THE BOTTOM LINE: The Irish, thanks to being members of one of the toughest regions in the state, have a very challenging task ahead of them. Exactly how they manage to navigate through it all will very likely offer some real evidence as to where the Father Ryan program is heading. Stay tuned.

Father Ryan head football coach Brian Rector knows that when you’re building something, one nec-essary tool is a hammer. And whether it’s for tighten-ing up the seams or pulling out a few rusty, old nails, it’s easy to smash your thumb a time or two.

Such is life on the Father Ryan football fi eld, where the reconstruction of the Irish program is entering its third year. Not in for a quick fi x, Rector and his staff are seeing progress in the process but are also preach-ing patience.

OFFENSE

SKILL SQUAD: Seamus O’Connell is one of Father Ryan’s more athletic and dynamic players.

He can and will play quarterback, but look for him more as well as wide receiver. And he will be called upon to run the ball. Rector says that getting the ball in O’Connell’s hands will be a top priority.

That task will largely be up to D.C. Tabscott, a young, talented quarterback who is showing great promise and just needs experience. Rector has never been one to to talk much about sophomores, but he is intrigued by what Tabscott brings to the team, espe-cially from a leadership standpoint.

TOP TARGETS: Evan Rewers, a senior, returns at receiver and has shown to be a more than capable pass catcher. David Ward, who was injured a lot of last year, returns as another WR, and he could give that unit a big boost

Meanwhile, Michael Lenahan, who has not seen a lot of playing time in the past, has had a really good “fall camp” and his extra eff ort has caught the atten-tion of the coaching staff .

Nick Watson will line up as another wide receiver, though he may be even more valuable to the team while playing safety.

Noah Haley, who will often line up as a tight end/U-back, gives the Irish another weapon.

IN THE TRENCHES: Felix Wilson has the most experience among the Irish off ensive linemen. He played all of last year as a junior and will be counted on heavily as the staff works to fi nd younger players to step up and fi ll some holes.

Kellen Delaney, now a senior, has worked his way into the mix on the line.

“Overall, where we are in the process is about where

I expected us to be” Rector said. “We have a very small senior class. When I fi rst got here, these guys were just fi nishing up their freshman year. I’m super proud of those guys for sticking through this and helping us to build this.”

DEFFENSE

“Everybody wants to win now, and nobody wants to win as much as I do,” Rector said. “I just know how long it takes. I know what the proces is like and I know what our roster is like right now. We defi nitely are go-ing to build it the right way.”

FIRST WAVE: Senior David Russell, who got into the mix as a sophomore, will start at defensive end once again. He has several Ohio Valley Conference schools, he’s defi nitely going to play on saturdays.

BACKING THE LINE: The Irish have three ju-niors who have seen quite a bit of time at linebacker, so Rector is counting heavily on the trio — Anthony Wright, Matthew Zito and Matthew Beacom — to lead the way.

COVER GUYS: Hunter Hopkins returns at corner, where he played much of last year, and Nick Watson fi gures to be a key defensively at safety.

While O’Connell will also help out as a defensive back, Grayson Hubbuch is another likely candidate to see a good bit of playing time.

“We defi nitely are encouraged about a lot of our young guys and how they have taken to the system quickly,” Rector said. “We feel like some of these young guys could absolutely factor into things this year.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Well, let’s just say that special teams is “up in the air.”

Rector said, “We’ve got a long way to go in our kick-ing game, and we look forward to getting there.”

With roughly 55 of the nearly 80 players on the roster either freshmen or sophomores, this team is bound to take quite a few lumps along the way.

“We are young, we are very young overall,” Rector said. “So our brightest days, we feel like, are ahead of us. But we’re not worried about, ‘Hey, what’s going on a year from now or two years from now.’ We feel like that’s going to be fi ne. We really want to do our best to give, especially the senior class, as good a year as we possibly can.”

“We’re young and we’re trying to keep things in perspec-tive. Our main focus is to try to get better every day. We don’t have tons of seniors and we don’t have tons of depth. So, every little thing matters. Nothing can be taken for granted now.”

“We’re trying to get kids to believe in themselves through hard work over time. We’re trying to get everybody to buy in through hard work over time.”

“When you change the expectations, this is anything, any business, industry, school, it doesn’t matter. When you come in and change the expectations, then there’s going to those they say, ‘Hey, this isn’t for me.’ And that’s OK. There’s nothing wrong with that.”

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: A big number the Burros are going have to replace is the 2,009 yards rushing put up last year by workhorse running back Jacob Frazier.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Even with the loss of some talented players from last year’s team, the Burros are still loaded with lots of experienced athletes that should help Hillsboro play tough against some really good teams this year.

