Solution

PDA with windows mobile for reading help and reading training:

• Camera – photos of all kinds of texts →• Synthetic speak – translating text• Dictionary – general and trade specific• Reading exercises – various• Games as exercises


Purpose and aims• To empower people with different skills

to read on the move using a mobile device

• To speed up the reading skills enabling new methods using a mobile device

• To minimize the number of tasks for the user to read using a mobile device

• To enable the user to read anything, anywhere, anytime using a mobile device

• To develop a platform/services that may be developed for numerous other groups (globally)

• To benefit from the cooperation between academic research, technological development and business

• To study the consequences of research


Pilot project

• Focus on construction workers with reading disabilities

• Interviews with 7 workers regarding media use/experience/attitudes and reading/ writing problems plus work-related issues

• Test of pilot• Larger group of test persons from

schools/courses – beta-testing

Purpose: industry: does it work? Does it sell? language scholars: do they read

better? media scholars: more knowledge about meaning of digital media






Findings

• Users are less afraid of using a mobile device

• Users are learning approximately 2,000 new wordsin 3 month

• Users dare learn new “stuff”• Users are showing improved

confidence• Users with other challenges are

using the solutions
