A majority of the students who enroll in our program are new to interior design.

Being new to the industry, the students have a preconceived idea that interior

decorating is synonymous with interior design. During the first two weeks of

class, to help clarify the differences between interior design and interior

decorating, we discuss the design profession's history, how American Society of

Interior Designers (ASID) defines interior design, and the numerous opportunities

in the interior design industry.

The Personal (Career) Goals Vision Board Assignment is the student's first

opportunity to envision their ideal future interior design career. This type of

board is a vision board oriented towards a career in interior design. Students are

encouraged to use quotes, words, and pictures to illustrate their vision of their

dream design job! Even though this is a Fundamentals class, we encourage

students to envision what their ideal design career will entail with the expectation

that this vision will most likely change. However, we believe that it is never too

early to get students thinking about a career in interior design. There are

numerous benefits to having students complete this assignment. One benefit in

particular is that by completing this assignment students will conduct industry

research, increase their knowledge about our profession, and become exposed to

the varied opportunities within our industry. We have found that the students

enjoy this assignment because it is the first time that they will use their creativity

to create their first design board in the class and have an opportunity to visualize

a future career in interior design. The students will repeat this assignment at the

end of the program in the Business Practices course as a comparison.

Learning Objectives:

-- To envision a career in the interior design profession.

-- To reflect on their answers to the provided questions to help formulate the

student’s vision. (Note: A list of questions are attached. However, questions can

be developed by the instructor based on the objective of the assignment.)

-- To use the responses to the questions as inspiration to create a digital personal

(career) goals vision board.

-- To practice making presentations.

-- To learn to present their ideas in a specified time period.

Criteria:

The personal (career) vision board assignment meets the Career Exploration Core

Competency for the Fundamentals of Interior Design Course. Process:

Instructions provided to the student:

1. Sit in a quiet place, reflect, and answer the questions provided in the

assignment.

2. Use your answers to the questions as a starting point to create a personal

(career) vision board for your dream design job. You are encouraged to use

quotes, words, and pictures that are meaningful to you to illustrate your vision.

(Note: Royalty-free stock photos can be found searching websites such as Unsplash,

Pexels, Pixabay, and Creative Commons. If you use stock photos, be sure to read

and comply with the requirements to use the photos.)

3. Create an 11x17 PowerPoint slide presentation that includes the provided

questions with your answers and a slide of your vision board.

4. Upload your presentation into the learning management system (LMS) by the

due date and time.

5. On the day of the presentation, you will present your personal (career) vision

board via PowerPoint to the class.

6. You must present within the allotted time period.

Presentation Method:

This assignment is introduced in a class discussion format and assigned as

homework. The Fundamentals of Interior Design course is a hybrid and meets

two times per week. One class period can be used to discuss the requirements of

the assignment and assigned as homework.

Process instructions for the instructor:

Two weeks prior to the assignment:

--The Instructor introduces the assignment, reviews the rubric, shows a student

example, and answers questions.

--Assigns this assignment as homework.

One week prior to the assignment:

--The instructor will answer questions about the assignment.

Day assignment is due:

--Students upload their presentations into the learning management system and

present to the class.

Evaluation:

In our gradebook, this assignment is worth 100 points of the student’s overall

grade in the course. The student is assessed on the level of quality, the level of

thoughtfulness put into their digital vision board, and their ability to get

communicate their vision effectively. The most important part of this assignment

is to assess the student's ability to reflect on their answers to the questions in an

attempt to articulate their vision.

The rubric evaluates the student on the following:

Digital Vision Board:

-- The student put thought, effort, and creativity into creating their

“digital” personal (career) goals vision board (25 points).

-- The student answered the questions thoroughly and used pictures,

words, and/or quotes to add visual interest to their board (25 points).

-- The student’s PowerPoint presentation was well executed and met

program standards (25 points).

Presentation:

-- The student was present in class and prepared to present their board

(15 points).

-- The student stayed within the 10-minute allotted time period (10 points).

References: The students are encouraged to use information from their course textbook, the

internet, online magazines, online blogs, and any other source that feel will help

them communicate their career vision. Students are required to submit their

design board as a PowerPoint in the learning management system by the due
