Dear Future Salon Professional,Thank you for your interest in Tennessee School of Beauty. My guess is that you’re still searching for that meaningful, well-compensating career that fits your personality and that you actually enjoy.

Congratulations because you’ve taken that first step. No matter where you are personally or professionally, TSB has a path that fits your creative and professional goals. If you’ll trust me and allow TSB the opportunity to help guide you along the way as you enter into the salon profession, you’ll never regret the day you decided to contact us.

TSB graduates are always in high demand. We’re extremely proud of our outstanding placement record and the fact that we’ve helped more than 1000 of our graduates become salon owners. Now that we’ve partnered with Redken and their more than 175,000 Redken salons world-wide, our graduates are in even greater demand, both locally and nationally.

TSB has been the unquestioned leader in cosmetology education since 1930. How? By focusing strictly on education. We don’t own salons, we don’t own products, we don’t have to deal with franchise requirements…we simply focus on education. And just as importantly, we are constantly striving to improve. In 2012, TSB became the first beauty school in the nation to offer online testing. Also in 2012, TSB became one of the first beauty schools in the nation to have an iPhone/Android app. Since 2008, TSB has been the only school in the state of Tennessee offering Medical Esthetics education. Because of our advances in education, as of January 2013, all of the other area beauty schools have TSB graduates teaching at their schools.

After reading this packet, please feel free to contact me personally if you have any questions, need additional information, or are ready to register and begin your training to become a successful salon professional. I look forward to helping you with your future career and having you experience first hand why Modern Salon Magazine recently named Tennessee School of Beauty one of the top 3 cosmetology schools in the entire United States!

Sincerely,

Adam Brown President

Q. How long has the school been open?A. TSB has been in business since 1930. Twelve other area beauty schools have opened and closed just within the last 15 years. Q. What school did the instructors graduate from? A. All of TSB’s instructors graduated from TSB. Every other beauty school in the area has at least one TSB graduate TEACHING their students.* Q. Do you get to meet personally with the owner of the school?A. At TSB, you (and your family) will have the opportunity to sit down one-on-one with the owners of the school and they will be glad to answer any questions you might have. We feel that having an owner out of state is too impersonal and does not allow for problems to be solved immediately. It’s imperative you get the chance to discuss with the owners any questions or concerns you might have as this is your future and they want to be sure they can back up everything you’re being told. Because the owners are hands-on and at the school full-time, you can be assured you’ll be given the personal attention you need whenever the need arises. Q. How much is tuition?A. TSB is able to keep our tuition at a reasonable rate because we do not pay franchise fees or fees to support product advertisements. We are only in the beauty school business. We believe you will find TSB to offer the best education at the most affordable price. For full pricing information, see the tuition section. Q. What’s the student-teacher ratio? A. At TSB, we strive to keep the student-teacher ratio at 8-1 or better the entire time that you are in class. If we have larger classes, we are able to have more teachers in a class as we employ more teachers than any other area school. Q. What are the school’s job placement rates and owner involvement?A. TSB is proud of our 100% placement rate and was recently named by Modern Salon Magazine in the top 3 of all cosmetology schools in the nation in the area of job placement (that’s the top 3 out of

more than 2000 schools). The owners are happy to sit down with you and discuss various places of employment and job opportunities to help you find the perfect match. Q. What product lines do you use in your classes?A. At TSB, we use only the finest professional products both in our classes and in the student salon. As a Redken Premiere School, we use the entire line of Redken products in our cosmetology program. In our esthetics program, we use Dermalogica skin care, Glo-Minerals make-up, and Sanitas (which can only be ordered only through a physician – our medical director). In our nail technology program, we exclusively use OPI professional products. We believe you will find that these product lines are also the ones used by the majority of top salons world-wide. In addition, all of the product companies mentioned above offer tremendous advanced educational programs for our students and graduates.

Q. How many TSB graduates have gone on to open their own salon?A. More than 1,000 TSB graduates have gone on to open their own salon. In fact, most of the salons in East Tennessee are owned by TSB graduates. No other school in the area has graduates that own a local salon.* Q. What is the school’s State Board passing rate?A. TSB has a 100% passing rate at the state board. Last year TSB had 137 graduates take the state board exam and 137 passed. Q. How does your school handle transfer hours?A. TSB will gladly accept all transfer hours accepted by the Tennessee State Board of Cosmetology.

Q. What does my $99 technology fee cover?A. Your technology fee covers your testing. With online testing, you are able to take tests on your schedule. Tests may be taken/ retaken anywhere you have an internet connection.

