso en otras

oportunidades aunque lo de El Jadida ha sido incríble, unico

en mi vida !!

EL PÚBLICO MARROQUÍ ES MUY ABIERTO A LAS CULTURAS

EXTRANJERAS LAS CUALES LE GUSTAN MUCHO, TAL COMO

LAS CULTURAS Y MÚSICAS LATINAS, OCCIDENTALES, …¿EN

ESPAÑA O EN AMERICA LATINA SE CONOCE Y SE ESCUCHA

LA MÚSICA MARROQUÍ E ÁRABE?

El Gato Morán: Quizas haría falta mas divulgación y

promoción a nivel internacional. Que no sea considerada

solo como algo exótico o basado solo en los tópicos de

siempre como con la danza del vientre unicamente al igual

que en España tenemos el tópico de las palmas y el

flamenco que es por lo que la mayoría conoce a ambas

culturas. Existen artistas con extraordinarios trabajos

musicales, por ejemplo, que deben ser conocidos y

promocionados lo cual creo que es labor de promotores,

empresarios y gobiernos. Ahora bien, personalmente como

artista, deseoso de aprender y conocer nuevas experiencias,

evidentemente escucho y aprendo de otras culturas y la

árabe es muy rica en matices, en sonidos, en arte. Me

encanta !!

EN TU MÚSICA VEMOS QUE PROMUEVES LA CULTURA Y LA

MÚSICA POPULAR CARIBEÑA Y LATINA EN GENERAL; DE

MESTIZARLAS CON INFLUENCIAS DIFERENTES PERO

COMPLEMENTANDOLAS, TAL COMO HACES CON LAS

CULTURAS ESPAÑOLA Y ÁRABE. ¿PIENSAS QUE EN EL

GÉNERO MUSICAL LLAMADO SALSA ES BUENO INCLUIR LA

MEZCLA DE NUEVOS INGREDIENTES PARA FAVORECER

EVOLUCIONES Y QUE VUELVE A SER UN LENGUAJE MÁS

UNIVERSAL?

El Gato Morán: Todo género musical recibe influencias de

otros y se complementan para no quedarse estancados. Así

ha sucedido con el rock, con el pop, con todos, y eso es

necesario también en la sociedad pues de lo contrario nada

habría evolucionado, seguiríamos vistiendo con pieles y con

garrotes en la mano como los cavernícolas, cierto ?

Ahora bien, hay quienes solo desean los géneros en su mas

pura esencia y en este caso específico la Salsa Dura, La Salsa

Gorda, u otros el Cante Hondo y el Flamenco Puro, y ello es

respetable, por supuesto. Pero también hay que tomar en

consideración la evolución de la sociedad y sus gustos, hay

que tomar en cuenta la experimentación de nuevos sonidos

pues eso si es la esencia, es la creación en el mas puro

sentido de la palabra. Por otra parte el artista no crea solo

para él sino principalmente para su público, para aquellos

que van a sus conciertos, compran sus cds y avalan su

trabajo. Personalmente trabajo y creo para mi gente y si

ellos son felices yo también.

El Gato Morán: Claro que me encanta la música árabe,

quiero hacer fusiones y creaciones en compañía de ella !

Stati es un extraordinario músico, artista seguido por

legiones de fans, y así otros que también estuvieron en el

Festival Jawhara como Rola Saad, Ribab Fusion, Latefa

Raafat, Najat Aâtabou, etc. Son grandes artistas, que

evolucionan, de los cuales aprendo pues esa es la función

básica de un artista... aprender y crear. Sabes una cosa ?, el

género RAI me gusta mucho también y estoy convencido de

que se podrían hacer unas fusiones fabulosas.

¿CUAL ES TU «NÚCLEO CENTRAL» EN TU CAMINO DE

ARTISTA, O DICHO DIFERENTE, CUALES SON TUS REGLAS DE

VIDA ARTÍSTICA, TU CONCEPTO Y TU MODO DE SER? PIENSO

EN TU VIDEO CLIP «PA'LA RUMBA Y PA'L RUMBERO» DONDE

APARECES FRENTE AL ESPEJO Y CON TU CONCIENCIA POR LA

MAÑANA..

