Industry Relations - Functions

1. Identify the local industries and the key players that affect IEEE goals

2. Identify the local industries which either employ IEEE members orpotentially have need of IEEE products and services

3. Survey of local industry to determine the IEEE membership/involvementof employees.

4. Promote IEEE to industry as a relevant information provider to enhancetheir employees technical expertise

5. Develop a program to counsel members to promote IEEE to employers

6. Provide local IEEE volunteers with the means to advocate IEEE toindustry.

7. Promote sharing of industry training courses with IEEE sections andchapters and vice versa.

8. Track committee and local volunteer industry contact.

9. Recognize industry for contribution to the technical and professionalachievements relevant to IEEE. Recognize industry for high level of IEEEinvolvement.

Region 1 sponsored Industry Day Update

Took Place February 5, 2009 in Piscataway, NJ– Telcordia Technology hosted the event at their facilities

350 people pre-registered via EDAS– About 300 people attended

Two tracks (Telecom, Green)

Panel: Using IEEE to Engineer Your Future

Continuing Education Credits

Provided a way to communicate with local Industry leaders

Provided an opportunity for non-members to become members on site

IEEE.TV has recorded the program and interviewed the speakers

Reached out to about 20 new companies by phone calls

Site visits to many Industries

New IEEE friends formed

Survey and feedback would help plan the future events

Tentative plans for IEEE Industry Liaison – Region 1 Objective : Increase IEEE awareness among the industries within Region 1 for the benefit of both IEEE and employees of different industries

Possible benefits:– Increase IEEE membership from Industry– Increase industry participation in many IEEE related events and conferences– Give a chance to the leading industries to take advantage of IEEE’s resources (e.g. Enterprise Xplore)– Give a chance to the employers to reward their employees (e.g., Fellow, other IEEE awards)– Increase cross industry relationship via IEEE (e.g., talks, special interest group)

How?– Get help from IEEE HQ, use successful models from other regions (e.g., region 5, region 8)– Institute an industry liaison representative for each Section with the help from respective Section chair– Figure out a list of industries within each section to engage with– Make presentation about IEEE with the help from an IEEE official from HQ, section liaison, membership

development chair– Request an IEEE liaison from each industry employer within each Section– Invite industry speakers to IEEE sponsored chapter meetings, section meetings– Arrange periodic telecon among the section liaison representatives for planning

(e.g., 4 times a year)– Report periodic progress to Region 1 director and get feedback

What have we done so far– Many of the sections have established their local industry liaison– We have started the dialogue with IEEE HQ – Region 1 Southern Area IEEE-Industry Day – This will help prepare the Industry day in other areas

How IEEE Membership is Organized

Grouped into geographic areas reflecting where we live and work …

– 10 Geographic Regions319 Regional Sections

1,526 Student Branches…and technical areas based on our fields and interests.

– 39 Societies and 5 Technical Councils1676 Chapters

Page 16: Industry Relation Update Ashutosh Dutta, Industry Relations Coordinator (with Feedback from TK Srinivas on Industry Day)

Current Issues facing IEEEMembership Decline– Mostly in region 1 – 6

Common question often asked– What am I getting from IEEE?

Lack of awareness of IEEE benefits among Industry partners

Lack of interaction between different Industry professionalsNeed involvement at the grass root level– Joint effort between the volunteers and IEEE HQ– Reaching out to Industries

IEEE impacts industry productivity, branding, and profitability via access to Intellectual Property, development of Standards, professional development of engineers, preparation of students

Page 22: Industry Relation Update Ashutosh Dutta, Industry Relations Coordinator (with Feedback from TK Srinivas on Industry Day)

Industry Benefits from IEEE

More Patents Cite IEEE Information

Referencing to IEEE papers has increased 267% in the last decade

Patenting has increased 76% in the last decade

As patenting becomes increasingly important to corporate valuation, IEEE information becomes more essential to the acquisition of patents

Current patents build on IEEE information far more than they did a decade ago
