tomorrow to professionally develop staff in the skills of teaching reading. During our conversations, Mrs Williams, our resident expert, and I discussed with Miss Brennan and Mr Tucker what is the right work for the school and how we get that done. What is the way forward for our students in terms of ensuring they are reaching potential, academically. Reading is one of our most important teaching skills and any assistance that improves the quality of teaching pedagogy in this area is gratefully accepted.

Resilience: There were some wonderful examples of Resilience demonstrated at the Paralympics during the last fortnight. These athletes personify the word Resilience with their mental and physical toughness. I was especially proud to be an “Aussie” on Sunday when Australians won Gold in the Wheelchair marathon and Silver in the Vision Impaired Marathon. Hopefully, some of the sports men and women will be taken on by the “Big Companies” as ambassadors and we will get to meet them personally.

Beef in the Buffel Ball: There are still a few tickets left for the Beef and the Buffel Ball this Saturday, 11th September. Tickets available through Try Booking - www.trybooking.com/BSQBU. It is an event not to be missed and a great way to support our P&C and school community.

Celebrations of Success: Congratulations to Year 9 and 10 who had 100% attendance last week.

Student of the Week: Memphis – Relationships Celebration of Success- Mrs Abulencia – Responsibility Sportsperson of the Week – Caleb - Excellent Goal Kicking

Century Snippets - A recount of Teaching in Injune by Ivy Girle

“I commenced duties at the Injune State School as an assistant teacher on the 11th of March 1946. The school was a rectangular wooden building consisting of two classrooms with a porch on the eastern side. A small gate at the northern boundary gave access. You proceeded between the bottletrees to the middle set of stairs leading up to the school. A folding door between the two classrooms assured good cross ventilation. Uncovered hardwood floors, two blackboards, a wooden press (cupboard) and simple furniture was considered ample equipment. Teachers had a chair and a table, but they rarely had time to sit down. The students had long wooden forms (bench seats) to sit on and a long wooden desk on which to work. These desks were equipped with slots to store the students’ slates and a hole to carry the ink bottle.”

R U OK? Day

R U OK? day is a national day of action that is dedicated to reminding people to regularly check in with family, friends, colleagues and neighbours. R U OK day’s mission is “to inspire and empower people to meaningfully connect with those in their world and lend support when they are struggling with life.

This year Injune State school will be raising awareness for our staff and students on R U OK? day. On Thursday 9th September students will have the opportunity to engage in some well-being activities and they will each receive an R U Ok? day cupcake and wrist band.

We look forward to raising awareness with everyone.