Ask your salon professional from what school they graduated.

TAKE THE TSB CHALLENGE – WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO CHOOSE THE BEAUTY SCHOOL THAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU

BELINDA owner of Salon and Spa Visage, TSB class of 1982.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST DECIDE TO FOLLOW YOUR PASSION? Depending on where you are, passions come and go, they feed your inner passion…passion evolves. Learning is my true passion, so I follow where it may lead.

BEST ACCOMPLISHMENT? Getting married, having children, running a business, going back to college…it’s all an accomplishment, and I would do it all again!

BEST PART OF WORKING YOUR PASSION? I get the opportunity to be with various personalities. From the employees to the clients, everyday becomes a fabulous experience and I never wish the hours in a day to be over.

NAME A DEFINING LIFE MOMENT. When I was in high school I nearly lost my life in a car accident. It made me realize how precious life really is. Because of that, I never take one day for granted, and my daily goal is to get the most out of each and every day.

BEST ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WANTING TO OPEN A SALON? Be open and be a good listener for wisdom is all around us...but to get you must give.

WHEN DID YOUR PASSION HIT YOU? I have always loved doing hair. I practiced on my dolls and my family and friends. When I was younger, I got my hair done at a very impressive salon. I loved the atmosphere and it was then that I realized, “Hey, I can do what I love and make a career out of it.” I asked my stylist that day, “How do I get started?” She recommended that I call TSB (of course). That same salon is where I got my start.

WHAT (WORK) DID YOU DO BEFORE WORKING YOUR PASSION? I attended college, was a waitress, a secretary, and a receptionist.

BEST THING ABOUT TSB? TSB gave me so much confidence through the educational program that I actually felt at ease when I took my state board. State Board Instructors could actually distinguish a TSB student with our near perfect work. (Felt good)

3 THINGS THAT YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT. God, being grateful for everything that life has to offer, and giving back.

DURING YOUR CAREER, WHAT IS SOMETHING SPECIAL THAT YOU REWARDED YOURSELF WITH? The rewards for my success have been endless.

HAIR

The day I hit the clinic floor, I FELT LIKE A “SUPERSTAR!”

COSMETOLOGY

YOU DECIDE. Compare a 4-year degree to a cosmetology license. Most cosmetology grads enjoy flexible schedules, a relaxed and fashionable dress code, unlimited earning potential, a chance to express creativity, and a recession-proof career!

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCEDO YOU OFFER FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE?Yes, because TSB is nationally accredited, students accepted for admission are eligible for financial aid through programs established by the federal government under the Aid to Education Act. Some of these programs are listed below.

FEDERAL STUDENT AID (PELL GRANT) Grants provide money to help students further their education and skills after high school. For many students , these grants provide a foundation of financial aid, to which aid from other federal sources may be added. Unlike loans, grants do not have to be repaid. To apply for the grant, please visit www.studentloans.gov, create a personal pin number, and then go to FAFSA. You may also apply here at TSB. If asked, our school code is 009567. This application is FREE….please do not apply at any sites that require a payment to process your FAFSA. Currently, the maximum Pell Grant award is $5645. If you have questions, please call us and we will be happy to assist you.

FEDERAL STUDENT LOANSTennessee School of Beauty cosmetology and esthetics students may also apply for a Federal Student Loan (aka Direct Loan). This loan program is a loan that does not have to be paid back until 6 months after the student leaves school. The maximum loan for a student considered independent for financial aid purposes is currently $9500 and $5500 for a dependent student. To apply, please go to www.studentloans.gov and complete the Entrance Loan Counseling and then sign the Electronic Master Promissory Note (E-MPN). Please print these out and bring them to the school with you. As always, if you have any questions, please call us and we will be happy to assist you as this process can sometimes be a little overwhelming.

PRIVATE STUDENT LOANSDue to our long history and outstanding success record, TSB is one of only a handful of cosmetology schools nationwide that has been approved by Sallie Mae to be part of their private loan program. This loan is available for all of our courses (Cosmetology, Nails, Esthetics, and Instructor Training). There are many similarities between the federal loan and the private loan, however, one of the main advantages of the private loan is that students may borrow their entire cost of training, plus up to 60% more than their cost of tuition in order to help with living expenses while they are in school. Visit them online at www.salliemae.com/smartoption.

REHABILITATION SERVICE This aid service may be available to applicants who have, or have had, a physical or emotional disability. For those who are eligible, it is possible that your full tuition could be paid, regardless of family finances. Where family financial ability justifies, all training costs, including a monthly maintenance grant, may be authorized by the agency.

