Women in ManagementClub Meeting (15.00 hrs)

The WIM meeting wasvery inspiring. We planneda co-sponsored panel with the

Sustainability club onwhether women are more

sustainable leaders. We areasking three RSM alumni –

an FMCG CMO, a partnerin Strategy Consulting and

a banking Chief ComplianceOfficer – to be panelists.

Strong Dutch coffee! An essential part ofthe morning ritual...

Last Minute Shopping – Rotterdam City (17.00 hrs)I promised Deeptha and Monica to help them withtonight’s party decoration and snacks; so I wentto the city centre to do the last minute shopping. Fortunately, I found everything we needed.  Spring Party (21.00 hrs)The spring party was amazing! We danced all night and had a lot of fun.I cannot even imagine how fun it’s goingto be at the Latin Party next week!

Strategy Class (9.30 hrs)

The case that we had to analyse and discuss for

today’s lecture was on Google’s rise to the top

and the challenges and strategic choices it faces

in the future. A very interesting case further

enriched by the class discussion, my colleagues’

experiences and the professor’s insight from his

consulting days at McKinsey.

Lunch Meeting (12.30 hrs)

I had lunch with my team in the Café. We

finished the Strategy presentation that we have

to deliver next Monday. At the end, I think we

achieved a very good result as each one of us

contributed with their own cultural experience.

Speed Interview (13.30 hrs)

The speed interview exercise was really

worthwhile. The interviewer was a real

recruiter, so I received some tips and feedback

from him that will help me to be much better

in my real future interviews.

Alumni Mentoring Session (16.00 hrs)

Met with my alumni mentor, a marketing

strategy executive, to discuss which

elective courses would most benefit my

future in strategy. Her insights are

always so inspiring as well as relevant!

PERSONAL LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT (PLD)

HOW CAN I FIND THE SKILLS

to inspireand engage?

Nowhere will you find an MBA programme more focusedon developing your abilities as a future leader, nor as manyopportunities to apply them in practice.

TheoryLeadership development helps you to understand howto build and manage relationships. At the core of yourMBA is the Personal Leadership Development Programme,a dedicated course that runs throughout the year to developyour knowledge of the drivers of human behaviour andthe thinking behind the action. You will learn how tocommunicate your ideas, engage and motivate othersand connect with peers and team members.

PracticeIn class, you confront and evaluate the assumptions onwhich your ideas are based, gaining the ability to think foryourself and go beyond conventional wisdom to generateworld-changing ideas. You also gain the personal influenceto turn these ideas into actions. Intensive workshops andinteractive sessions help you to identify ways in whichto build on your strengths and mitigate your weaknesses. Group work, case studies, in-class exercises and discussionshelp you to reflect on your attitudes and behaviours.Receiving feedback from your peers will give you anopportunity to re-examine your actions with the prospectof improving your personal skills in a low-risk environment.

AT RSM WE BELIEVE THAT LEADERS

ARE BORN – AND THEN THEY ARE MADE.

CAN MY MBA HELP BUSINESS TO

be sustainable OR IS IT ALL ABOUT PROFIT?

‘The corporate world, having recognised that the triple bottom line

(People, Planet and Profit) determines a company's health, is focused

on sustainability as a game changer. Thus, sustainability will be an

integral part of my career as it is at the very core of decision-making.

RSM incorporates sustainability as an intricate part of all MBA subjects.

It’s not just a standalone topic, but it weaves through the whole

experience, both in class and beyond. RSM has given me a full 360

degree view of the topic and I can already see it’s making a positive

impact on what I’m achieving at work.’

“The RSM MBA allowed me to learn the

essential tools of business and to gain fluency in

the important language of executive management.

A well-regarded brand, my affiliation with RSM

helped to nudge the door open for me to land my

first post-MBA position at a leading international

bank. While ten years later it is much more about

consistently delivering results (and a few strokes

of good luck) than the origins of my graduate

degree, I'm quite certain that I would be in a very

different professional place today had I not taken

part in the RSM experience. But in the end, it is

the enduring bond and friendship with many of

the talented colleagues with whom I studied that

remains most with me today.”

“The essence of strategic thinking is not just to be forward-looking.

It is the ability to look around corners and anticipate the unexpected.

My idea of the perfect MBA strategy class is one in which all world views

are challenged, and in which new ones are developed and probed on the fly.

So, buckle up, and join me for the ride!”

Pursey Heugens

Professor of Organization Theory and Chair of the Department of Strategic

Management and Entrepreneurship, RSM

“The core idea behind my course Comparative Corporate Governance and

Enterprise Organisation is that each organisational form faces its own specific

corporate governance challenges, and that these challenges require equally

specific corporate governance practices to be met succes fully. In our MBA

programme, this theoretical premise is infused with practical value through

the experience and diverse back ground of the students, which enables a

quality of discussion that is as rewarding to me as it is to the students.”

Hans van Oosterhout

Professor of Corporate Governance and Responsibility, RSM

“A key gap in management knowledge is developing sustainability strategies

and implementing them. At RSM, we study how companies can develop

and implement strategies, and be part of the solution to climate change.

Students have to learn about the bottom line, but they also learn about ecology,

appreciation of natural environments, and how companies use natural

resources.”

Gail Whiteman, Associate Professor,

Director of the Sustainability and Climate Research Centre, RSM

“For me, leadership is about developing a clear vision of our strategy

and communicating it to stakeholders. As Dean of RSM, I want to step

up the pace at which we nurture our alumni and corporate relations. I

am committed to ensuring that our research is a source of impactful

knowledge and education that addresses specific managerial challenges.

This means leading by example and using the principles of servant

leadership, rallying support throughout the school, as well as inspiring

and motivating people so that we are able to execute the strategy.”

Steef van de Velde, Dean, RSM

“Leadership is currently a much used word. At RSM our goal is to clarify what

true leadership is and assist our participants in developing themselves as

successful and strong leaders for the future global economy. We focus on

inspirational and motivational skills so that they learn how to effectively

lead others, give them the opportunity to experience being comfortable with

being uncomfortable in challenging situations, and creating opportunities

to access their visionary and creative skills in order to be able to think in

the long term as opposed to focusing too much on the short term.”

Dianne Bevelander, Associate Dean MBA Programmes, RSM

“In an increasingly interconnected world, variety and diversity are growing

exponentially and so are differences in views and interests. This growth

creates both threats and opportunities for all future leaders. Leadership

in this new era will focus less on function and process and more on

inspiring people to bring the best of their diversity together to create

results that are valuable. These new leaders will also re-define value

from a multi-stakeholder point of view. The impact of these leaders will

be an evolutionary leap in the way companies do business.”

Jaap Spronk, Academic Dean MBA Programmes, RSM