El Gato Morán: Mis reglas de vida artística son iguales a las

personales. Honestidad, sinceridad, bondad, no dar nunca

nada por perdido y siempre congruente con lo que digo y

hago. En ese tema musical que mencionas lo digo

precisamente... « Hacer es Decir ». Es primordial para todo

ser humano que se pueda ver a los ojos en el espejo sin

tener que desviar la mirada porque es falso y no cree en si

mismo. Esto es muy importante pues si no puedes verte a

los ojos como pudes ver a los ojos de los demás? Y el amor y

respeto por ti mismo es lo que conjuga todas esas reglas, si

no te amas y respetas a ti mismo como puedes dar amor y

respeto a otros ? Así es la vida Franck y en eso consiste tu

paso por este mundo. Solo intento vivir bajo esas reglas

LA MÚSICA LATINA PERMITE LA EXPRESIÓN DE LOS

SENTIMIENTOS PROFUNDOS: ¿CUALES SON LOS MENSAJES

QUE LLEVAN TU VOZ Y TU ONDA SONORA ASÍ COMO CON EL

BAILE PUES RAFA GUARDIOLA DIAZ « OLOFI SON » HA

REVOLUCIONADO AL PÚBLICO CON SUS MOVIMIENTOS,

ANIMACIONES Y TODA ESA ENERGÍA POSITIVA Y FUERZA EN

EL ESCENARIO?

El Gato Morán: Mis mensajes son basados en la union,

concordia, paz y sobre todo en la alegría de vivir. La Salsa

permite transmitir todos esos sentimientos y aún mas

todavia. Una de las ventajas que tienes este género es que la

música la compaginas con el baile, con pasos ya establecidos

y no basados en saltar simplemente, y en el baile también

transmites lo que sientes.

Rafa Guardiola Diaz, tambien conocido como Olofi Son o El

Médico Rumbero porque su profesión es la medicina, es un

artista internacional con el que llevo trabajando mucho

tiempo. Él no es solo un bailarín que participa en un

concierto de salsa como hacen en la gran mayoría de

conciertos de otros artistas. Rafa es parte del espectáculo, es

de la familia, es mi hermano y confío 100% en lo que hace

sobre el escenario porque es un tremendo profesional que

ha bailado y enseñado el baile de Salsa por todo el mundo,

desde China hasta los lugares que menos te puedes

imaginar. Es incombustible, siempre lleno de energía y

alegría pero sobre todo una gran persona y profesional.

Juntos hemos vivido momentos únicos en nuestras vidas

artísticas con muchas anecdotas y situaciones graciosas

algunas y de grandeza otras. Personalmente creo que Rafa

Guardiola Diaz es único, no hay otro como él.

¿QUE PROYECTAN, CUALES SON SUS DESEOS Y SUS PASOS

FUTUROS AQUÍ EN EL NORTE DE ÁFRICA, Y MÁS

AMPLIAMENTE EN ÁFRICA, PRÓXIMO Y MEDIO·ORIENTE?

El Gato Morán: Mi oficina de representación está

trabajando muy duro, llegando a acuerdos con booking

agents y promotores, así como promocionando nuestro

espectáculo en todo el mundo árabe pues como decía antes

creo que nuestros respectivos corazones son muy similares,

muy parecidos. Tenemos mucho que aprender de toda esta

cultura y que a la vez este aprendizaje sea recíproco.

Marruecos, Argelia, Túnez, el Golfo Pérsico, son lugares a

donde llevar nuestro arte y energía vital, sobre todo ésta

ultima tan necesaria ahora y siempre.

Todo se basa en la constancia y en el buen hacer, la

profesionalidad y la honestidad de los que conformamos

este equipo así como de los que trabajen con nosotros. Me

gustaría crear una formación musical aquí en Marruecos que

nos acompañe por Africa, me gustaría contar con la

sabiduría y el arte de ellos para ofrecer incluso mas creación

a este maravilloso pueblo. Y sabes Franck que TODO

comienza con un « me gustaría », es el primer paso de un

sueño que luego haces realidad con constancia y dedicación.

El pasado 21 de julio del 2012 tuvimos el honor de

romper hielo bailando en nuestras cillas con el

tema musical de apertura el Son de la Loma con la

talentosísima Orquesta Tiempo Libre junto con la

Sinfónica de San Francisco en Davies Symphony

Hall, dirigida por el conductor Michael Francis.

Francis prendió fuego con la audiencia en San

Francisco cuando reto al publico a pararse y bailar

diciendo, “no se comporten como unos reprimidos

sociales tal como los ingleses, díganle al director

que yo les di permiso bailar”. La noche nos deleito

con Mil Años, Tu Conga Bach, Juan Tanamera y

muchos otros temas musicales al igual con otros

temas de su nuevo CD My Secret Radio que está

disponible de venta para su público. La noche fue

todo un éxito y el público los despidió bailando y

cantando al ritmo de Timba y por supuesto

pidiendo más de Tiempo Libre. “Nos fascina San

Francisco porque es una gente impresionable en el

sentido que la gente se concentra en sí mismo y

aquí todo mundo vive a su propio ritmo y respeta a

su prójimo, nos fascina”.

Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall, the concert hall

component of the San Francisco War Memorial

and Performing Arts Center, was built in 1980 at a

cost of US$28 million to give the San Francisco

Symphony a permanent home. The hall seats

2,743 people.

