Suiker Unie’s factories are amongst the most modern in the world. The company operates factories in Dinteloord and Vierverlaten in the Netherlands and Anklam in Germany. The sugar specialities, such as icing sugar, soft sugar and sugar syrups, are produced in factories in Puttershoek and Roosendaal in the Netherlands. Suiker Unie’s products are available in a large part of Europe. Suiker Unie serves the Dutch retail and foodservice markets under the Van Gilse brand name.
Suiker Unie works as sustainably as possible, from growing the beet to processing them into granulated sugar. We make full use of all the residual flows produced during the sugar process. Our biomass digesters are a good
example of our green credentials. They convert beet tops and tails, pressed beet pulp waste and other residual flows into green gas. Suiker Unie is the biggest green gas producer in the Netherlands. We also sell thick juice and molasses to the fermentation industry. In cooperation with our beet growers, suppliers, logistics partners and customers, we continuously seek further improvements in the sustainability of our supply chain.
This brochure provides an introduction to our product range and our services. For more information about our sustainable operations and our products, see www.suikerunie.com or contact our customer service.
Suiker Unie is a member of the Royal Cosun group, a
cooperative of more than 9,000 sugar beet growers in
the Netherlands. Our ambition is to be the best at
maximising the value of all components of the sugar
beet for our customers, growers and staff.

With our advanced order processing, planning and delivery systems,
we are able to make flexible and just in time bulk sugar deliveries to our
customers 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And we can deliver to you, too.
We can also manage the stock position in your silos and tanks using our Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) system. A sensor in your silo and an online internet connection continuously monitor your stock. If it falls below an agreed level, Suiker Unie automatically makes a new delivery of sugar. VMI saves you time and trouble. You do not need to worry about how much sugar you have. You can even monitor your stock position yourself on the internet. In addition to stock management, we can advise you on silo storage and internal sugar transport.
To guarantee quality, we use only dedicated sugar vehicles to deliver our products. Suiker Unie makes standard deliveries of sugar products to every region in the Netherlands twice a week. International deliveries can be tailored to the customers’ wishes. We have a wealth of international experience in transporting sugar by water, rail and road.
Sustainability is an important factor not only in the cultivation of the beet and the production of the sugar but also in our transport. We have taken many initiatives to limit CO2 emissions. We drive on our own biogas and use electric compressors at the customers’ delivery sites. And we have increased our bulk loading capacity so that our trucks can carry more per journey. These initiatives have won us the Lean & Green Award. In 2014 we want to cut our CO2 emissions by at least 20% relative to 2009.

To maximise the value of sugar beet as effectively and efficiently
as possible, Suiker Unie invests in research & development (R&D)
throughout the entire supply chain, from beet cultivation techniques
to process innovation to reduce energy consumption and increase
production capacity. We even invest in our customers’ product development.
Suiker Unie is also active in the biobased economy, in which the production of
bioplastics from sugar is just one of the many potential benefits.
Most of our R&D is carried out at Cosun Food Technology Centre (CFTC). Suiker Unie has its own laboratories and technology halls at CFTC, where its application and ingredient specialists perform a wide range of activities to perfect the application of our products in soft drinks, ice cream, chocolate, baked goods, sauces, dairy
products, confectionery and other products. We can therefore advise our customers and help them optimise their existing and new formulas and applications. We support them with our thorough knowledge of process technology and contribute to their process development.
Suiker Unie also uses a variety of analytical techniques and an expertly trained sensory panel to develop its products and applications. They enable us to perfect and control the flavour, aroma and texture of our products.
Research & Development: we work with our clients

Suiker Unie’s quality management system is driven by the customers’
wishes and demands. Food safety comes first.
It is guaranteed by our comprehensive HACCP system. All our factories in the Netherlands have ISO 22000 certification. They have also been awarded the GFSI-approved BRC standard for food safety, as has the factory in Anklam, Germany.
The basic product range is Halal and Kosher certified.
Environmental care, workplace safety and ethical practices (both internal and external) are important aspects of our operations as a sustainable business. Suiker Unie is accordingly certified to ISO 14001 standard, performs self-audits to ISO 26000 standard, is subject to UL Responsible Sourcing Inc audit and is a member of SEDEX.
To continuously improve and optimise our internal processes, Suiker Unie applies TPM (Total Productive Maintenance). The locations in Vierverlaten and Puttershoek have won the TPM Excellence Award.
Our quality control goes further than just our own processes. Beet growers and suppliers of consumables, technical equipment, packaging materials, logistics and other services are very closely involved in our quality and food safety processes.

Basic properties • Manufactured by inverting liquid sugar.• Invert sugar contains equal quantities of
glucose and fructose.• Transparent and light in colour.• Slightly viscous.• Available with differing dry matter values.• Aw = 0.6 (invert sugar syrup, dry matter 80%).
We can invert sugar in two ways, by adding an acid or by using enzymes.
Invert sugar syrup product range
In addition to fully inverted sugar syrups, Suiker Unie makes partially inverted sugar solutions. Functional benefits• Good moisture stabiliser so that products
(e.g. cake and tobacco) remain fresh for longer.• Improves organoleptic properties of
fruit aromas.• Baked goods (e.g. gingerbread, brownies, etc.)
gain an attractive brown colour and pleasant taste more quickly.
• Preserving properties thanks to the reduction of water activity (e.g. in fruit preparations and preserved foods).
• Inhibits crystallisation in confectionery (e.g. fondant).
• Lowers freezing point (e.g. sorbet remains softer and easier to serve).
Standard packaging
We can also tailor our invert sugar syrup and packaging to meet your wishes.