Offense

Backfield: The Burros will look to build off of a successful

season, as head coach Maurice Fitzgerald heads into his second year at Hillsboro. Hillsboro will return six of their offensive starters, but they also lost a few big name players. The Burros lost running back Jacob Frazier, who rushed for 2009 yards on just 226 carries. He also rushed for 26 touchdowns during his senior season. Harold Jemison will likely serve as the running back for Hillsboro.

Offensive Line: The Burros will have replace a good number

of offensive lineman. They lost Trevon Brashers, Kevon Williams, and Deleno Howard to grad-uation, so they will have to fill in for that loss. Decorian Bowers will return to the offensive line though for the Burros.

Receivers: They also will have to replace Tre Dickerson,

who was the leading receiver last season for Hill-sboro. Dickerson had 311 receiving yards on just 19 catches, finishing the year with a total of five touchdowns. Harold Jemison will likely serve as the running back for Hillsboro. Athletes Gyasi Mattison, Avont Burrus, and Darrian Williams will likely see reps at wide receiver and even at run-ning back over the course of the season.

Defense

Defensive Line: Like the offense, the defense will return a to-

tal of six starters from last year’s team. They lost a good number of playmakers on the defensive side of the ball. The Burros will return defensive end Joseph Honeysucker who recently just com-mitted to the University of Memphis. Along with Honeysucker, the d-line will also feature Therone Orr and Jay Henderson from last year’s team.

Linebacker: The linebacker core for the Burros will be rich

with seniors, as J’Tylan Evans, Chance Williams, Rodney Jackson, Simon Robertson, and Nate Ramirez all head into their senior year looking to improve on last year’s 7-5 record. These guys will have to step up for the Burros, as they lost Javon-te Dean Wiggins and T.J. Neal to graduation. Neal led the team in tackles, as he finished with 56 to-tal tackles and 25 TFLs. Wiggins finished with 39 tackles and seven TFLs. They also lost Rayveyon Thomas, who was fifth on the team with 23 tack-les.

Defensive Back: Coach Fitzgerald stated the defensive backs

and skill players will be the team’s strength this year. The secondary will return Jamaal Thompson at strong safety. Like on the offensive side of the ball, Mattison, Burrus, and Williams will return in the secondary as well. The secondary could also feature seniors such as Tremariontez Goodner and Kaleb Dudley.

Special Teams: As far as special teams go, the Burros will have

to replace Adam Amroun, who handled all kicking duties for the Burros last season. Some of their skill guys will likely fill into the role of kick re-turner and punt returner.

The Bottom Line: This Hillsboro team is full of senior talent. This

team has the chance to make some noise in a very tough division. The skill guys will carry the Burros throughout the year, as Coach Fitzgerald preached on how his skill guys were the most talented group out there. Hillsboro has some very tough games on their schedule, including the season opener at Brentwood Academy, as well as games at CPA and Beech. How they fare in those games will likely determine how far this team can go into the playoffs.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Defense could play a key part in the success or failure of the Indians this year. Harpeth has a number of returning starters on the defensive side of the ball and that can keep them in a lot of games.THE BOTTOM LINE: It could be a long year for Harpeth unless some of their younger players can step up and fill the void left by last year’s starters.

Offense

Backfield: This will be an interesting year for the Harpeth

Indians offensively. They will return a good num-ber of their threats. They return playmakers like Luke Gossett, who compiled 1284 all purpose yards last season, scoring seven touchdowns. Freddy Polk will also return for the Indians this season, as he rushed for 545 yards last season and six rushing touchdowns. As far as quarter-back goes, the Harpeth Indians will have three guys that will duel it out for that spot. Thomas Sloan, Alex Tapia, and Dakota DeLang all have a chance to see action at QB.

Offensive Line: They will have to replace a good number of the

offensive line, They lost linemen Jarrett McKinley, Zechariah Saffer, Blake Moulton, Justin Anderson, and Dalton Rucker to graduation. Guys such as Kolby Meadows, Austin Bell, Chase Finch, Peyton Woodall and John Harrison will have a chance at offensive line for Harpeth.

Receivers: With the style of offense Harpeth runs, they

don’t throw the ball much. If they do, it is usual-ly to the running backs, with a few throws here and there to a wide receiver. Justin Utley returns from last year’s team. Utley had six receptions for 100 yards and one touchdown last season. Gossett had 12 receptions last season as well.

Defense

Defensive line: Like on the offensive side of the ball, the de-

fensive side of the ball lost a good number of lineman from last season. The Indians will have to replace a defensive line that compiled 245 total tackles last season He returns for the Indians.

