The ArrangerBob Mathews has served as the orchestra teacher at East High School and Carey

Junior High School in Cheyenne, WY for over 35 years. The program has continually grown under his guidance, and his ensembles have t ital. In 2001, The Strolling Strings were selected to represent the state of Wyoming at the MENC All-Northwest Convention in Spokane, WA.

Bob enjoys writing original compositions and arrangements for his students, including A Celtic Christmas, Fanfare for a Hero, Small Overture, and Sinfonia, all of which are published by the Neil A. Kjos Music Company. In 2012, he was the winner of the Texas Orchestra Directors Association (TODA) composition contest.

Bob loves all kinds of music, but has a special passion for old-time fiddle music. As a fiddler, he has won the Wyoming All-State Old-Time Championship five times and “Fanciest Fiddling” prize at the National Old-Time Contest twice, in addition to serving as adjudicator at numerous local, state, and regional contests. He plays fiddle in his family band, “Fiddles on the Range” (a quartet with son Bobby, daughter Lori, and wife Debbie), and plays in the country-western band “Country Club” with his children as well. The band is popular at private functions around the area and plays for the Cheyenne Frontier Days Pancake Breakfasts.

In his free time, Bob enjoys flying airplanes, operating ham radio, and spending time with his family.

The ArrangementSinfonia is a dramatic and harmonically daring piece, and the opening should set a mood of excitement and

theatricality. Students really enjoy the musical tension of the chromatic passages (for example, mm. 3-4); be sure to stress these important moments in order to build anticipation for the inevitable release that follows. In m. 13, another tension-building device is introduced: crescendos and decrescendos. This rising and falling dynamic gesture is the main event of this passage (through m. 26). Have students explore a wide dynamic range here, beginning each phrase very quietly, building quickly to a climax, then receding back to a whisper again, like the movement of ocean waves. The gesture will have the most powerful effect if the contrast between soft and loud is really maximized: it won’t be nearly as exciting if students stick to a safe, medium dynamic throughout the passage, so encourage them to really explore the extremes while always keeping a round, consistent, and controlled tone. Also work to make the crescendos and decrescendos as smooth and fluid as possible. In m. 27 (and m. 60 & 78), an extended crescendo in accompanied by gradual, contrasting chromatic motion, with 1st violins getting higher as the cellos and basses get lower. These “fan” figures are the moments of greatest tension in the piece—really milk them for the best effect!

Learning Bank: Georg Philipp Telemann (1681–1767)The music of Georg Philipp Telemann, a leading German composer in the

first half of the 18th century, marked a transition between the baroque style of J.S. Bach and the early classical style of Haydn and Mozart. Telemann was a largely self-taught musician who began composing and performing at an early age. He entered the University of Leipzig as a student of law, but a roommate’s discovery of his compositions launched his musical career, and by the age of 21 he was the musical director in Leipzig. He served as Kapellmeister (“music director”) in a series of appointments in Sorau, Eisenbach, and Frankfurt until 1721, when he settled in Hamburg as the town music director.

Telemann was an inspiration to musicians throughout German because his compositions focused not on technical difficulty but on accessibility to all musicians and music lovers. He composed operas, passions, cantatas, oratorios, songs, and instrumental music, and his popularity was fostered by the widespread publication of his music. His career was characterized by innovative compositional styles and, unlike his predecessors, a creativity unfettered by the appointments he held.