Previously, the Symphony shared the neighboring

War Memorial Opera House with the San

Francisco Opera and San Francisco Ballet. The

construction of Davies Hall allowed the symphony

to expand to a full-time, year-round schedule.

Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and Pietro Belluschi

along with acoustical consultants Bolt, Beranek and

Newman, its modern design is visually elegant both inside

and out. A “cloud” of movable convex acrylic reflecting

panels over the stage enables the acoustic space to be

adjusted to suit the size of the orchestra and audience, while

adjustable fabric banners around the auditorium can alter

the reverberation time from approximately one to two-and-

one-half seconds.

Acoustic isolation of the performance space was obtained by

constructing a building within a building. The outer building

uses one inch thick structural glass as a curtain wall, with the

next structural wall forming the back wall of the lobby

spaces. Passing through a door leads to a hallway, bounded

on one side by the lobby wall and on the other by the

structural wall of the inner building. This continuous hallway

acts as an acoustical isolator and is surfaced with sound

absorbing material.

However, the hall's large volume and seating capacity

initially resulted in less than ideal results. Acoustical

renovations under the direction of Kirkegaard Associates

were completed in 1992 at a cost of US$10 million, resulting

in substantial improvement.

The modifications included narrowing and shaping the walls

above the stage to reduce the volume of space and increase

useful reflections, replacing the cloud of reflector discs with

a more effective array that covers a larger area and is

computer adjustable, pulling in the walls of the floor-level

seating to make the audience area narrower and more

rectangular, adding aisles to replace the former continental

seating, adding diffusing elements in various parts of the

hall, and increasing the “rake” of the floor seating to provide

better sightlines. In addition, risers were installed on stage

to allow the musicians to both see and hear each other

better. These and other improvements enhanced not only

the acoustics but also the hall's beauty.

La Orquesta Tiempo Libre es dirigida por el director musical

Jorge Gómez y se fundó en el 2001 cuando sus integrantes

trabajaban con diferentes artistas como con Celia Cruz,

Cachao y Arturo Sandoval. De acuerdo a Gómez, “en nuestro

tiempo libre decidimos reunirnos para tocar la música que

nos gustaba, y por eso se llama Tiempo Libre”. En ese

entonces Gómez trabajaba con Albita Rodríguez.

Gómez también nos aclara que ellos se identifican como una

sinfónica y no un grupo musical pues sus extensivos estudios

por más de veinte años en los conservatorios de premier de

Cuba y su extensa trayectoria musical a nivel mundial y

colaboración con múltiples sinfónicas les otorgan este título.

Gómez ha presentado con la sinfónica de Cleveland,

Minnesota y Minneapolis entre otras incluyendo la sinfónica

del Canadá.

La Timba es el ritmo musical que toca Tiempo Libre y se

distingue de la salsa tradicional a que al través del tiempo se

fue mezclando con otros ritmos musicales transformándose

en un sonido más agresivo y rápido.

Gómez dice que “la forma de arreglar la música es mucho

más conceptual a nivel armónico, se utilizan armonías entre

Sena, de decena, de novena…normalmente la salsa es el

tumbado más sencillo y tradicional que pueda existir como

lo hace Cachao, como lo hace Buena Vista Social Club,

nosotros tocamos más el estilo de Bamban, de la Charanga

Habanera, del Médico de la Salsa y de Pablito y su Elite…

pero también estamos mezclando la timba con lo clásico,

estamos tocando timba con la orquestra sinfónica”.

Tiempo Libre nos dice que ellos se consideran un grupo

vanguardista e embajadores de la música cubana donde las

sonrisas y el gozo de su público es la mejor paga de la noche

Gómez nos comenta que Gustavo Dudamel es una persona

importante para su carrera musical ya que lo considera

como uno de los mejores pues su talento como

músico/conductor es impresionable sobre todo la facilidad

que tiene de poner la orquestra a tocar música clásica y

gozar plenamente de los aplausos de su público.

Gómez también nos dice que lo más impresionante es su

dedicación personal con la colaboración de Abreu de

rescatar a jóvenes ambulantes de las calles, droga-adictos o

pandilleros ofreciéndoles un instrumento musical y la

oportunidad de vivir un futuro prospero lleno de sueños y

positivismo.

La orquestra espera que el proceso para conseguir la visa de

los artistas/músicos cubanos sea menos doloroso en el

futuro y anhelan un día poder reunirse con sus seres

queridos para compartir sus triunfos, alegrías o tristezas.

Ellos nos comentan que una vez que sales de Cuba pierdes

tus privilegios como cubano y automáticamente te

conviertes en un exiliado y prófugo del gobierno y están en

su derecho de apoderarse de todos tus bienes y

propiedades. Gómez nos comenta que él salió de Cuba

pagando su propio pasaje y con permiso del ejército cubano

para una visita familiar a Guatemala y una vez con la

oportunidad en las manos nunca regreso.

