As a result, individuals and businesses may be tempted to use a student-athlete’s name, image, or likeness to promote themselves or their businesses for financial gain or notoriety. Though it may have the best of intentions, even producing and distributing t-shirts free of charge is contrary to NCAA rules if the shirts includes the image of a current UCLA student-athlete. All Bruin supporters and fans need to know that: 1) The use of a current UCLA student-athlete’s name or likeness on commercial items offered for sale or for advertising or promotional purposes is impermissible under NCAA rules and can jeopardize the student-athlete’s athletic eligibility; 2) NCAA rules prohibits the use of a student-athlete’s name, photograph, likeness, or reputation to promote a commercial product or service of any kind; and 3) When a student-athlete’s name, image or likeness is used without the student- athlete’s knowledge or permission, NCAA rules require the student-athlete (or UCLA acting on behalf of the student-athlete) to take steps to stop that activity in order for the student-athlete to retain his or her eligibility. As UCLA supporters, we remind you to avoid these types of impermissible usages when promoting a business or personal interest, including a show of support for UCLA student-athletes on social media. As always, we encourage you to “ask before acting” and thank you for your role in helping protect our student-athletes control of their image and their eligibility. The invaluable resources and support student-athletes receive at UCLA is second to none. The opportunity to strive for greatness in the classroom and in my sport has been made possible through the continued support and contributions of UCLA’s donors. If not for our loyal donors, I would not have enjoyed all the great experiences that I’ve had during my time at UCLA and I thank all of you for your support.” Initial goal of $260 million has been reached, and a new goal of $300 million has been set With more than a year and a half remaining in UCLA’s $4.2 billion Centennial Campaign, UCLA Athletics has officially surpassed its initial goal of raising $260 million, and has now set its sights on securing $300 million in private funds by the end of 2019, UCLA’s 100th anniversary year. UCLA’s Centennial Campaign, which began in 2013, is laying the foundation for a financially-sustainable future and building upon UCLA Athletics’ standing as the premier intercollegiate athletics program in the country. Funds raised by UCLA Athletics during the Centennial Campaign have already seen tangible results, including the addition of 96 new Four Deep Scholarship Endowments, the building of new facilities like the Wasserman Football Center and Mo Ostin Basketball Center, improvements and renovations to existing facilities such as Drake Stadium, Easton Stadium, Jackie Robinson Stadium, Pauley Pavilion, Yates Gym, and the Acosta Athletic Center, and expansion of academic and student support services, student-athlete mental health support system, and the Student-Athlete Development Program. UCLA ATHLETICS SURPASSES CENTENNIAL CAMPAIGN GOAL CLICK HERE TO SEE OUR UCLA ATHLETICS DEVELOPMENT STAFF Choose one block in Coach Wooden’s Pyramid of Success and share why it is meaningful to you. Nathan Anderson: “The most meaningful block to me is ENTHUSIASM. In order to be successful in all aspects of life you must be enthusiastic is all things you do. Through all of life’s ups and downs I truly believe that if you remain enthusiastic the other “blocks” will fall into place.” Neema Barbod: “’TEAM SPIRIT – A genuine consideration for others.’ Coach said, “selflessness is the opposite of selfishness.” This really resonated with me because it reflects good leadership and teamwork. If you commit every single day to help others succeed then you become a great leader and your team accomplishes their goals.” Gina Garrett: “POISE – I’m a big fan of stress-free wholesome living made possible by having no guile and knowing that you are encouraged to be yourself. As a group, a safe environment results in an open forum that yields the best results derived from honest responses and at the same time, the individual wins as well as he/she is allowed the best opportunity to blossom personally.” Alicia Junker: “While my favorite block within Coach Wooden’s Pyramid of Success is Industriousness, as I am a firm believer that there is no replacement for hard work, the most meaningful block to me is CONFIDENCE. I have learned that while anyone has the potential to work hard, having confidence in your ability to work hard and succeed in that work is absolutely imperative to reaching your goals.” Kat Lauer: “INDUSTRIOUSNESS. Its simple message has stuck with me; there is no substitute for hard work in any goal you set in life. I believe its importance is evident in why John Wooden placed it as a cornerstone in the pyramid and I like to think about being relentless when things get tough. Put your head down and push forward.” Emily Lerner: “Coach Wooden’s block, ‘FRIENDSHIP: Comes from mutual esteem, respect and devotion...it must not be taken for granted...’ I have learned to never take friends for granted; they should be cherished always. If you form friendships in the workplace, it can only have positive impacts on everything you and your colleagues seek to do.” Jill Machuca: “LOYALTY: Being loyal means keeping your word, being truthful, reliable, helpful and honest.” Parker Poliakoff: “The block “ENTHUSIASM” in Coach Wooden’s Pyramid of Success is one of the most meaningful blocks to me. I believe that having enthusiasm in everything you do is infectious and helps boost team morale and productivity. Enjoying what you are doing is vital for sustained success. I try and be enthusiastic in everything I do!” Josh Rebholz: “ENTHUSIASM, defined in the Pyramid of Success as: “Brushes off upon those with whom you come in contact. You must truly enjoy what you are doing.” I think having passion for what you do will not only improve production, enhancing your organization, it will motivate those around you and will allow for a more enjoyable life!” Zack Rosenfeld: “ENTHUSIASM: As our great UCLA Gymnastics Head Coach Valorie Kondos-Field says, having the spirit of “Getting to” do things versus “Having to” do things makes a world of difference and perspective. I feel fortunate that I “get to” come to UCLA Athletics for work every day and try to make a positive impact on our student-athletes. As Coach Wooden said “Your energy and enjoyment, drive and dedication will stimulate and greatly inspire others.” Lydell Sargeant: My “block” is ALERTNESS. Alertness to me is one of the pillars of a successful team and organization. If everyone within an organization or team is open-minded, eager to learn and eager to improve, you ensure a collaborative environment that thrives on constant improvement and innovation.“ Brian Smith: “I have to go with two as they resonate together with me and aptly are the cornerstones of the Pyramid of Success - INDUSTRIOUSNESS and ENTHUSIASM. Nothing is achieved without tremendous effort and hard work. However, it’s just as important to enjoy and be enthusiastic about what you do as it not only fuels you to greater heights but also those around you.” Taylor Swearingen: “INDUSTRIOUSNESS” is a block in Coach Wooden’s Pyramid of Success with particular significance to me because I feel that hard work, in all pursuits, is critical to allow so many of the other elements of Coach’s Pyramid to shine through and make a positive impact in the world. As Coach says in the block, “there is no substitute for work.” GET TO KNOW YOUR WOODEN ATHLETIC FUND STAFF! UPCOMING EVENT Bruin Fan Focus Group Last month, on February 2nd, UCLA Athletics hosted its third annual Bruin Fan Focus Group. First formed in 2016, the Bruin Fan Focus Group consists of a diverse committee of UCLA Athletics constituents which gives fans a new avenue to provide vital input to the athletics department on an array of fan experience-related topics. This allows our fans to be even more involved in shaping their gameday experience, and is aimed at gathering feedback from a diverse cross section of Bruin fans. A valuable addition to UCLA Athletics' existing end-of-game and end-of-season fan/season seat holder surveys, the focus group, comprised of fans, season ticket holders, students, and faculty, will be tasked, along with members of the athletics department's external relations team, with identifying opportunities to enhance the experience of fans during UCLA home football, basketball and Olympic sports events. Past enhancements from the Bruin Fan Focus Group include adding a mobile ticketing Fast Pass option for Football and Men’s Basketball and enhanced advertising in the LA Times with our weekly athletics calendar. If you would like more information regarding the Bruin Fan Focus Group, please contact Evan Flagg, Assistant Athletic Director for Sales & Service, at 310-206-3302, or efl[email protected]. IMPERMISSIBLE USE OF UCLA STUDENT-ATHLETES NAMES AND LIKENESSES

