Textile Industry

The textile industry is the largest industry of Pakistan. At the time of partition, Pakistan received only 17 textile units in its share. The production of textile was very low and a large quantity of textile had to be imported to meet the domestic, requirements. Now, Pakistan is a prominent country for the production of textile. The textile industry accounts for 17.3% of value added, 32.2% of industrial employment and 60% of total exports. There were 354 mills operating in the textile industry in 2001-02. The installed capacity of spindles was 8841 thousand and installed capacity of looms was 10 thousand in the same year. The production of cloth was 558 million square meters by the organized mills sector. Various steps have been taken by the Government for the growth of the textile industry e.g. the provision of incentives, freedom to acquire technical assistance from abroad, directly financing institutions and improvements in management and labour efficiency etc.

Environmental Concerns

Industry’s waste is disposed into lakes nearby hence causing water pollution.

Toxic gases coming from industries such as brick kiln industry cause air pollution.

Acid rain occurs. Global warming occurs. Climate change takes place. Diseases are spread such as skin diseases. Land degradation.

Page 9: Industries in pakistan

How to solve these problems

Implementing the strict guidelines set by the local governing bodies pertaining to waste water disposal should solve the problem to a great extent.

Proper treatment of wastes before disposal into rivers. Invest in latest technology. Make laws to limit disposal of waste into rivers. Make industries in less densely populated areas so that less

people get diseases.

Pakistan is a oil and gas deficient country and imports oil to fulfil daily needs but UAE and Qatar have a lot of extra oil. Even they can export it.

Proper skilled labour of UAE and Qatar has helped in Industrial growth and benefit but this has not been the case with Pakistan as it lacks skilled labour.

UAE has invested in Tourism Industry as it has a huge demand from tourists. Pakistan has not worked that efficiently for betterment of tourism industry.

A huge number of educated people have helped in industries of UAE and Qatar but the number is very low of educated people in Pakistan.