De acuerdo a Gómez, “me quitaron todo, una vez que tú te

vas ellos se quedan con tu casa que ya pagaste, el carro que

ya pagaste te lo quitan, todo lo que está dentro de la casa te

lo quitan…salen mejor ellos”. Años después, Gómez regreso

a cuba utilizando su visa cubana e identificándose como

músico y con suerte no tuvo problemas porque él nunca

utilizo el dinero del gobierno cubano como suelen hacerlo

otras personas a quienes el gobierno les paga los pasajes.

Gómez comenta que siempre la persona tiene que entrar a

cuba con su pasaporte cubano no importa cuántas

nacionalidades suelas tener. Si en algún momento decides

regresar sin algún tipo de autorización por parte del

gobierno cubano una celda fría e oscura te dará la

bienvenida.

La relación profesional y el respeto mutuo es fundamental

para Tiempo Libre pero más aun es el mantenerse unidos

como familia y seguir creciendo y triunfando juntos como

hasta el momento.

Los integrantes nos comentan que “el viajar y presentarnos

en multitudes de escenarios es una gratificación como

persona e músico incalculablemente como todo tiene sus

altas y bajas en el sentido tiempo lejos de nuestras familias e

hijos e esposas”.

Algunos de sus integrantes nos comentan que la soledad

afecta la función del ser humano y la convivencia con ese

alguien especial es esencial como individuo/hombre aunque

algunas relaciones íntimas suelen ser difíciles de mantener

ya que el largo tiempo fuera de casa afecta la estabilidad de

una relación. Pero es allí donde el apoyo de tu otra mitad

viene a cabo.

La orquestra actualmente radica en Miami donde

continuamente están trabajando y colaborando juntos en

diversos proyectos aparte de sus jiras musicales durante

todo el año.

Tiempo Libre también ha tocado en Grecia y Turquía y

actualmente están firmados con EMI quien hizo posible su

presentación esta noche. EMI es un conglomero

multimillonario radicado en Londres, Inglaterra y el Reino

Unido. Los ingresos de EMI del 2010 fueron de

aproximadamente 570 millones de dólares. EMI se ubica

entre uno de los cuatro sellos discográficos más importantes

del mundo. EMI fue adquirida por el banco estadounidense

Citigroup el pasado noviembre del 2011.

Gómez nos comenta que EMI también ha representado a

otros grandes artistas como Itzhak Perlman, Chayenne

Scalaway y René Fleeman.

La Orquestra también participa en varias “clínicas” en varias

universidades donde les enseñan a los maestros a cómo

enseñar la música latina y a los estudiantes a como bailar.

La Orquesta también fue protagonista de una obra teatral en

Miami titulada ‘Miami Libre’ con la participación del actor

principal Juan Carlos Canela. Tiempo Libre ha sido nominado

tres veces para el premio Grammy pero siguen trabajando

duro para conseguir su primera nominación en los Premios

Grammy Latino.

TIEMPO LIBRE WITH SF SYMPHONY AT DOLORES PARK

One of the fine moments I did have this Summer was my MC

stint with Tiempo Libre along with the SF Symphony at

Dolores Park this past July.

The San Francisco Symphony travelled to Dolores Park on a

sunny Sunday afternoon in the Mission last July 22nd. The

community that watched the free show had their picnic

spots set up at the Park. The Mission Cultural Center were

involved in this concert with the Symphony along with the SF

Arts Commission and the McKesson corporation. The

Symphony brought with them a powerhouse of a band with

Tiempo Libre, an exciting Miami based septet made up of

Cuban born musicians who are adept at playing Afro-Cuban

son, timba and salsa.

I was invited by the San Francisco Symphony to emcee their

event at Dolores Park.

I represented KPFA and my program “Con Sabor”. The park

which was packed to the gills by a wide cross section of

people from timba aficionados to the trendy “beautiful”

people to some folks who wouldn’t have stepped on Dolores

Park soil let alone the Mission a decade ago. However since

gentrification has changed the population and landscape of

the Mission, the opportunity seemed right for the Symphony

to throw this free classical music bacchanal. The expansive

staging and sound were top-notch. The Symphony were

dressed in their Sunday best attire. The Symphony were set

up in a u formation on stage while the center of the stage

was set up with Tiempo Libre’s equipment.

The Symphony presented their special program of classical

music with a Latin theme for the first half of the show.

