The CWT light Oil Indirect Tank Heater (Models 385 & 770)

Tecvalco is pleased to offer the Light Oil Market an indirect heating solution to allow for atmospheric tank treating at Light Oil Production sites. Save your company money and time by treating your light oil right on site in the tank and truck clean oil. Cold Weather Technologies heaters are a safe and effective method to transfer heat into fluids in volatile or restrictive applications.

We offer two (2) designs for the market currently, a 385,000 Btu/hr heater and a 770,000 btu/hr heater in either an ASME Section IV Boiler design or a lower cost non-spec heating system. Our heat-ers provide simplified operator friendly controls and instrumentation, low maintenance operation and reduced cleaning costs to bring your product to market.

About the Product

There are four safety control devices on our heaters, a high discharge temperature switch that will shut down the main burner when the temperature setting is reached, a high temperature manual reset ESD switch that will shut down the main burner and pilot, a high pressure switch that shuts down the main burner and pilot and a PRV with manual reset that will vent the steam from the heater to a safe container if the set point of 15 psi is ever reached.

Our heaters operate at low pressures and in vacuum when the load is constant or the heater is cold. Skin temperatures of the in-tank condenser coil are such that there is no coking effect on the tubes and no hot spots. Temperatures of 60oC are easily attainable to clean light oil to meet with regulatory specs for BS&W.

Installations are quick and simple and commissioning takes about a day.

Typical Installation

There are some key points to adhere to in regards to installing the CWT indirect tank heater;

1. Heaters must be placed on a level cement or screw pile foundation

2. Heaters must be place 50 meters away from the wellhead and 21’ from the tank (outside the containment or berm)

3. Interconnecting piping must be sloped towards the heater to gravity flow the condensed steam back to the heater

4. Interconnecting piping is to be insulated and cladded as to avoid line loss

5. The tank condenser coil must be installed with a slope towards the heater / tank throat

6. The condenser coil can be fitted with a custom flange pattern to match an existing 10” firetube throat or Tecvalco can supply a throat and gasket to match our coil. (Drawings and sign off to be to be supplied by the client)

7. One (1) 1” or ¾” coupling must be installed in the tank 12” up and 12” to the right of the condenser for the temperature probe that operates the heater.

8. A support inside the tank is required for the coil and must be installed so that the coil is sloped toward the throat or heater.

9. The flex connections provided with the field kit are to be installed on the heater inlet and outlet flanges and the interconnecting piping.

10. All connections must be free of leaks and installed as per std. pipe fitting practices with new gaskets. The heaters are a closed loop systems, placed under vacuum.

11. A gas line must be piped up to the gas header provided with the heater and a fuel gas pressure not less than 5 psi is required for proper operation.

Notes about the installation and operation of the CWT Indirect tank heater;

A) All piping must slope back towards the return line of the heater as the system has no pumps and has a gravity return system to the heater.

B) The tank throat and placement of the coil must be higher than the return and outlet of the heater.

C) Heater should be placed in an area where snow banks do not block the flame arrestor cell (Air Intake).

D) A 50/50 Propylene Glycol (DowFrost HD) and water blend is used inside our heating systems. Steam is the heat transfer medium and glycol is for freeze protection and corrosion inhibiting.

E) Maintenance is required periodically in regards to cleaning of the swordfish elements inside the burner section of the heater. This will maintain the life expectancy of the heater. (refer to operator manual for further maintenance details)

F) Tanks can settle in the field and cause the slope of the internal tank coil to be reduced or in some cases reversed. This will trap the condensed steam in the coil and not allow it to return to the heater reducing or eliminating the heat transfer to the process.

G) Wet or Sour Fuel Gas will cause the RobertShaw Gas valve to malfunction, the supply fuel gas for our heating systems must be “dry” pipeline grade natural gas or propane. If casing gas or solution gas is being used the customer is advised to put in place measures to adequately dry the fuel gas such as scrubbers, desiccant dryers or H2S Scavengers prior to CWT Field Technicians arrival at site.

What is all supplied with the CWT Indirect Tank Heater Systems?

Attached you will find what all can be expected for parts and pieces shipped in a crate for a typical Light Oil installation. On the day of arrival of your new CWT heater, we recommend to open and inspect the crate shipped with the heater to ensure the accuracy of the shipping documents. All parts listed on the traveller should accompany the heater in the crate.

Parts that are to be supplied by the customer or others will include;

1. Interconnecting piping from the tank to the flex pipe.

2. Gas line from the source to the heater gas manifold (supplied Fisher 289 and Fisher HSR in the crate).

3. Insulation and cladding for the interconnecting piping.

4. Level Foundation or piles for the Heater /Boiler.

5. 1” or ¾” Coupling in the tank for the temperature controller.

6. Heat exchanger support(s) in the tank and interconnecting piping supports.

Fuel Gas Requirements

A minimum of 5 psi fuel gas pressure is required for proper combustion in our heaters. Supplied with the heater are a Fisher HSR c/w ½” orifice which drops the inlet pressure from 5 psi (or a max of 20 psi) to 4 – 14 inches of water column and a Fisher 289 regulator (set at 2 psi).

Glycol within the CWT Indirect Tank Heater

We use an environmentally friendly option of 50/50 propylene water mix which is a Dow Chemical product called DowFrost HD. Upon commissioning of your new CWT unit our site technician will bring the glycol to site and fully charge your unit. The vacuum will be pulled down to approx. -28” Hg and then the glycol will be filled into the unit. (If the unit ever loses vacuum, it will have to be drained and completely re-charged with new DowForst HD propylene glycol in most cases as the mixture may be off from the 50/50 baseline)

Periodic testing of the glycol is recommended strictly for freeze protection and can be done using the double valve (block and bleed) set up under the sight glass without losing vacuum on the unit itself. This procedure is to be done with the unit shut down and completely cold.

Commissioning On Site

Once the CWT heater is installed on site by the owner and Tecvalco is contacted for commissioning, our site technician will arrive and start the review process of the installation. He will be looking for the fol-lowing items to be installed and or completed;

1. Heater, on a level pad or support

2. Interconnecting piping installed with a downward slope towards the heater.

3. Thermowell and probe installed in the tank and wired back to the control panel as per the wiring diagrams found in the Operating and Maintenance manual supplied in the field crate. For electri- cal connections in the field, customers are required to check with local jurisdictions and regulations for permit requirements on the wiring. Or if requested, Tecvalco can check and provide electrical permits and bill the customer direct.

4. Heat Exchanger level in the tank throat to ensure there is enough slope, so that the condensed water does not get trapped in the coil.

5. A fuel gas line from the source to our gas manifold is installed correctly and completely. (with any required scrubbers/ dryers in place if using casing gas or solution gas)

6. All ship loose parts and pieces installed properly, such as the heater stack and cap, fuel gas regula- tors, interconnecting flex hoses with new gaskets, thermowell etc…

Our Field Service Technicians will install any items not completed by the customer once onsite to com-plete the commissioning process.

Field Rates for Tecvalco personnel

See attached field rate sheet for travel costs and labor rates for all Tecvalco personnel. Tecvalco does not charge overtime to our customers.

What’s covered by Tecvalco Warranty?

We offer an industry standard warranty of year after commissioning for the heater itself and we follow the manufacturer’s warranty for instrumentation and controls. In regards to miss-use, or a failing Robert-Shaw Gas valve due to moisture or liquids in the line, this will not be covered by our standard warranty as it’s considered “miss-use” and it is the owner’s responsibility to provide dry clean fuel gas for the heater to function properly.