VETERANS’ BENEFITS Tennessee School of Beauty has met the standards set forth by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission and the Veterans’ Administration, and is now an eligible institution for Veterans’ benefits. Eligible students should contact the VA office.

TSB’s 100% MONEY-BACK GUARANTEE I guarantee that you will make more money than the cost of your tuition in less time than it took you to complete your training, or TSB will refund 100% of your tuition. Please see admissions office for more details.

BROOKEWHEN DID YOU FIRST DECIDE TO FOLLOW YOUR PASSION? I always knew I wanted to go to cosmetology school, but I also wanted my 4 year degree. So, I did that first and then I went to TSB. I became interested in their esthetics program, soI took it as well.

BEST PART OF WORKING YOUR PASSION? The endless opportunities. That doors keep opening for me. I’m doing so many diverse things with my TSB degree.

NAME A DEFINING LIFE MOMENT. When I was hired at The Breazeale Clinic.

BEST ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WANTING TO BE AN ESTHETICIAN? Don’t ever give up. Get face-time with as many people who work in the industry as possible.

WHEN DID YOUR PASSION HIT YOU? In middle school, I was always the one experimenting on my friends’ hair. A few of them lost eyebrows or ended up with burnt scalps, but I always knew I wanted to do this!

BEST TSB MOMENT? TSB had a speaker who was a TSB grad and a famous make-up/stylist to the stars. It was incredible to hear how he had succeeded. He talked to our class about always following our dreams. It was inspirational.

WHAT (WORK) DID YOU DO BEFORE WORKING YOUR PASSION? I was a nanny at a day care.

BEST THING ABOUT TSB? The diversity of the students. It was like a family or a sorority. I met so many fun, cool people.

3 THINGS THAT YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT. Family, medical side of esthetics, transforming someone’s look and seeing how it makes them feel good inside and outside!

DON’T EVER GIVE UP. I persevered. I always wanted to work in a physician’s office. It’s very competitive, but I’m in and I’m learning so much!

This is just a small sample of the intensive amount of training you will receive during your time at TSB.

WHAT IS THE AVERAGE INCOME OF AN ESTHETICS GRADUATE? The average income is $37,154 for a full-service salon and $40,126 for a specialized salon and this does not even include tips.

WHAT ARE THE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS? Applicant must have attained a high school diploma or General Education Development (GED) Certificate and be at least 16 years of age.

HOW LONG DOES THE PROGRAM LAST? The program can be completed in as little as 20 weeks. Classes are offered Tuesday through Saturday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. All students must complete 750 hours of training.

DO YOU HAVE NIGHT SCHOOL? Based on demand, we try to offer an evening esthetics course one time per year (beginning on the last Tuesday in September). The schedule for the first 8 weeks

is Tuesday - Thursday from 5:30 pm - 10:30 pm and Saturday mornings from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm. After 8 weeks the Saturday schedule changes to 8:30 am - 4:00 pm. You can graduate in approximately 36 weeks. The tuition for the evening program is the same as for the daytime program. Please see the next page for details on pricing.

Currently, the maximum Pell Grant award for the esthetics program is $4230. If you have questions, please call us and we will be happy to assist you.

LOANS There are two types of loans available to those TSB esthetics students who qualify. One type of loan is the federal loan (aka Direct Loan). This is a low interest rate loan that does not have to be paid back until 6 months after the student leaves school. To apply, go to www.studentloans.gov, complete the Entrance Loan Counseling , complete the Electronic Master Promissory Note (E-MPN), print those out and bring them to the school. The other type of loan is a private student loan through the Sallie Mae Corporation. Although this loan is income and credit-based (co-signers are often needed), one of the main advantages of the private loan is that students may borrow the entire cost of their training, plus up to 60% more than their cost of tuition in order to help them with living expenses while they are in school. You may visit them online at www.salliemae.com/smartoption. As always, please call us and we will be glad to assist you in any way as this process is often a little overwhelming.

WHEN DO CLASSES START? New esthetics classes begin three times per year (January, May, and September). For specific starting dates, please refer to the cosmetology section. The esthetics program’s starting dates are listed there. We limit class size to only 18 people and classes usually fill at least 30 days prior to starting date, so get busy and register soon.

THIS NEW ONLINE TESTING IS GREAT! Some people work late at night during the week, and having the test open all weekend creates an opportunity for them, and all of us for that matter, to take the test on our own time. Also, we get to look at our incorrect answers at the end of our exam which is good for helping us learn the correct answers so we can better improve ourselves.