The Symphony started the second half by playing a short

suite before introducing Tiempo Libre. People moved past

the barricades in the large grassy area in the front of the

stage and turned it into a dance floor for the duration of the

set. Tiempo Libre was superb. The band led by keyboardist

Jorge Gomez took the stage and tore it up with their

musically fat sounding versions of timeless Cuban classic

standards such as “Que Bueno Baila Usted”, “El Manicero”

and “Son De La Loma”. The band had a tight and explosive

sound while their vocalist Joaquin Diaz danced and grinded

“a la timba cubana” while he sang his pregones (refrains) to

a happy crowd. The symphony backed Tiempo Libre

sounding like a massive charanga with their string

arrangements.

The fired up crowd brought back Tiempo Libre for an encore

after they played their set of rehearsed numbers with the

Symphony. Suddenly, the band switched to a hypnotic

timba rhythm and the crowd went crazy! The syncopated

sounds of the keyboards, driving synths, funk bass, the fierce

polyrhythms of the percussion locked into the timba groove

while Diaz led a call and response with the excited crowd.

They managed to get quite a few hands in the air at the SF

Symphony concert. A few Symphony musicians who were

on stage dancing in their seats while grooving to the

irresistible rhythms of Tiempo Libre!

Thanks to Louisa Spier and the fine staff at the SF Symphony,

the SF Arts Commission and the Mission Cultural Center for

their support and tireless work at pulling this event off! It

was a memorable afternoon to be a part of this unique San

Francisco happening...vaya!!

The three-time Grammy-nominated Cuban music group

Tiempo Libre is one of the hottest young bands today.

Equally at home in concert halls, jazz clubs and dance

venues, Tiempo Libre’s Miami-based members are true

modern heirs to the rich tradition of the music of their

native Cuba. Classically trained at Cuba’s premier

conservatories, today the group is a hit in the U.S. and

abroad, celebrated for its sophisticated performances of

timba, a joyous mix of high-voltage Latin jazz and the

seductive rhythms of son.

Sony Masterworks released the group’s latest timba

recording, My Secret Radio, in May, 2011. The album pays

homage to Tiempo Libre’s teenage years in Cuba, a time

when the government forbade its citizens to listen to

American music, and Russia pulled its support from the

island. Inspired by their Afro-Cuban tradition, but eager to

catch the new trends and sounds coming from the U.S.,

Tiempo Libre’s members would fashion homemade

antennas and secretly listen to the music pulsating from

Miami radio stations at night. These secret radio sessions

fueled Tiempo Libre’s dreams of living in America, free to

perform their songs and build the careers they wanted,

while helping them gather the strength that it took to leave

it all behind – families, friends, a country, a life – to pursue

those dreams. The CD is their tribute to the many powerful

voices that rocked their world, including Michael Jackson,

Chaka Khan, Gloria Estefan and Earth Wind & Fire. The

album features guest performances by jazz singer Rachelle

Fleming and reunites Tiempo Libre founder Jorge Gómez

with the legendary Cuban songstress Albita. My Secret

Radio, and the inspiring story behind it, has been featured

on Fox News’ Real American Stories, CNN en Español, PRI’s

The World, Mega TV’s Bayly and in Mother Jones and People

En Español. Better TV captured Tiempo Libre pianist and

musical director Jorge Gómez’s emotional first time meeting

with the members of Earth, Wind & Fire, when he recounted

how inspiring their music was to him.

Tiempo Libre’s first recording for Sony Masterworks, Bach in

Havana, was nominated for a Grammy award for “Best

Tropical Latin Album” and featured tracks with Paquito

D’Rivera and Yosvany Terry. The CD, a fusion of Bach with

Afro-Cuban rhythms, reflects the duality of Tiempo Libre’s

childhood days studying classical music and nights spent

playing timba music. Released in May, 2009, the album

received airplay on more than 200 radio stations, was hailed

by Latin Jazz Network as “a landmark recording in the sense

that Miles Davis's Kind of Blue was approximately 50 years

ago” and was selected as a best pick in new Latin music by

The Miami Herald. The group performed “Tu Conga Bach”

from the CD on Dancing with the Stars. In conjunction with

the release of Bach in Havana, the family behind Bustelo

Café – for the first time in 80 years – changed its Bustelo

Café coffee can to feature Tiempo Libre with a free music

download.

In addition to stand-alone concerts, the members of Tiempo

Libre draw on their rigorous classical training and introduce

Cuban music to new audiences through performances with

leading classical artists and orchestras. The group was

invited to collaborate on the duet “Para Ti” with violinist

Joshua Bell, which was featured on Bell’s album At Home

with Friends. The group also performed the track with Bell

on The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, the Live From

Lincoln Center: Joshua Bell @ Home with Friends PBS Special

and on WNYC radio’s popular program Soundcheck. In the

fall of 2008, Tiempo Libre brought its dynamic Afro-Cuban

beat to leading flautist Sir James Galway’s album, O’Reilly

Street, released by the RCA Red Seal label. The album

features an exciting Latin jazz arrangement of music from

the Claude Bolling Jazz Suites including “Baroque and Blue”,

as well as a timba take on Bach's “Badinerie” and a number

of vibrant new compositions all by Tiempo Libre’s musical

director and pianist Jorge Gómez. The result is rich in the

traditions of multiple genres, authentic yet emotionally

seductive, transcending the borders between classical, jazz

and Cuban music.

