English Simple Past Tense Irregular Verbs

Se usa el simple past tense (el pasado simple) para indicar una situación o acción que empezó y

terminó en el pasado. En inglés el simple past tense comprende el imperfecto y el indefinido,

por lo tanto, hay que traducir según el sentido de la frase.

Los verbos del simple past tense se dividen en regulares e irregulares.

Forma Regular

Como norma general, para formar el pasado en inglés, se añade ed a un verbo.

work (trabajar)

Si el verbo ya termina en e, sólo se añade la d.

live (vivir) – lived

Los verbos monosílabos que terminan en consonante duplican la consonante final.

rub (frotar) – rubbed

Los verbos bisílabos que terminan en consonante, con acento en la última sílaba, duplican la

consonante final.

prefer (preferir) - preferred

Los verbos que terminan en y detrás de una consonante cambian la y por i al añadir la ed.

cry (llorar) - cried

Forma Irregular

Muchos verbos tienen formas irregulares en el pasado. Forman el pasado de forma distinta.

go (ir)

I went we went

you went you went

he went

she went

they went

I worked we worked

you worked you worked

he worked

she worked

they worked

Ben worked in a

hotel last year.

Richard went to

Spain two years ago.

Task Card Speaking Activity

There are 2 groups of task cards. Group 1 consists of subjects and group 2 consists of actions.

Cut out the task cards and place each group on the table. Student A picks one card from each

group of cards and creates a sentence using the simple past tense. Then, Student B takes a

turn.

Rita and Pedro practice this speaking activity.

Rita draws a card from the subject group. It reads: Martha. Then, she draws a card from the

actions group. It reads: go to Miami. Rita says: Martha went to Miami.

Now, it is Pedro’s turn. He draws a card from the subject group. It reads: Roger. Then, Pedro

draws a card from the actions group. It reads: eat a hotdog. Pedro says: Roger ate a hotdog.

The task cards are on pages 32–35.

Rita y Pedro hablan usando tarjetas de