He ended the season off with 61 total tackles, three pass deflections, one caused fumble, and one sack last year as a sophomore. Utley will re-turn to the line, as he finished with 22 tackles last season.

Linebackers: Matthew Pack will return for the Indians this

year at linebacker. He stood out as a freshman, compiling 67 total tackles. Alongside Pack, Logan Callies returns as the Indians middle linebacker. Callies finished with 42 tackles in his sophomore season.

Defensive Backs: Gossett will return for the Indians, playing cor-

nerback. Gossett finished with 59 total tackles and a team high five interceptions. He also had one pass deflection, forced a fumble, and blocked a field goal. Austin Potter, who finished with 32 tackles, and Travis McCoy, who finished with 18 tackles, will return to the secondary this year for the Harpeth Indians.

Special Teams: As far as special teams go, Harpeth will return

much of the specialists. McCoy will return as the kicker, as he handled kickoffs, punts, PATs, and field goals for Harpeth last year. Gossett also saw action last year on special teams as the punter, and the kickoff and punt returner.

The Bottom Line: This will be a difficult season for the Harpeth

Indians. They come into the year having to re-place a good bit of the offensive and defensive line, but return a good bit of their skill guys, so it will be interesting to see how that plays out for them. They don’t have much depth so that might turn out to hurt them. If they can get out to a fast start in the season, they could ride that wave and potentially make it to the playoffs.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: The Tigers will be tested this year. Not only have they lost their top running back and most of their offensive line, but for the first time in their history, Ricky Bowers will not be at the helm.THE BOTTOM LINE: It’s a beginning of a new era under head coach Jeremy Garrett and even with the losses, Ensworth is still loaded with talent.

OFFENSE

SKILL SQUAD: This Ensworth team will have some shoes to fill this season, as the Tigers lost a few of their team leaders, in both rushing and receiving yards.

They lost RB Nicky Clifton, who rushed for 907 yards and 14 touchdowns on 125 attempts. They will return Cole Kennon, who started nine games for the Tigers last season. Kennon threw for 820 yards, completing 47 of his 80 pass attempts. He ended the year off with five touchdown passes and one interception.

They will also return running back Keshawn Lawrence, who saw a good bit of action last sea-son as a sophomore, when he rushed for 599 yards on just 55 attempts and six touchdowns.

Gabriel McDaniel will likely get some attempts this season for the Tigers. As a sophomore, he rushed for 89 yards on just 10 attempts, scoring one touchdown.

IN THE TRENCHES: The Tigers will have some shoes to fill. They lost aood bit of their of-fensive line, as Tanner Antonutti signed to Ten-nessee. They will also have to replace Henry Byrd, Paxton Smith, Trey Lanier, Sam Edwards, and Derek Rios.

They will return guys such as Ethan Sipe, Jake Pagach, and a few others.

TOP TARGETS: They will have to replace Jaylon King, who caught 20 passes for 333 yards and rushed for 350 on 55 attempts, to gradua-tion.

Kennon lost two of his top wide receivers to graduation, so Jude Maloy, Lawrence and Mc-Daniel will have to come up big for the Tigers this season. Maloy was second on the team last season, as he caught seven passes for 156 yards and two touchdowns. Lawrence had five recep-tions for 101 yards and one touchdown, while McDaniel had two receptions for 69 yards and a

touchdown.

Wesley Walker might get some time at wide re-ceiver for the Tigers.

DEFENSE

FIRST WAVE: Like the offensive line, the de-fensive line will have to replace some guys who were lost to graduation.

The Tigers will have a good bit of their defense back this season. They will have to replace An-tonutti, Byrd, Smith, Lanier, Edwards, and Rios, but return David Reynolds, who finished last season with 27 total tackles.

BACKING THE LINE: The linebacker core will need to be big for the Tigers this season. They return Tyler Baron who finished with 35 tackles, and Elijah Brooks, who stood out with 33 tackles, and Josh Howard, who finished the year with a total of 28 tackles.

COVER GUYS: The Tigers will also get back Wesley Walker, which will be a key addition. Walker tore his ACL before the season last year, and had to sit out the whole year.

Despite sitting out last season, Walker was still in talks with colleges. Walker ended up commit-ting to Georgia Tech a few weeks ago. They also return Gabriel McDaniel, Keshawn Lawrence, Dante Wynn, and Will Garrett, who will likely see time in the secondary for the Tigers.

SPECIAL TEAMS: The Tigers will have to replace Lucas Rodriguez, who handled most kicking duties for Ensworth last season. James Seabury will likely fill into that role this season. Lawrance and other skill guys will likely be the guys who will return kickoffs and punts for the Tigers this season.