Bruin student-athletes often gain “celebrity” status through their athletic achievements.

All Bruin supporters and fans need to know that:

1) The use of a current UCLA student-athlete’s name or likeness on commercial items oered for sale or for advertising or promotional purposes is impermissible under NCAA rules and can jeopardize the student-athlete’s athletic eligibility;

2) NCAA rules prohibits the use of a student-athlete’s name, photograph, likeness, or reputation to promote a commercial product or service of any kind; and

3) When a student-athlete’s name, image or likeness is used without the student-athlete’s knowledge or permission, NCAA rules require the student-athlete (or UCLA acting on behalf of the student-athlete) to take steps to stop that activity in order for the student-athlete to retain his or her eligibility.

If you commit every single day to help others succeed then you become a great leader and your team accomplishes their goals.”Gina Garrett: “POISE – I’m a big fan of stress-free wholesome living made possible by having no guile and knowing that you are encouraged to be yourself. I have learned that while anyone has the potential to work hard, having confidence in your ability to work hard and succeed in that work is absolutely imperative to reaching your goals.”Kat Lauer: “INDUSTRIOUSNESS. Its simple message has stuck with me; there is no substitute for hard work in any goal you set in life. I believe its importance is evident in why John Wooden placed it as a cornerstone in the pyramid and I like to think about being relentless when things get tough. Put your head down and push forward.”Emily Lerner: “Coach Wooden’s block, ‘FRIENDSHIP: Comes from mutual esteem, respect and devotion...it must not be taken for granted...’ I have learned to never take friends for granted; they should be cherished always. If you form friendships in the workplace, it can only have positive impacts on everything you and your colleagues seek to do.”Jill Machuca: “LOYALTY: Being loyal means keeping your word, being truthful, reliable, helpful and honest.”Parker Poliako: “The block “ENTHUSIASM” in Coach Wooden’s Pyramid of Success is one of the most meaningful blocks to me. I believe that having enthusiasm in everything you do is infectious and helps boost team morale and productivity. Enjoying what you are doing is vital for sustained success. I try and be enthusiastic in everything I do!” Josh Rebholz: “ENTHUSIASM, defined in the Pyramid of Success as: “Brushes o upon those with whom you come in contact. You must truly enjoy what you are doing.” I think having passion for what you do will not only improve production, enhancing your organization, it will motivate those around you and will allow for a more enjoyable life!”Zack Rosenfeld: “ENTHUSIASM: As our great UCLA Gymnastics Head Coach Valorie Kondos-Field says, having the spirit of “Getting to” do things versus “Having to” do things makes a world of dierence and perspective. I feel fortunate that I “get to” come to UCLA Athletics for work every day and try to make a positive impact on our student-athletes. As Coach Wooden said “Your energy and enjoyment, drive and dedication will stimulate and greatly inspire others.”Lydell Sargeant: “My “block” is ALERTNESS. Nothing is achieved without tremendous eort and hard work. As Coach says in the block, “there is no substitute for work.”

Bruin Fan Focus Group Last month, on February 2nd, UCLA Athletics hosted its third annual Bruin Fan Focus Group.

If you would like more information regarding the Bruin Fan Focus Group, please contact Evan Flagg, Assistant Athletic Director for Sales & Service, at 310-206-3302, or [email protected].
