Gun crime in the states: What do you think?

Gun crime– can we stop it? You probably heard about the recent, tragic shooting in Newton but it really makes me so mad! So many chil-dren lost their lives that day, so many parents lost their most precious possessions and let’s not forget the heroic teacher who lost her life, trying to save her students. BUT WHY? Why did all these people lose their lives…. GUNS! THAT’S WHY! Due to the recent shooting in Newtown, Connecticut , some statistics have been posted online: The US has the highest gun ownership rate in the world - there are 89 guns for every 100 Americans, compared to 6 in England and Wales. There were 12,664 murders in the US. Of those, 8,583 were caused by firearms. The figures show that California had the highest number of gun murders last year - 1,790, which is 68% of all murders, that year and equivalent to 3.25 per 100,000 people in the state. The problem that people are forgetting is that the gun used in this awful case, wasn’t just used for sport or protection, this was an assault rifle that the military use. Why should this be allowed? Don't you think their should be tighter reins on gun selling? I think that not all guns should be banned but definitely these assault rifles and guns that are unnecessary, have no place in OUR society. Have we leant nothing form previous wars?

The USA have suggested to arm more people in case this should happen again, in-cluding teachers and there’s another sugges-tion: armed police should be posted outside schools. Personally, I think that the police idea is wrong because that is a waste of resources and who will be dealing with crime that’s actu-ally going on whilst the police wait for it to happen again! Are we not encouraging a vio-lent society: violence breeds violence...doesn't it? Please write in to Impact (box in foyer) and tell us what you think. By Andrew

Here’s a shocking image of the students and teachers going for cover as the shooting took place.

BBC SHOWS Jimmy Saville spoof on chil-dren's programme

More complaints against the BBC for Jimmy Saville spoof shown on the Tweenies programme, this was a repeat of the an episode made in 2001. One of the characters from the Tweenies Max was dressed in the trade mark Saville tracksuit wearing a blonde wig and using Jimmy Saville’s catchphrases. The Tweenies, which was a co-production between Tell-Tale Produc-tions and the BBC was cancelled in 2003 but episodes have been re-peated regularly since then. The programme was shown before the 9:00 on Sunday 20th. The BBC have apologized for their actions and promised to never do it again. But should that be the end of it? Police say DJ and presenter Saville sexually abused hundreds of peo-ple during 60 years in entertainment. Considering the BBC are already under fire about the Jimmy Savile investigation, this is obviously not going to help matters any further, the BBC know exactly what they are putting on T.V. What are you’re opinions? Let us know! By Eloise

Beware...watch out for: • Hackers - they can get all sorts of personal info and

do anything to your account! • Getting addicted - you can spend hours on the com-

puter and it’s bad for you. • Cyber bullying - as soon as you let them be friends

with you they can post anything on your wall! • On Twitter, once you have posted something any-

one can see it! Tips on how to stay safe: on Facebook set up your pri-vacy settings so that only your friends can see your pro-file and don't be friends with people that you don't know and never never agree to meet up. They may not be who they say they are. On Twitter, if someone follows you and you don't want them following you block them! Also, be careful what you tweet! By Zoe

Internet: do you know what you’re getting to

know?

The internet can be a fun place to go to. You can find something cool or something to share, but there are dark sides to this new online environment. The internet may seem fun but if you click on the wrong links or talk to the wrong people, you may find out that the internet can be stressful and overall disturbing. On the internet, there’s nothing stopping most people for posting whatever they want on any website or any program. You could get a virus or simply see or experience something that could mentally scar you . It is this that can make the internet a dangerous place. The internet is clearly a great place if used right! As I explained earlier, it’s a good way of finding information or having fun and to meet new people from all over the world. You have just got to use it in a safe way to enjoy it and stay safe. To stay safe, when surfing look at the links that your clicking to see if there's anything suspicious or negative. Do this when other people like friends are sending links in case its some sort of joke. Install a web safety program like Norton or Avast to be safe from viruses. I would recommend Avast. Know how to block/delete people in case its someone who wants to know your personal information. If you use a website regularly, have a look through it and get to know it well. Good luck and if in doubt ask parents/older brothers and sisters. By Sam

Recently all Year 7 forms have chosen their charities to sup port and raise money for, with bake sales, book sales,

sweet sales and much more. Year 7 have worked really hard and have each raised a tremendous amount for their charity. The next page is listed with some year 7 forms,

which charities they have chosen and how they have raised money for their charity...

