Indian Music• The music of India is said to be one of the oldest

unbroken musical traditions in the world.

• Indian music was passed on by oral tradition from one generation to another.

Indian Music• Indian Music is probably the most complex musical system in the world

with a very highly developed melodic and rhythmic structure

• Indian Music had its origins in the Vedas, which are the most sacred texts which contains about a thousand hymns.

• The literature of the Vedas is divided into four parts:

- The Rig Veda: The oldest, dates back to about 4000 B.C.

- The Sama Veda: Laid the foundation for Indian music

- The Yajur Veda: consists of sacrificial formulas and the Veena

- The AtharvaVerda: collection of formulas that dealt with Black Magic and Spells

• The text of the Vedas is in Sanskirt, the classical language of India

• History of Indian Music may be divided into Ancient, Medieval, and Modern periods
