Green Design & Retrofit Renovation
#nafnext
Green Design Unit Overview• Subunit 1: World in Balance – This subunit introduces the
unit and deeply explores issues driving the need to “green” the architecture and building trades
• Subunit 2: Project Planning – Students research factors important to building design and reconcile client wishes with project parameters
• Subunit 3: Going Green – These lessons provide students with large view of responsibility regarding resource management and also information on how to improve the performance of their final building design

Green Design
• Desire to go “Green”• Save money• Smart/wiser choice
Chamber
• Building across the street from school
• Opportunities: manage/oversee progress
• Work closely with members of Chamber.
• Received permission from Ron from Chamber to proceed.
Steps
• Research:– LEED appliances– Adjustments for building– Furniture and interior design
• Commenced writing proposal
• Constructed model of building to see what needs to be modified
Research
• Visited green Campuses to collect ideas– FIU Hurricane center– Claude Pepper Park recreational center– Researched UM green building
• Conversed with other engineers• Took measurements from Chamber• Contacted other contracting companies
Interior Design and Aesthetics
• More stimulating environment means more stimulated workers which means more productivity.
• Maintain peaceful atmosphere• Interior Garden
Exterior Design
• Plants native to South Florida region• Changes to building to facilitate green
innovations– Water system– Solar panels
• Maintain aesthetics
Replacements and New Members
• Jesus Hernandez and Ashley Figueroa have graduated
• Search for more replacements
• New members: Malcolm Edmund and Tanisha Felix
• Looking for more to assist our team
Challenges
• Outside businesses doing business with students; reluctant
• Cooperating with each other– Waiting on each other in order to take the next
essential progression step
Thank you
• We look forward to the completion of this project towards the end of next school year
