In Our Shoes
In Our Shoes
LIFE AND WORK BALANCE
by Célia Fortes - Brazil
Introduction
This presentation is about being an imperfect woman.
An imperfect woman who is always doing the
best as a worker, mother, wife, teacher, engineer, musician, social helper, tennis player, friend, grandmother...
... and still finds time to pay attention to technology developments, coordinate women groups, fight for ecology, go to the supermarket, cookand read a book.
Women have a natural talent for task management: We are flexible and FLEXIBILITY is the key.
Task Management
But from time to time we need to make a PAUSE
PAUSE
To review our ROUTINES
Systems of task organization can be of great help. David Allen creator of GTD – Getting Things Done - gives simple and effective hints, such as dividing your daily tasks by context. Try separating your TO DO list by CONTEXT:
With organization, our shoes can become rollers.

REVIEWS OF WORK PROCESSESCLIENT
Technology can be a great helper.Choose your tools according to your needs. You don't need to have the latest tech sensationto work better.
Technology
We make a living by what we get.We make a life by what we give.W. Churchill
In the working place, we must “ dig our heels in” to negotiate with our employers or employees for finding better conditions to work.
The most common and important example, is that managing professional and personal tasks can be reallydifficult for mothers... and fathers.
WORK&LIFE
?Working parents
can feel guilty if they work too much and don't have time for home, children and family. (guilt x paid help)
Parents who leave work for dedicating time to their kids feel
guilty for not dedicating time to their careers.

Negotiating
Negotiate change. If you need changes for a better life, negotiate with your employer, employees, family, partner, and above all, negotiate with yourself
Share Your ExperiencesWith other women with multi-role participation in the contemporary society.
Sharing experiences through hobbies, sport activities, playing tennis, playing golf, jogging...
Motivation
Open some space to creativity.
We are in 2008 and every woman deserves to be much beyond the Cinderela complex.
Dream Big.You are never too old to set another goalor to dream a new dream.
If you educate a manYou raise a man.If you educate a woman,You raise a family.
Slow down.Fast food, fast traffic, fast life are out of fashion. Do it slowly, do it well.
Final Tips
Simplify.
Take sometime to review your life and get rid of obligations you no longer need.
Happiness at all times.
Balance is a moving target.
In our PROFESSIONAL lives today, we are all trying to observe and create better ways of working to respect NATURE.
Taking this RESPONSABILITY is also a great way of seeing our work from a wider point of view – we're all human beings!
As a Civil Engineer, I always tried to work with environmental harmony. Here are some examples of responsible actions:
Collaborating for a better world
ECO BUILDING
GARDEN IRRIGATION
CLEANING DRAIN SINKSEWERCISTERNTANK
LESS PRESSURE/ LESS WATER
ONLY PEE---
MORE PRESSURE/MORE WATER
ROOF WITH RAIN CATCHMENT
We must look for ideas that use natural resources
with great results and economy.
DESALINIZATION

INSIDE A PHOTOVOLTAIC CELL
WINDOWS AND PROJECTSTAKING MOST OF SUNLIGHT
Intelligence Saves Energy!
AIR CONDITIONING FROM FLOOR UP TO HUMAN HIGH
COLD AIR IS HEAVIER THAN HOT

We must use our talents toproject and use energyin our daily liveswith economy and sustainability.

Many of us are already recycling. We also need to beconcious consumers. Do I really need to buy this?

Therefore:
Work-life balance is an ongoing challenge
Life is an oportunity, benefit from it.Life is a beauty, admire it.Life is a dream, realize it.Life is a challenge, meet it.
