POMOR TRADE- 1812In 1812 the pomor trade between the Norwegian and the Russian fishers was an important Industry. The trade started as early as the Viking age, but reached its peak around 1812. The Russians would travel to Tromsø by ship in the summer and bring different types of corn that they sold, and then buy fish from the Norwegian fishers. At that time the trade was crucial for the Norwegians, because of several bad harvesting seasons. Usually the demand for fish went down in the summer, but because the Russians bought it the Norwegian fishers were secured a more steady income throughout the year.

FISHING INDUSTRY- 1812Fishing has been a big industry in most of the cities situated by the coastline, and Tromsø is no exception. Though maybe not as impressive as the industry in the southern Norway in cities like Lofoten, it was still a big part of Tromsø. The fishing was mainly on typical Norwegian species like halibut, trout and salmon, but also seal and whale (hunting). Except for the trade with other places in Norway, Tromsø also shipped and sold fish to other countries (especially with Russians in the pomor trade).

INDUSTRY 2012Today, Tromsø is a distinct service municipality, with just over three quarters of the city's working population employed in the public and private service or business. This is primarily due to Tromsø's role as a center for commerce, education and administration. It has a university, a hospital and several colleges.Tromsø is the seat of both the county administration in Troms and County Governor of Troms.

The most important industrial sector for employment is the food industry, with nearly half the industrial employment. These are found in the fish processing industry as well as inMack's Brewery & Mineralvandfabrik. Manufacturing Industry is an important branch of industry, supported by Tromsø shipyard (23% of industry employees), as well as the printing industry and publishing (15%), including newspapers Northern Lights, Northern Norway's largest newspaper, and Tromsø. Troms county is the owner of a steamship company, which operates several shortcut routes and speed boats and a coastal steamer.