Tiempo Libre’s musical director Jorge Gómez and University

of Miami’s Frost School of Music’s Raul Murciano

collaborated to create a medley of traditional cha-cha-chás,

sones, mambos and boleros as well as selections from

Tiempo Libre’s Bach in Havana, which the band has

performed with leading orchestras including the Oregon

Symphony, the Houston Symphony, the Cincinnati Pops

Orchestra, The Lexington Philharmonic, The Colorado

Springs Philharmonic, the Austin Symphony, The San

Francisco Symphony and The Cleveland Orchestra.

In March 2012, The Cleveland Orchestra, under the

leadership of conductor Giancarlo Guerrero, invited Tiempo

Libre to develop and launch the bilingual educational family

concert program, Crossings~Travesías, for The Orchestra’s

annual residency at Miami’s Arsht Center. The musical

journey explored the DNA of orchestral musical tradition

from its early origins in Africa, through Europe, to the

Caribbean and Latin America to the modern day concert hall.

The Cleveland Orchestra and Tiempo Libre performed

Crossings~Travesías for over 4,000 Miami Dade public school

students, as well as to thousands of Miami audience

members of all ages. True to Tiempo Libre’s philosophy that

music is not just a way of life, it’s a way of experiencing

living, each of the concerts invited young people to take part

in the rhythmic fun.

In Spring 2007, Tiempo Libre embarked upon the creation of

a new work – Rumba Sinfónica – for symphony orchestra

and Cuban band. The composition, a collaboration with the

highly-respected Venezuelan classical composer Ricardo

Lorenz, was commissioned by the Minnesota Orchestra, the

Detroit Symphony, the Ravinia Festival and the Festival of

the Arts Boca. Since its premiere in Minneapolis in

November, 2007, Tiempo Libre has performed Rumba

Sinfónica with a number of orchestras including: the

National Arts Centre, Dallas Symphony and Oklahoma City

Philharmonic Orchestras and the DuPage, Syracuse, Portland

(ME), San Antonio, North Carolina, Jerusalem Symphonies

and the Hartford Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to their performing and recording careers, the

members of Tiempo Libre are particularly committed to the

sharing of their rich musical traditions through outreach and

educational activities and have participated in artist in

residence programs at Michigan State University,

Interlochen Academy, Indiana University and with the

Cleveland Orchestra. The group has also become known for

its inspiring classes on rumba, Latin jazz and traditional

Cuban music, designed to reach audiences of all ages and

backgrounds.

Following up being named “Best Latin Band 2008” by the

Miami New Times, Tiempo Libre brought a true Cuban

experience to its American home-town of Miami, with the

interactive musical production Miami Libre, which

premiered at The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing

Arts in July, 2008, featuring a cast of 25, including Tiempo

Libre’s seven members. Miami Libre, based on the band’s

collective immigrant experience, is told through English and

Spanish narrative, sizzling music and explosive dance.

Tiempo Libre’s members were all enjoying thriving careers in

Latin music performing, touring and recording with such

artists as Albita, Cachao, Arturo Sandoval, NG La Banda,

Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Isaac Delgado, when the seven

extraordinary musicians came together to realize their

collective musical dream: to create the first authentic all-

Cuban timba band in the United States. Their eagerness to

share their music with others led these multi-talented

individuals to come together between projects to develop

their new style together, hence the name Tiempo Libre (Free

Time).

Since their formation in 2001, the members of Tiempo Libre

have been on a mission: to share the musical heritage in

which they grew up with as wide an audience as possible,

reinterpreting and reinvigorating traditional Cuban music

with a youthful, modern sound and forging a new style born

from the meeting of their Cuban roots and their new

American experience. In Summer 2002, at the group’s

Ravinia Festival debut opening for Celia Cruz, Tiempo Libre

dazzled a crowd of more than 12,000 people. They were

quickly reengaged by Ravinia for Summer 2003, where they

shared a bill with Aretha Franklin, performing before an

enthusiastic crowd of 20,000 and have returned to the

Festival four additional times. Summer 2003 also included

performances at the new Heineken Jazz Festival in Hua Hin,

Thailand where Tiempo Libre were the undeniable sensation

of the Festival. Return trips to Asia have included sold out

shows at Hong Kong’s Kwai Tsing Theatre and the Dewan

Filharmonik Petronas in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as well as