Page 8: Impact 5

7CS—Mrs Sharma- 7CS supported ‘Children In Need’ and raised an amount of £89 with ‘Guess How Many Shells In The Jar’ a Cake and Sweet Stall, and a Bookstall!! 7CK—Mr Kwan- 7CK are planning to support ‘Cancer Research’ by selling cakes and milkshakes. 7TC—Mrs Clifton- 7TC supported ‘Cancer Research’ with bake sales and a non-uniform day and they managed to raise £115!! 7DJS—Mrs Smith & Mr Jones- 7DJS are going to support ’Starlight’ with a book store, a brownie stall, a cake stall, a DVD stall, and a sweets stall. We will look forward to seeing how much all the other forms will raise with their contributions to support their charity. Last year we saw a spectacular performance from the current 8DF form. After doing lots of fundraising for Great Ormond Street Hospital, which made their Sweet Stall and Bag Pack-ing they raised a school record amount of £486! This year they are supporting a charity called ‘First Step’ who support disabled children and their parents while they are under five. They have lots of plans for charity events and they aim to beat last year’s total! You better watch this space!!

War Horse is a spectacular book that will knock you out of your seat.. or should I say saddle! This engrossing book, written by Michael Mor-purgo, is narrated by a horse called Joey. Albert, a boy on a farm is his master and they build a fabulous relation-ship. This story is charming and a real tear jerker. It is story not just about their amazing relationship but the strength of that relationship; the extent they will go to for each other! Suddenly, they are separated when he is sold to the army by Albert’s fa-ther during the First World War. Now Joey must fight through the war and take on the challenges he faces alone. Can he lose any more friendships? Will he survive through the war when so many have died? Will he ever see Albert again? Buy the book or grab a copy form the Hall Mead library to find out! In January, the creative writing group went to watch the theatre produc-tion in London with Mrs Sharma and Mr Jones! If you love the book then get out and watch the show. It’s amazing! By Daisy

The Game Cube! This amazing and sadly outdated console deserves a small page of its own on its past glory! It was basi-cally Nintendo's number 1 console until the Wii came out in 2006. This memorable and loveable console mustn't be forgotten and so I'm going to review a couple of memorable games that you may have played! If you haven't, I suggest you buy them, seeing as the Wii can also play GameCube games and you can plug in a GC controller to the side of the Wii.

Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker Legend of Zelda: Wind Walker was one of GameCube's most famous games in my opinion. You play as Link or whoever you call your character, travelling the seas to earn the triforce of courage and defeat Gannondorf, with LOADS of side quests along the way. The king of red lions

helps you along the way and gives you a special conductors stick. What starts out from saving your sister from pirates turns out to be a journey to save Hyrule from Gannondorf!

Luigi’s mansion Luigi’s mansion was fairly memorable, one of the first games where Luigi was the star of the game! He wins a new mansion and finds out it's haunted. He must find his brother who he finds out is hidden in the mansion and get rid of any ghost that blocks his path. A new 3DS sequel will be re-leased soon too!

Sonic adventure 2 Sonic adventure 2 battle is a famous game in the sonic se-ries. The characters were easy to control and you could choose to play on the good side or the bad side and a final level. This was also the first game where Shadow the hedge-hog appears, and Rouge the bat. What the hell is a

Sonic?! .Dr Eggman wants to charge a super laser in a space station called the ark using chaos emeralds so he can hold the world hostage. He used the help from Rouge and Shadow who was said to be the ultimate life form. So clearly Sonic, Knuckles and Tails have to stop them at all costs! By Sam

SKYFALL

Overall this film is amazing and delivers a very unpredictable ending that sets up a sequel perfectly and ends classically. It is mostly faultless although the plot is a bit underused for such a good premise.

Plot; 9 /10

The plot is different to any other Bond film and is based around a cyber criminal. He starts terrorising MI6 by blowing up offices by hacking in and releasing secrets.

Action; 10 /10

The action in this film is outstanding, Well planned, written, directed, performed and ed-ited. The best I have seen in a bond film for years! The action is spread out quite well and generates some tense moments that lead up to the sequences unlike the previous instal-ments. The film opens up with a massive ac-tion sequence that finishes after fifteen min-utes. And after you’re ‘blown’ away by that, the story starts to unfold. Although there is a bit of a wait before the next sequence...it’s well worth the wait!. By An-drew

Overall; This film seems not to know what genre it wants to adhere to and to be honest, fails at the combo of action and thriller! It does however manage to, mildly, entertain an au-dience but doesn’t cover any new ground. It is a good watch but has obvious flaws.

