Working Memory
http://theelearningcoach.com/learning/20-facts-about-working-memory/18
What is the Working Memory? It can be compared to a video as your memory records what you hear and captures what you are seeing, but the comparison ends there..The working memory is the part of the brain you use to store information for a brief time to enable you carry out a task related to the information shortly after receiving it.There are 2 parts to the working memory Audio Hearing what is said
Visual Spatial Seeing what is being done
Explain that with a video you can replay as often as you want but with your working memory it only stays there for 10 15 seconds on average unless repeated.19
The prefrontal cortex plays a major role in the short-term and working memory. It serves as a temporary store for short-term memory, this is where visual spatial information is processed. The Broca's area of the brain holds the audio parts of the information required to use the working memory.
Both of these areas need to be working together to get the best out of your short term/working memory
Talk about damage through impact on frontal lobe and explain how dyslexia, etc. can interfere with phonics.20
Listen to this and try to visualize what is happening?
Run MP3 sound bite for 40 seconds then stop, ask questions about what is going on and finally play same time frames of video.21
Lets look at a picture
Explain 20 seconds to look22
How many animals did you see? What was the arrow pointing at?Which letter was not underlined ?How many balls were there? What colour was the ducks hat?2The letter yr4BlueHow many did you score out of 5?
Do activity with bus and 7 stops.23
Tips for improving memory
Visualisation techniques such as mnemonics can help as long as they can link an image to the text!BigElephantsCantAlwaysUse SmallExits