concerts for the Java Jazz Festival in Jakarta, Indonesia, the

Singapore Sun Fest and the Gwangju World Music Festival in

South Korea. The group has brought its dynamic sound to

the international stage with concerts at places including the

Jerusalem Theater, the Tel Aviv Opera House, Istanbul's İş

Arts and Culture Center, Adelaide Festival Centre and

Guatemala’s Festival Internacional De Cultura Paiz, In 2011,

the band was delighted to perform at the Divino Tuscany

Festival’s closing ceremony, held at the Italian villa of Sting

and Trudie Styler, who joyously danced to Tiempo Libre’s

music. August, 2005 brought Tiempo Libre’s European

debut. Among the highlights of that tour, was Tiempo Libre’s

performance at the closing concert of the new Tuscan Sun

Festival in Cortona, Italy where the band wowed a sold-out

house.

The group’s busy touring schedule in the United States has

included performances at the Playboy Jazz Festival at the

Hollywood Bowl, Miami’s JVC Jazz Festival, Yoshi’s in

Oakland, CA, SOB’s in New York City, The Metropolitan

Museum of Art, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Celebrate Brooklyn,

New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Festival

International de Louisiane, Rochester International Jazz

Festival, the Royal Conservatory in Toronto, the Lincoln

Theater in Napa Valley, Boston’s Sculler’s Jazz Club, Society

of the Performing Arts in Houston, the Kimmel Center,

Orange County Performing Arts Center, California Center for

Lotus Music Festival, New York’s River-to-River Festival, as

In January 2005, Tiempo Libre released its debut album on

the Shanachie label – Arroz con Mango – which was both a

tribute to the deep Cuban roots of Tiempo Libre’s members

and a celebration of their new life in the US.

Received with universally glowing reviews, Arroz con Mango

received tremendous atte ntion in the press and was

featured in numerous national publications including Latin

Beat and Hispanic Magazine and NPR’s Latino USA. Fulfilling

the meaning of its title (“arroz con mango” is a Cuban slang

expression meaning something completely out of the

ordinary), the album was nominated for a 2006 Grammy

Award in the category of “Best Salsa/Meringue Album.” One

year later, the band released Lo Que Esperabas – What

You’ve Been Waiting For. And, once again, its title proved

prophetic when the group was nominated for its second

Grammy, this time for “Best Latin Tropical album.”

Tony Succar was born in Lima, Peru on May 18th , 1986. At

the age of two he arrived to the States, residing in Miami, Fl.

Being surrounded by a family talented with the gift of music,

Tony pursued his musical career when he was 13. “I was

privileged to have been born into a family of musicians, I

couldn’t be more grateful”, he explained.

Succar was inspired to begin his musical education on the

piano and then moved on to percussion.

Tony received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Jazz

Performance from Florida International University in 2008

and his Master’s degree in 2010.

He has been privileged to work with artists such as Arturo

Sandoval, Néstor Torres, Tito Puente Jr., Gilberto Santa Rosa,

Oscar de Leon, Tito Nieves, La India, and Tito Rojas (among

others). Growing up in Miami, a multi-cultural “Melting Pot”,

has shaped him in many ways to become a versatile

musician. Being exposed to so many diverse styles of music

has blessed him to make the most of his talent.

Tony Succar is blessed to be well versed in a number of

musical roles- as a percussionist, musician, producer,

composer, and arranger. Whether in a timbales solo, an

orchestration, or an explosive groove, Succar’s sound is

clearly distinctive. He always manages to exceedingly

accommodate for the interests of both the musicians and

dancers. However, most importantly, Tony has always had

the ability to entertain while foremost maintaining his

musical integrity.

His compositions emphasize the combination of

syncopation, harmonic curiosity, rhythmic uniformity, and

tasteful melodies. Through his unique arrangements and

charisma he is able to break the mold and create

masterpieces that are enticing for all.

Tony’s debut album (CD/DVD) , “Live at the Wertheim

Performing Arts Center”, received excellent reviews from

the media, stating “An exciting fusion of South America,

Cuba, Jazz and South Beach flavor from an up and coming

artist who will almost certainly be heard from more in the

future.” - Jazz Chicago Reviews. It has exceptional musical

quality embodying 3 explosive arrangements of classic jazz

songs: “Eye of the Hurricane”, “Adam’s Apple”, “Bensha

Swing”. The album also includes Succar's original

compositions entitled “Pa Oyichan”, “A MiManera” and “No

TeConfundas”, performed all live by Tony Succar and his 13

piece band Mixtura.

This Young artist has been influenced by excellent artists like

Tito Puente, Fania All-Strars, Irakere, Juan Luis Guerra,

Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, Perú Negro,

among others.Like them, Tony wants to impact the world

with his music, growing with different styles. His goal is to

compose music that attracts dancers and people who

appreciate his music.