The plot is taken out of the ninth book in the Jack Reacher series called “One Shot” . In a book, this plot definitely works but didn’t seem to gel well on screen. I think this was probably down to the way it was adapted by the director.

There is not a lot of action in this film and when it does occur it seems lacking in style and excitement. Nonetheless, the action is watchable. The main problem, I think, with viewers being disappointed with the action in this film is that they have really high ex-pectations after seeing the Mission Impossi-ble franchise. In comparison, this doesn’t match up. Saying that however, there is a good car chase later on….so keep your eyes peeled for that!

Storyline: 6/10 There are three different game modes in single-player: Survival, Creative and Hardcore. Survival is where you wake up on a ran-dom island and you have to survive by making shelter and finding food. In creative you can fly and you have unlimited supplies so you just do what you want. (Perfect for building awesome struc-tures) Hardcore is survival but on the hardest difficulty and no respawning (coming back to life).

Game play: 9/10 The game play is awesome!. For survival and hardcore your goal is to survive. First thing you must do is chop down a tree with your bare hands! Then you can make a crafting bench and you can craft lots of tools and other stuff to help you. You can build a house and mine for minerals in caves, but watch out! In the dark-ness, monsters attack you! But most monsters burn in sunlight (like a vampire)

Extra Bits: 9/10 There are so many extras I might run out of space! You can go online on multiplayer to play with your friends, you can change the appearance of your character, you can download mods to change the game play and add more stuff into the game, you can download texture packs to change the appearance of the game, you can download and play other worlds other people have made and you can even build portals to other dimensions such as the Nether (Hell) the Ather (Heaven) and The End (A scary place where you fight a dragon!)

Overall rating:

Storyline: 8.5

9.5 Although there is no storyline, you can do campaigns. In these you choose which country you would like to represent, play many Olympic sports and try to top the medals table. It’s really fun and almost like being there.

Gameplay: 9.7 The game play is great. The graphics are amazing and very realistic. This gives the gamer a realistic and enjoyable experience. You feel like you are actually there, competing in the Olympics. You can break Olympic and world records and play with your friends online.

Along with the campaign mode, there is also a party mode. This is great for playing with friends and family. It is fun, very different to the main game and create a variety for gam-ing.

Extra bits: 8.7

These are a list of some games that we are looking forward to in the future!

This zombie-survival game from Naughty Dog (the creators of Uncharted) is out on 7th May 2013 and so far looks amazing!

The new addition to the Crysis series looks the best yet and we can’t wait!

The new Slender man game by Blue Isle studios looks really scary! Improved graphics, different levels and a storyline makes this the best Slender man game yet!

The third Bioshock game is taking the world by storm and this time is set not under the water, but in the air!

Watch out for these….some are suppose to be brilliant!

It seems like a very insignificant type of syndrome, who cares if you are obsessed with 1D or Justin Bieber? But what if you can effect people in a more harmful way, making teenagers more vulnerable to get affected by the actions of our favourite celebrity idols. It’s fine if you stalk them on twitter or watch the Twilight saga on repeat all day, but what if it turned into some-thing much more serious? Recently young teenagers have been self harming themselves due to pop icon Justin Bieber smoking weed, this only proves how celebrities impact teenagers lives. But Justin is not Jesus Christ– no matter how hard our culture promotes him as such. In the past a crush on a pop star or movie star etc would be meditated through a teenage magazine run by adults (with an agony aunt on the back page to remind you to keep your fanta-sies in check) Teenagers are can be quite vulnerable, but then again it’s not just us teenagers that can be absorbed with the media, its also some adults as well that like to aspire to their role models. It can be a man in his twenties wanting to be-come in the shape of his favourite athlete. Lots of people want to be as attractive and successful as their favourite celebrities, therefore this can lead to lower confidence levels, cases of anorexia and other problems that we still face as a community. Self harming is a very serious issue and shouldn’t be taken lightly, if you are worried about a friend or you have any question’s about the issue please don’t hesitate to ask your parents or a teacher at school. You can also speak to the cyber mentors every Friday lunch-time. No one should suffer in silence.
