You might say Pastor William Hutflies is musically inclined... He can play you a tune on the piano, pipe organ, French horn, B-flat horn, guitar, baritone ukulele, and even the harmonica. His musical and pastoral gifts came in particularly handy while serving in a small rural congregation with two organists, who both went into labor the evening of the Christmas Eve Service! But, no worries. He played the guitar for the children to sing Silent Night, the organ for the hymns, and took care of the liturgy and the sermon!

Growing up he lived in Jackson Center, Ohio, and spent a lot of time on the neighbor’s farm, which was just down the road. An industrious and ambitious teen, he also worked in a local hardware store and the chicken hatchery to save enough money to buy a bicycle. As a child he was very active in the Boy Scouts, the Explorer Program, and he loved camping. He was very active in his church: Junior Mission Band, Luther League and playing the pipe organ and piano for Sunday School, worship and choir. He was a junior in high school when his pastor asked him if he would be interested in going to the seminary, which led him to Capital University in 1956. The Korean War had just ended and there was a dire need for pastors. God’s Call was answered. At Capital University he majored in sciences and biology, and it was there that he fell in love with science. At seminary, which was across the street from Capital, was where he fell in love with theology.

These days he enjoys listening to all kinds of music (except Hard Rock) and reading. His reading favorites include Early American History, Archeology, Astronomy and Medicine, which was conducive to the time he spent as a Hospital Medical Technologist and Hospital Laboratory Supervisor. Pastor William met his wife, Ginny, at a May Day Dance and they “just clicked,” and have been “clicking” for the past 57 years! Ginny, wise and caring, has had the greatest impact on his life. She is a wonderful mother and has always been a great support and encourager for their family of two daughters and two sons. When asked what advice he would give a young person, his answer was: “Do what you can enjoy doing so that you can whistle on your way to work.” Pastor William enjoyed doing volunteer work in the community and the schools, and served for 55 years as a Parish Pastor. There are still a few things on their itinerary including more visits out west to spend time with their children and grandchildren. Another adventure would be a visit to Greece because of its history, and to be able to walk the same path as the Apostle Paul. Pastor William has touched so many lives in his and Ginny’s travels. We pray that all of life’s journeys are enjoyed to the fullest! May God continue to bless this couple in their walk with the Lord.