Tony Succar started creating the Unity Project in 2009,

Through UNITY “The Latin Tribute to Michael Jackson”,

Succar remerged fourteen of Michael Jackson’s greatest hits

into Latin/Tropical Pop fusion. The bilingual renditions of

these classic hits represent a unity of between American and

Latin Culture.

Tony Succar has created The UNITY Project with an

exceptional production team and featured artists. This

project is not like anything that has ever been seen or heard.

It is truly unique to the mind, ears and hearts of any

audience. Michael Jackson’s music influenced Tony’s life and

ignited his musical ideas and passion to an extraordinary

level. As a result he has created an innovative sound that

interconnects the elements of American Pop, Jazz, Salsa, and

World Music into the enduring foundations of the King of

Pop.

Jackson, the King of Pop, by remaining true to his artistic

Three years ago, Michael Jackson’s unexpected death shocked fans around the globe. Among the mourners was FIU School of Music alumnus and Artist-in-Residence Tony Succar ’08, MA ’10 who poured his personal despair over the loss of his idol into a stunning tribute album unlike anything the music world has ever heard.

Succar embarked on a musical journey to honor the life and legacy of the King of Pop. He began by recomposing Jackson’s iconic hits and infusing them with Latin rhythms, Jazz, World Music and American Pop. He then enlisted more than 80 musicians to bring his music to life, including world-renowned Latin recording artists Tito Nieves, La India, Obie Bermúdez and Jennifer Peña. The result is a 14-song album called, “Unity: The Latin Tribute to Michael Jackson.” Succar’s compositions remain true to the essence and foundation of the original songs. He found parallels in the rhythms and weaved in tropical arrangements and Latin percussion, essentially uniting musical cultures, fans, and genres. The first single of the album will be released next month and the album scheduled for release in the fall. The first single, “I Want You Back,” features the vocals of Salsa mega-star Tito Nieves. The tropical version of the Jackson 5 classic has already received airplay on major stations nationally in New York, Florida and Puerto Rico and internationally in Peru. The single is set to drop worldwide on iTunes August 21.

My name is Tony Succar. I’m the creator and founder of the

UNITY project. Thanks so much for dropping in! I feel

extremely blessed to be here today officially kicking off this

amazing project to the world!

Just like you, three years ago on this exact date— June

25th—I sat in disbelief, dumbfounded, experiencing one of

the most traumatic moments in my life.

“Michael…Michael…Michael… “(not Michael Jackson, not

MJ) “No… Michael, no…”

You know the feeling. You were there, too, if you had access

to the news and watched it play out.

I just couldn’t believe what was happening. Michael Jackson

was … gone? … just as he was about to explode onto the

world stage again, bringing us his passion and sensitivity—

and a renewed sense of hope and possibility?

I never got to meet him or see him in concert, but he was a

HUGE part of my life. Michael Jackson created the

soundtrack of my life. I come from a family of musicians, so

music was always playing in my house. I grooved to

everything (it’s what a percussionist does!). But every time a

Michael song happened, it was a happening. I would freeze

as the lyrics and rhythms penetrated my soul. I knew that

Michael was a once-in-a-lifetime special gift from God.

I can go for days, weeks, months, talking about how I admire

his music. I can also go on about how I admire the Jacksons

and all the geniuses who worked with them: the musicians,

producers, Quincy Jones, Bruce Swedien, Seidah Garrett, and

more. But there’s one thing I need to highlight right now:

the immense impact that Michael’s messages had on my life.

His odes to love, respect, reflection, earth consciousness,

and unity inspired me, changing my life forever. The legacy

Michael has left us is one I cherish, embrace, and intend to

mirror for as long as I live.

A couple of months after his passing, I felt an unquenchable

urge to pay homage to Michael’s legacy. I had no idea what I

was going to do, or how I was going to do it; I simply knew I

needed to follow my heart. God gave me a gift and blessed

me with the path I’m on now to create a special project that

has segued from a farfetched fantasy to an astonishing

reality.

It has taken more than two years of 24/7/365 work— that’s

the cost of spinning realities with gossamer strands of

passionate love for a worthy goal. I’ve spent countless hours

listening, transcribing, arranging, recording, and editing

(that’s the fun part!) while juggling the few financial

resources I have to make this project happen independently

(most of you remember and helped during my kickstarter

days!) and all of the other challenges that have come up

during this incredible journey.

My goal with the album has been to embody Michael’s

essence by focusing this Tribute on his message of UNITY. I

wanted to expand on his message by interpreting his music

in a new way; in a way where I express myself fully, because

expression is in my Latin DNA. I simplyhad to getthis right!

I’ve formed TEAM UNITY, an array of mind-blowingly

talented people who love Michael and cherish his legacy

every bit as much as I do. We’re all a big family now, focused

on embracing his message and showing the world how

important Michael’s music and spirit still is to all of us.
